Overview

Borderlands 4 just received another Weekly Minor Update for Valentine's Day, and it's the second week now where I've been impressed with the overall direction of the targeted player engagement for the game.

What changed?

The lovebomb themed reset kicks off with the expected weekly big-encore change, this time with a not-so love triangle of the three main story bosses of Borderlands 4's regions of Kairos.

Idolator Sol - Fadefields

Queen Callis - Carcadia Burn

Vile Lictor - Terminus Range

During this week, players can fight any of these 3 bosses with their big encore counterpart- something slightly different from the previous weeks where we'd typically only get one boss to fight.

This is an extremely refreshing model to see, and one Gearbox had previously hinted was coming. The last time we saw it was with the triple threat encore of all vault bosses, which players seemingly received well.

Now admittedly, Big Encore bosses don't do much for me. They're cool, sure. But what I personally want as an endgame player is a layered system with unique reasons for completion. More drops isn't that, and endgame certainly is not... Farming gear. I really hope that isn't what Gearbox thinks it is, either. That'd be an impressive level of mis-communication.

But three bosses isn't the only change the game saw this week, as we also got a surprising change to the modifer system in UVH levels, the endgame difficulty system of Borderlands 4.

UVH Modifier Changes

Modifiers have been a topic of conversation a lot since the inception of them all the way back in Borderlands 1, believe it or not. But they've returned in 4 with a more ARPG-Like twist, being featured on all enemies regardless of endgame status or not.

Now whether or not you fall on the like/dislike side of the modifiers debate is one thing, but I think we can all agree that one way to get players interested in your weekly resets is to bring with them thematic sets of modifiers in a somewhat periodic manner.

This week, Gearbox have increased the chance for all enemies in UVH to spawn with either the Wealthy or Bougie modifiers, which significantly increase the amount of Cash, and Eridium respectively. A nice change of pace from what we've previously had... Which is... Nothing.

On the offensive side, all enemies with a damage related trait now have an increased chance to spawn with the Chain Master modifiers, which connects their allies with a damage dealing beam when crossed through.

There's an argument to be made about whether or not this is all too little too late for Gearbox, but if we're going to criticize the game for all of the shortcomings, the only way we improve upon them and move forward is to also recognize when a win is achieved, and this for me... Is a step forward.

Limited Time Community Challenge

Lastly, a new community challenge has been started for a new Valentine's themed Vault Hunter Skin titled: You're So Vein

To reach this goal, the team at Gearbox are asking players to collectively revive a grand total of 500,000 players... Wowie

Now admittedly, I do not feel much incentive to engage or help complete these challenges, as the reward often does not feel worth it. I'm happy with how my Vault Hunter looks, so a simple skin change rarely does much to pull me back in as a player.

However in saying this, I again do feel like it's a nice step in the right direction, and ultimately as much as I think it can be an excuse... It IS better than nothing when it comes to marketing the game to the active community.

Summary

All in all, I'm really curious to see whether or not Gearbox can keep up this momentum, or if we'll be doomposting about the state of the game again with weeks to come. Later this month, we'll see the arrival of Pearlescent rarity, and a new Bounty Pack, so let's just hope they stick the landing.
