Build Overview

This Umbral Chains build feels a lot smoother than most other Warlock builds. It doesn’t rely too much on conditional damage and you get to play from range, which makes it pretty comfortable. If you’re sick of clunky stuff like Apocalypse and want something smooth that still clears all the high tier content and Uber Mephisto, this is a really good option.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Insane Damage
  • Low Gear Requirement
  • Smooth
  • Stationary when casting

Build Variants

This version is built to feel faster and more convenient when clearing lower tier mobs and doing general farming.

It uses the Banished Lord's Talisman, which makes the build feel smoother and more reliable. The talisman helps with consistency, so you don’t have to worry as much about specific timings or setups while blasting through content.

Because of this change, the build becomes noticeably quicker and easier to play, but it does lose some damage compared to the full endgame version. If you’re mostly doing Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, or just want to farm comfortably without needing maximum power, this version works really well.

If you care more about raw damage for pushing high Torment, stick with the regular endgame setup instead.

Apocalypse is purely for Survivor Damage Apocalypse for a juicy 100% increase in damage. We can reliably proc this by using Chain Whips Umbral Chains + Annihilation Apocalypse

Endless Barrage Bombardment is to instantly proc Fathomless + Annihilation Apocalypse, if you want to automate this process at the cost of uptime / damage you can use Meat Shields Command Fallen instead

I don't use Heavy Harpoon Umbral Chains because it's not the most fun thing for general content and definitely slows down your clear speed, however it works very good against bosses

Key Uniques

Here are the important uniques for this build and where to farm them:

Scourge of Duriel (Warlock Flail)
This is one of the core uniques. It increases the damage of Umbral Chains and adds an extra variant to it.
Best farm: @Duriel (as the name suggests). You can also target it using @Duriel boss trophies in the Horadric Cube.

Footfalls of the Waning World (Boots)
This is probably your highest priority unique to farm. It gives you extra Evade charges or reduces Evade cooldown.
Best farm: Complete Escalation Nightmare Dungeons. You can also target farm it by running bosses and then selecting the Star option that drops loot from Escalation dungeons.

The Hemat Stone (Amulet)
This is another strong unique for the build.
Best farm: @Bartuc, Lord of Chaos (from Infernal Horde). You can also target it using @Bartuc boss trophies in the Horadric Cube. It can randomly drop from Helltides and Nightmare Dungeons too, but Bartuc is by far the best way.

Godslayer Crown (Helm)
This is a great item if you want more crowd control. It pulls enemies in and groups them up nicely, which helps a lot with Umbral Chains.
Best farm: @Andariel is currently the strongest target for it. It can also drop from @Duriel.

Speed Farm Version

Banished Lord's Talisman is another strong unique amulet you can consider for this build.

It gives a big boost to Overpower damage and makes your Core Skills hit significantly harder after you spend a certain amount of resource. It’s especially good if you’re already scaling overpower in this version of the build.

Unfortunately, it no longer has a dedicated target farm. It was moved into the general unique pool, so it can drop from pretty much anywhere in Torment difficulties — Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, Lair Bosses, etc.

Mythics

Two really good Mythic uniques you can use in this build are Heir of Perdition and Tyrael's Might.

Both can be found from any of the Greater Key bosses. The easiest and most consistent way right now is farming @Belial, but they can also drop from Tormented @Duriel and @Andariel. Mythics can technically drop from most high-end content, but these bosses give you the best chances.

Runes

I’m running two rune setups here.

The first one is Cir + Ceh. This summons a Spirit Wolf that attacks enemies, and it also applies freeze and Vulnerable at a really good rate. Since Warlock doesn’t have many easy ways to apply Vulnerable (outside of the Sentinels), this rune pair is a really nice addition. The wolves also act as good bait, which helps a lot.

For the second rune setup, I’m using Cem + Que. This one lets you summon Earthen Bulwark, which gives you a big barrier. It’s a solid defensive option that helps with survivability.

These two pairs work really well together for both offense and defense without feeling too clunky.

Early game you can use Mot as alternative to Que.

Points are spent on Dark Prison because we are using the 'Prid' rune to gain it for free, it gives an insane defensive layer.

Paragon Board

Mercenary

We’re using Raheir as our main mercenary. This gives us access to Bastion, which provides a bit more defense and also reduces the damage we take while inside it. Going with Raheir also gives us Aegis, which grants 15% resistance to all elements. That’s a really nice bonus.

For our support mercenary, we’re running Varyana with Bloodthirst. This gives us an extra attack speed buff on top of everything else.

How it Plays

  • Metamorphosis — Pop this at the start of fights (or as soon as it’s up). This is your biggest damage multiplier, so you want it active as much as possible.
  • Summon Vollach (or your mount skill) — Use this early to get mounted. It gives you strong buffs and makes you much more mobile.
  • Nether Step — Use this for mobility and to generate Shadow Form stacks. It’s also good for dodging dangerous attacks.
  • Dark Prison — Keep this up for damage reduction. It’s mostly a “set it and forget it” defensive skill.
  • Molten Bomb — Use this when you need resources. It helps you keep spamming your main skills without running dry.
  • Umbral Chains — This is your main damage skill. Spam it constantly. The goal is to keep linking enemies and exploding the chains as often as possible.
  • Sigil of Subversion / Sigil of Summons — Drop this on packs for the buff and extra damage.
  • Refresh Summon Vollach every 6–8 seconds or so to keep your overpower stacks and buffs going.

How it Works

This build revolves around Umbral Chains as your main damage skill. With the right upgrade, it links enemies together and explodes for big damage when the chains stretch too far or expire. The goal is to constantly spam it so you’re creating and detonating chains non-stop.

Because we turn Rampage into an Abyss skill, we get access to strong Abyss synergies — especially Hex. This lets us apply max Hex stacks very easily, which increases the damage enemies take from us.

We also get free Overpower pretty often, which lets us scale overpower damage really hard. Most of the other skills exist to either generate resources, keep buffs up, or activate nodes on the Paragon board.

Metamorphosis is your big damage window. It gives a massive multiplier and lasts long enough to do serious work. We also get near-infinite resource generation from one of the glyphs, and solid Fortify from another skill, which helps with both defense and legendary aspect synergies.

Overall, the build is very straightforward: keep your buffs active, stay in Metamorphosis, and just spam Umbral Chains while everything explodes around you.
