Diablo 4 Build

Andariel Barrage

presentationRogue
Season 5
Updated on Sep 3, 2024

Build Overview

Although S4 featured a decently strong Andariel Barrage, it mainly excelled at AoE clearing. With the introduction of The Umbracrux this has changed. The build is now a true powerhouse. Capable of machine-gunning out an exorbitant amount of Poison Novas.

Special thanks to Virgorie, PocketRyu and Slott from the Sanctuary Discord for helping me optimize the build to perfection.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Strongest Season 5 Rogue Build
  • Incredible Strong AoE Clear
  • Almost Immortal
  • Requires Andariel's Visage

Mythic Unique Priority

  • Andariel's Visage > Tyrael's Might > Starless Skies.

If you do not have high Lucky Hit Chance (180%+ with Alchemical Advantage) use Retribution instead of Bursting Venoms.

  • How it Plays

    1. Cast Smoke Grenade
    2. Cast Shadow Step
    3. Cast Poison Imbuement
    4. Cast Shadow Clone/Death Trap
    5. Cast Poison Trap
    6. Spam Barrage
    7. Remember to refresh Poison Imbuement
    8. Cast your Ultimate whenever it's up
    9. Cast Shadow Step for Unstoppable and mobility.

Against Bosses, equip an Umbracrux, replacing Retribution Aspect or Branching Volleys if you are not using Retribution.

    How it Works

In previous seasons, all of Barrage's pierces and ricochets were completely wasted on Bosses, which led to builds that felt great while getting to the boss then fell short. Umbracrux allows us to spawn a Totem that absorbs all pierces and ricochets, making our Andariel's Visage proc generation skyrocket against Bosses.

The build has also gotten a lot stronger with the inclusion of Second Wind which essentially doubles our total life pool in the form of Barrier, as we can machine gun Barrages with no consideration for our Energy. Make sure to get to Rank 7 Second Wind through a combination of Skill Points and Tempering Affix(s) on Pants/Chest.

The Ultimate Cooldown Reduction Tempering Affix used on your amulet and ring comes from Necromancers. If you don't want to level a Necromancer you can use Trap Cooldown Reduction and utilize Death Trap instead. To use Shadow Clone you need 2x Ultimate Cooldown Reduction Tempering Affixes.

    Skill Choices and Explanations

    Basic Skills

We do not use a Basic Skill on this build.

    Core Skills

We use Barrage on this build as it's decisively the strongest skill in terms of Lucky Hit Chance as long as you land all arrows. The introduction of Umbracrux allows us to spawn a Totem to absorb all the arrows we generate in single target scenarios.

    Agility Skills

Shadow Step is our main Unstoppable skill. We also use it to proc Fluidity and Close Quarter Combat.

    Subterfuge Skills

Smoke Grenade allows us to safely CC mobs to get close, provides a hefty damage bonus, and spawns an Umbracrux Totem for us.

Poison Trap is taken because it provides [x]15% damage on top of enabling the Deadly Ambush Legendary Node.

    Imbuement Skills

We use Poison Imbuement to apply more Lucky Hit effects and to proc the Eldritch Bounty Legendary Node.

    Ultimate Skills

We use Death Trap or Shadow Clone to enable the No Witness Legendary Node, reset our cooldowns through Preparation and also give us DR%.

    Masterworking Priority

Although this guide shows the most optimal gear setup, it's not easy to acquire and generally compromises must be made. For that reason, it's important to understand how the different affixes rank in terms of Masterworking priority.

    Breakpoint Affixes

These affixes and their exact Masterworking values are used to reach specific breakpoints.

    • Armor
    • All Resistances
    • Attack Speed
    • X Imbuement Lasts for X Casts

    Maximum Priority Affixes

These should be 3x Masterworking at all costs as they are incredibly powerful affixes.

    • Ranks to Dark Shroud
    • Ranks to X Passive

    High Priority Affixes

These should ideally be 3x Masterworking but are not an absolute necessity.

    • Damage per Dark Shroud Stack
    • Lucky Hit Chance (Gloves)

    Medium Priority Affixes

These should ideally be 2x Masterworking, although exceptions exist when other affixes of the same priority level or higher co-exist on the item.

    • Close Quarter Combat: Damage to Crowd Controlled Enemies
    • Precision: Critical Damage
    • Victimize: Vulnerable Damage

    Low Priority Affixes

These are mostly interchangeable 1x Masterworking affixes.

    • Maximum Life
    • Dexterity

    Bursting Venoms Explained

    How Does it Work?

