Overview

When it comes to farming Legendaries and gear in Borderlands 4, there is ultimately lots of RNG involved. However, there are ways to maximize odds of getting what you desire.

At a baseline, your best bet is to focus on methods which award the largest quantity of gear, opening the door to the widest variety of possible options.

This guide will focus on RageGaming's recommended pre-endgame methods, helping to provide you a handful of ways to farm that precious loot!

If you're just diving in for the first time, be sure to check out RageGaming's Ultimate Starter Guide!

Dedicated Drops

While Legendaries can be found almost anywhere simply by chance, bosses do have their own loot tables which provide improved odds for specific items.

Once you uncover where a specific Legendary drops, you can repeatedly farm that boss to your heart's content. It'll still take time, but it definitely increases your chances!

Rift Challenges

While traversing the map you may come across an icon which leads you towards a Rift Challenge. These dome-like events provide the opportunity to take on a random boss in exchange for excellent loot.

The only real drawback is their rather unpredictable nature, meaning if you see one, you'll definitely want to take advantage of it.

Make sure you stay within the bubble during the entire fight, and pay attention, because you won't get another shot (at this individual challenge) if you die.

Boss Respawning

An efficient way to farm loot is simply by respawning previously defeated bosses. You can do this by accessing Moxxi's Big Encore Machine, located right before the boss room.

Each attempt costs cash, but will allow you to jump right into the action and potentially target farm certain Legendary items.

Bosses drop a large amount of loot upon death, and also end with a grapple/rift/portal that spawns you back to the Encore Machine; perfect for efficient grinding!

Vaults

Vaults are unlocked through exploration and contain more powerful boss fights, but even greater rewards. They're also repeatable in the same way via Moxxi's Big Encore Machine.

Vault bosses have more intricate drop pools and also spawn two red chests (that are full of gear) at the end of the fight. However, they are considerably stronger, so you may want to gear up beforehand.

Vending Machines

Vending Machines can be found throughout the map, selling various items, along with an "item of the day". This includes both gun and medical machines.

Each Vending Machine comes with its own independent stock, making them all unique.

What's even better is they restock and refresh every 30 minutes, allowing you to frequently check them again for the chance at some tasty loot.

Once you've unlocked more of them, you can easily fast travel between to quickly scout what's available; great during downtime (such as waiting for a friend during co-op).

Fishing

Across the map there are spots along the water where you can grapple ("fish") in search of items. You'll primarily just find worthless cans, but occasionally you may see guns, explodables, or actual fish.

It's even possible to find a Legendary if you're lucky!

Make sure you pay attention, because if you do pull out something of interest, you'll still need to grapple it out of the air before it falls back into the water and permanently disappears.

Be Patient! (Or Don't)

Unlocking sweet loot is one of the best parts about the game, and while the two following methods provide just that, you may want to hold off until later.

Certain rewards scale to your level, meaning the most optimal plan would be waiting until level 50. But hey, no judgment if you decide to go for it sooner!

"Vend of the Line" Side Quest

Found in Carcadia city within the desert region of the map, this side quest will let you choose between a selection of Legendaries on completion.

Golden Keys

Primarily obtained via SHiFT Codes, these also unlock chests full of great level-scaled loot.

In case you're unfamiliar with the system, here's a quick explanation of SHiFT Accounts.
