Using Tame Beast

Tame Beast can only be used on Rare Beast type monsters. After you equip the Tame Beast Skill Gem and place it on your skill bar, when you hover over any Rare monster, you will see its monster type below its health bar, along with the various modifiers that Beast has.

Using the Tame Beast Skill is a little unusual, but if you're familiar with how to capture Pokemon, it works in a similar way: after using Tame Beast on a monster, you will have a certain number of seconds in which to "capture" it, from 8 seconds at Level 1, to 11,8 seconds at Level 20 (this number increases with each Gem Level).

For this reason, it's recommended when you know you're able to defeat the monster within this time frame. Don't miss out on this window because you will fail to capture the Beast if you slay it while it isn't affected by Wisps from the Tame Beast Skill

Method

  1. Find the Beast you want to capture
  2. Deal enough damage that you're able to finish it off within the Wisp duration
  3. Cast Tame Beast
  4. Slay the monster

The Tame Beast Gem will now instantly be converted into a Companion Gem with the name of the Beast that you captured, along with the modifiers it had, up to a maximum of 4 modifiers.

Companions can be activated by right-clicking the skill picture in your Skill Gem window, similar to how you activate any other permanent buffs

Companions Reserve a percentage of your total Spirit, and this amount varies depending on the modifiers that it had when captured. This can be a fairly steep cost, but can be reduced with Notables such as Easy Going and the small Passive points before and after, to cause them to Reserve 30% less Spirit

Undying Hate + Darkness Enthroned Can Also Lower Spirit Reservation From 0.3!

In order to capture a new Beast, you will need a new Tame Beast Gem, or you can Disenchant an existing Companion Gem with a vendor to get back a Tame Beast Gem of the same level

Companion Modifiers

Rare monster modifiers work similarly to item modifiers, in that certain modifiers are Prefixes and others are Suffixes, meaning that monsters can only have certain combinations of abilities and powers.

This section will describe several popular and powerful modifiers to look out for, as well as some secondary effects that are very useful. It's recommended you try to find a Beast with at least one Primary and one Secondary modifier that is useful to your build. If you are short on time, aim for at least one Primary modifier.

Primary Modifiers

These are the modifiers that should be your primary focus. Without one of these, it might be better to keep hunting for a better Beast with a better combination of modifiers

  • Haste Aura (not "Hasted") - grants Allies in Presence 20% increased Attack and Cast Speed and 10% increased Movement Speed
  • Elemental Aura - grants Allies in Presence 20% to all Elemental Resistances
  • Temporal Bubble - a bubble surrounds the monster, and any enemies that enter the bubble will have their Action Speed reduced
  • Invulnerability Aura - a cycling aura that grants Allies in Presence 5 seconds of Invulnerability every 10 seconds (note: these numbers need further confirmation, but this is the generally accepted time-frame)
  • Physical Damage Aura - grants Allies in Presence 20% increased Physical Damage
  • Energy Shield Aura - grants Allies in Presence 12% of Maximum Life as Extra Energy Shield

Secondary Modifiers

These are the modifiers that are strong, but aren't powerful enough on their own to warrant capturing a Beast

  • Elemental Trail - the monster leaves a Trail of Ice, Trail of Fire, or Trail of Lightning in its wake. This is particularly useful for builds that can make use of these ground effects, such as Twister Builds
  • All Damage Shocks/Ignites/Chills/Bleeds/Poisons - any attack made by the Companion will inflict the associated Ailment. Note: this doesn't cause YOU to inflict these on hit, just your Companion.
  • Heals Allies and Suppresses Foe Recovery - heals Allies in Presence for a small amount of Life per second, as well as reducing enemy Life Recovery
  • Hasted - different from "Haste Aura", this effect will cause the Companion to move and attack more quickly and is particularly useful to make sure your Companion stays close to you and within its presence
  • Periodically Unleashes Fire/Cold/Lightning - once every few seconds, the Companion will erupt in an explosion of a specific Elemental type. Each of these is useful for different reasons. Lightning assists with applying Shocks to enemies, Fire deals damage and leaves behind Burning Ground, Cold explosions creates orbs of cold that Chill enemies
  • Conjures Lightning Storms - useful for applying Shock to enemies

Tertiary Modifiers

These modifiers are nice-to-have, cherry-on-the-top type modifiers that are strong, useful, but not worth capturing a beast for without a Primary and Secondary modifier

  • Detonates Nearby Enemy Corpses
  • Elemental Resistance
  • Proximal Tangibility
  • Magma Barrier