Bursting Venoms generates up to 3 poison puddles in the ground that can proc lucky hit chance effects. Because of the math involved in translating DoT Skill/Aspect LHC, into tick LHC, at 100% Skill/Aspect LHC we reach 100% tick LHC and can no longer benefit from LHC.

For Bursting Venoms this value is roughly 100% / 33% = 203.03% Lucky Hit Chance.

The equation that roughly models this mathematical process is 1 - (1 - 0.33 * (1 + LHC)) ^ (1/3). This equation grows faster the closer you get to 203.03% LHC. For that reason Bursting Venoms is only worth using from around 180%+ LHC onwards.

    Dark Shroud Explained

    How it Works

Dark Shroud is used passively through the Umbrous Aspect and therefore does not need to be placed on our Skill Bar. Dark Shroud is an insanely powerful defensive skill in Season 4 because of its parabolic scaling. This means that it gets stronger the more we invest into it.

Level 1 Dark Shroud provides 40% DR at 5 stacks.
    Level 5 Dark Shroud provides 48% DR at 5 stacks. 1 - (1-48%)/(1-40%) = 13.33% effective DR increase.
    Level 15 Dark Shroud provides 68% DR at 5 stacks. 1 - (1-68%)/(1-48%) = 39.5% effective DR increase.
    Level 19 Dark Shroud provides 76% DR at 5 stacks. 1 - (1-76%)/(1-68%) = 25% effective DR increase.

As you can see, the more we increase our Dark Shroud level the stronger each level gets. Going from 1 to 5 is equivalent to adding a 13.33% DR affix while going from 15 to 19 is equivalent to adding a 25% DR affix.

    Attack Speed Breakpoints

To explain what Attack Speed Breakpoints are we first need to understand how the game works.

    • The server operates at a fixed 60 FPS, irrespective of your ingame FPS.
    • Because casts can only take a discrete amount of frames to go off this leads to the existence of breakpoints.
    • A cast can't take between X.01 and X.99 frames. For example, Attack Speed values that should lead to a cast speed between 20.01 to 20.1 will all lead to 21 frames.
    • Because the server runs at 60 FPS we can find our real cast speed by calculating 60/Frames. For example, if your Heartseeker cast takes 15 frames, that translates to 60/15 = 4 attacks per second.

This Sheet lets you calculate your Attack Speed Breakpoint for various skills.

This build wants to reach the 11 frame breakpoint with a Bow.

We achieve this by having Rank 6 Alchemical Advantage and 57.2% Attack Speed between Andariel's Visage and Fist of Fates.

If you can't hit 11 frames because you do not have R6 Alchemical Advantage, move Conceited Aspect to your Amulet.

Something to keep in mind is that two Masterworking crits on an affix are worth the same as Greater Affix.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why Are You Using Shadow Clone?

Because Shadow Clone provides 5 seconds of Unstoppable.

Why Am I Running Out Of Energy?

Most likely you did not put 3 points into Innervation and/or did not equip The Umbracrux against Bosses.

    How Do You Generate Barrier?

Through the Second Wind passive. Getting this to Rank 7 for the maximum value possible is very important. Any extra Skill Points you have after reaching Rank 7 go in Alchemist's Fortune.

How Do I Temper Ultimate CDR?

You have to make a Necromancer and get the Efficiency Legendary Tempering Manual.

Do I Have To Use Shadow Clone?

No, if you don't want to level a Necromancer just use Death Trap with Trap CDR.

Why No Branching Volleys On Ammy?

    Because it's mathematically worse.

    Branching Volleys on a normal slot makes your 30 arrows become 36. That's a 36/30 - 1 = [x]20% increase.
    Branching Volleys on an amulet makes your 36 become 39. That's a 39/36 - 1 = [x]8.33% increase.
Conceited on a normal slot gives you [x]25% damage at basically 100% uptime.
    Conceited on an amulet makes your 25% become 37.5%. That's a 1.375/1.25 - 1 = [x]10% increase.

As you can see, Conceited is always better than Branching Volleys. In fact, with Bursting Venoms equipped, Branching Volleys is less of a dps increase as it does not increase the amount of Andariel procs originating from Bursting Venoms. This makes the real dps increase closer to 7-7.5%.

R9 Alchemical Advantage + Conceited on Ammy vs R6 Alchemical Advantage + High Velocity on Ammy?

Although they are very close, I prefer to recommend Rank 6 Alchemical Advantage. If we introduce Ranks of Frigid Finesse into the equation, the opportunity cost to Masterworking Alchemical Advantage on your amulet, we find that the R6 setup does more damage in basically every scenario except a deep Pit Push.

In the case of a deep Pit Push, they are about equal.

Why Do We Use The Deadly Ambush Legendary Node?

Because it's bugged and is also working on hits, not just crits.
