Build Overview

This is the Dread Claws "Blue Cannon" Warlock leveling build. I already played it when I visited Blizzard a few months ago, and it was by far the strongest build you could run at low levels without needing any items. It uses both Dread Claws and Rampage for damage.

The build focuses heavily on the skill Rampage, with its special upgrade Abyssal Titan Rampage that you unlock at level 20. Level 20 comes really fast — the very first event in the game already pushes you to level 7 — so the build comes online extremely quickly and carries you smoothly through the early game.

Build Variants

For the very early levels (1–19), before you unlock the Abyssal Titan Rampage upgrade, we run a slightly different version of the build.

We use the Unfathomable Fragment soul shard as our class mechanic instead of the Blasphemous Fragment that we switch to later.

Single-target damage comes from Hellion Sting, while Dread Claws handles AoE. It’s a super basic setup — just three active skills plus the class mechanic skill. The last slot is Nether Step for mobility.

That’s it. Simple, smooth, and surprisingly strong for the first 19 levels with zero gear required.

Level 1–19 Skill Rotation

At this stage we only have a few skills available.

  1. Use Hellion Sting as your main single target skill. It has a 50% chance to eviscerate elites.
  2. Use Dread Claws for large packs of enemies. While Hellion Sting is stronger overall, it performs much better against elites.
  3. Nether Step is your basic mobility tool and gives you a movement speed boost.
  4. Profane Sentinel is a nice extra damage skill for bosses and can consume your Dominance.

Gear & Aspects

There isn’t too much I want to say about gear for this leveling build.

I’ve added some useful aspects to the planner. Aspect of Might and Aspect of Disobedience are just generic solid defensive aspects. Aspect of Slaughter is a good movement speed option — especially nice for campaign and companion runs — so I recommend putting it on your amulet.

I generally don’t like swapping my amulet and rings often, so if you find an aspect you want to keep for a while, those are the best slots for it.

For the level 20 version of the build, I added Aspect of Inevitable Fate. It boosts damage from over time effects, which works great because Rampage eviscerates enemies and applies bleeding.

At level 40, I added Vehement Brawler's Aspect, which increases your damage when you cast your ultimate. Since we use Metamorphosis quite often, this is a nice extra boost.

There are definitely better aspects you can find later on, but these are safe and effective. I just went with some generic ones because the Warlock is already pretty overpowered while leveling anyway.

Mercenaries

For mercenaries, we always use Subo. He’s ideal for leveling too — he gives you movement speed and critical strike damage.

Our secondary mercenary is Varyana. Her Bloodthirst skill gives us some extra attack speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Blue Cannon Warlock leveling build is built entirely around spamming Rampage as your main source of damage. This is only good once you hit level 20 and unlock the Abyssal Titan Rampage upgrade, it becomes an absolute monster for clearing packs and bosses with almost no gear.

Before level 20 you have to use Hellion Sting to kill Elites.

The build works by stacking three key things:

  • ShadowForm stacks (for big damage and movement speed boosts)
  • Dominance (the resource that lets you keep spamming Rampage)
  • Trails of Shadows (generated by Sigil of Subversion)

Your basic skill changes at level 20 to Command Fallen (with the Fallen Army Command Fallen upgrade). This is purely for resource generation, it’s not for damage. When you run low on Dominance, you fall back to Dread Claws for AoE until you can go back to spamming Abyssal Titan Rampage.

Nether Step is your mobility and emergency teleport. Use it freely to reposition or to gain even more Shadow Form stacks.

Level Progression

  • Levels 1–19: Very simple. You use Hellion Sting as both resource gen and single-target damage, Dread Claws for AoE, and the Unfathomable Fragment soul shard as your class mechanic.
  • Levels 20–39: The build really takes off. You switch to Command Fallen and add Sigil of Subversion. Rampage with Abyssal Titan Rampage becomes your main nuke.
  • Level 40+: You unlock the ultimate Metamorphosis with the Terror Demon Metamorphosis upgrade. Pop it on cooldown, it adds extra ranks to all your Abyss skills and lets you use them while transformed, making your damage even smoother.

The whole thing is extremely forgiving and strong right from the start. You don’t need any specific items or gear, just follow the rotation. It scales beautifully all the way through the campaign and into early endgame.
