Overview

Some of the most common mistakes to avoid in TFT happen before combat even starts. Forcing a comp, spending gold at the wrong time, or leaving useful items on your bench can make your team weaker than it needs to be.

In this guide, we’ll cover eight mistakes that can hurt your games in Set 18 and explain how to fix them.

If you’re looking for a comp to play, check out our TFT Set 18 team comps for recommended builds, items and positioning.

Forcing a Comp Too Early

Knowing a few comps well gives you a useful starting point, but choosing one before seeing your shops, items and augments can leave you struggling.

An early copy of a carry gives you an option. It does not mean you should ignore every other direction, especially if your components suit a different team or you keep finding upgrades elsewhere.

Try learning a small selection of comps with different item needs. This gives you somewhere to go when your favourite board does not fit the game.

❌ Mistake: Committing to the same comp regardless of your units, items and augments.

✅ Fix: Use what you find to choose between a few familiar comps.

Leveling Out of Habit

Leveling to 4 on 2-1 can help you build a win streak, but doing it automatically can spend gold without changing the result of your fights.

Before buying XP, decide which unit you will add. Does it activate a useful trait, provide needed frontline, or add enough damage to help you compete.

Scout as well. If your opener is still unlikely to win after leveling, saving towards your interest thresholds may be more useful. A one-cost reroll plan can also be a reason to stay at a lower level.

Upgraded units, useful completed items and a combat augment can all help you build an early win streak. If you’re aiming to win all five player combats in Stage 2, scout the lobby and check whether your board is strong enough to support that plan.

❌ Mistake: Following a leveling timing without checking your board or game plan.

✅ Fix: Know what the extra level will give you before paying for it.

Holding Onto Gold for Too Long

Saving becomes a problem when your board needs upgrades and you're losing too much health to reach your intended plan.

If your main tank and carry are still one-star and your fights are getting worse, sitting on 50 gold may leave you with very little room to recover.

If you have important pairs on your bench, roll for useful upgrades, then rebuild your economy once your board can compete. This can help you with maintaining winstreaks and stopping you from bleeding too much HP.

The same applies when pushing levels. Reaching Level 9 with no money left does little for a struggling team. Sometimes you need to improve your Level 8 board first.

Our Set 18 Fast 9 guide explains when you can keep saving and when you should spend.

❌ Mistake: Protecting your gold while your board falls further behind.

✅ Fix: Spend before the damage becomes unmanageable, then reassess after finding upgrades.

Buying Wisps Without Checking Their Conditions

Some Wisps only pay out if your fights go a certain way. Check whether your board is likely to earn the reward before buying.

  • Major Gambit gives gold if you win the next player combat.
  • Component Bounty gives a random component if you win the next player combat.
  • Golden Road grants gold when you win during the next three player combats.
  • Take One With Ya grants XP if you lose and kill at least one enemy.

A win based reward is a gamble when your board is struggling. A loss based reward may be a poor fit if you are about to roll down and become stronger.

Scout first, and consider the Wisp alongside your next upgrade. With loss based rewards, avoid weakening your team so much that a close defeat becomes a heavy loss.

In the late game, keep enough gold for a useful combat Wisp alongside your upgrades. That extra combat strength can help you win a close fight and survive another round.

❌ Mistake: Buying a Wisp for its reward without considering how to trigger it.

✅ Fix: Choose rewards that fit your board strength and upcoming plan.

Waiting Too Long for Perfect Items

Your carry’s recommended build gives you a target, but waiting several rounds for one missing component can leave useful strength sitting on your bench.

Look at what you can make now and who can use it. A suitable temporary holder can put those items to work while you find your final carry.

Check your frontline too. If your tank dies before your carry can deal enough damage, completing a tank item may help more than another damage item.

Waiting can be reasonable when your board is comfortable and another item drop is close. The mistake is doing it without considering the health or streak you could lose.

If you're struggling with choosing the perfect Artifact for your unit, check our Set 18 Artifact guide.

❌ Mistake: Leaving useful components unused while waiting for a perfect build.

✅ Fix: Make items that improve your current team and use appropriate holders.

Choosing Augments Without a Plan

Before choosing an augment, think about how you will get value from it during this game.

An XP augment usually suits a plan that involves pushing levels. If you intend to stay at a lower level to reroll, consider whether another option supports that plan better.

Look at your previous choices too. Once you have enough resources, a combat augment can help turn them into a stronger team.

Emblem augments also need a plan: a useful trait breakpoint, a suitable holder, and items that work with the resulting board. Our Set 18 Emblem guide can help you with those options.

❌ Mistake: Choosing an augment without knowing how your team will use it.

✅ Fix: Pick an option that supports your current position or a realistic next step.

Not Scouting Before Important Decisions

Before committing to a reroll comp or spending heavily, check whether other players are collecting the same champions. Look at their benches, items and augments as well as their boards.

One opponent holding your carry does not automatically mean you should pivot. Consider your own copies, how committed they look, and whether you have a workable alternative.

Keep scouting after your comp comes together. Different opponents may require you to move your carry, adjust your frontline or spread out.

A quick check before augment choices, large roll downs and late-game fights is a useful habit to build.

❌ Mistake: Making major decisions without checking the other boards.

✅ Fix: Use scouting to assess competition, compare strength and adjust positioning.

Chasing Traits Instead of Board Strength

More active traits do not automatically make a better team. Adding a weak unit for a small bonus can cost you a stronger frontline or a useful damage dealer.

Before swapping units, compare what you gain with what you lose. An upgraded temporary tank may do more for your team than a one-star champion that unlocks a trait.

Strong trait breakpoints are still worth building towards. Just avoid assuming that every extra trait is an upgrade, especially when it means removing an item holder or your best frontline unit.

❌ Mistake: Adding weak units simply to activate more traits.

✅ Fix: Judge the whole board, including upgrades, items and the value of the trait bonus.

Avoiding these mistakes will help you make better use of your gold, items and units throughout the game. Stay flexible, keep scouting and adjust to what the game gives you to put yourself in a stronger position to climb.
