Borderlands 4 is still going strong, with tons of Vault Hunters looking to complete their treasure haul with the ever elusive 'Phosphene' weapons. A unique, extremely rare vanity given to Legendaries when they drop.
However as eluded to, these items are RARE are many people are struggling to get their hands on them, due to the reduction in dedicated drop rates brought in with Borderlands 4. Luckily, there's an easy way to get your hands on these items, and in this guide we'll show you how!
What are Phosphenes?
Phosphene items are aesthetically modified versions of the base item drop, which give the item in question a unique, rainbow-esque appearance.
Phosphene items cannot be traded between friends
One thing important to point out, is that dropping a Phosphene item will appear to 'remove' the effect. This is a common misconception amongst players. What actually happens, is when picking up a phosphene item, the player will be rewarded with the skin for 'Phosphene' in their customization tab for that weapon.
Now, any copies of that weapon from that point onwards can be equipped with this unique skin, acting as a trophy for players who have found the elusive version of their drop.
Some more notes about Phosphene items include:
ONLY Legendary rarity items can drop in Phosphene
There is NO stat difference between a normal Legendary, and Phosphene
When dropped for the first time, the item(s) in question will emit an effervescent glow from the base of their loot beam
Phosphene items do not have a unique drop sound. Keep your eyes peeled!
Guide
Where to start? Eridium.
Before we get going, you'll need to get your hands on that sweet purple mineral known as Eridium. While it isn't as easy to get your hands on it like it perhaps would've been in Borderlands 3, we have an easy farming method for obtaining it this time around.
First, you'll need to have beaten the game and unlocked Vile Bounties. Next, be sure to set your difficulty to the highest Ultimate Vault Hunter rank possible, as this will net you more Eridium from these bounties. All you have to do now, is save/quit your game at a town such as the Outbounders HQ, and keep checking the bounty board for Vile Bounties.
You'll need quite a bit of Eridium for this farm, so be sure to bring around 5,000 for good measure!
With our pockets filled with Eridium, lets head to the weekly Moxxi's Big Encore. These activities move on a weekly basis, and will select a boss each week to power up. For the price of 100 Eridium, you can amp up not only the health of the boss in question, but also their dedicated drop rates
In most runs, you'll find yourself either getting the dedicated drop, or even in some cases getting two at once! In fact, during our testing we ended up with multiple runs where we found 3 drops at once!
Because of how getting a shiny works, it's safe to assume that by maximizing your Legendary drops, you'll also be seeing these shinies more frequent too! This makes Moxxi's Big Encore Machine by far the fastest way each week to add a new Phosphene to your arsenal.
Notes
Some important things to remember about this method
Moxxi's Big Encore Machine will move each week
You will need to finish the game and complete the introductory missions to access this activity
Each run will be harder, and cost you 100 Eridium if you want access to those increased drop rates
