Build Overview

For players who have overtaken me since this guide started, I recommend swapping over to Lightning Spear and following this guide from Fubgun: https://mobalytics.gg/poe-2/builds/fubgun-lightning-spear-amazon

The build performs extremely well up even in Tier 15 Maps, but because of the pace of the game, and mechanics of this particular skill, Lightning Spear is a much more effective, all-rounder skill that performs brilliantly. Also, because of the size of the arena, this build struggles against Arbiter of Ash, and Lightning Spear doesn't face those same issues for that boss.

This is the build I am playing for PoE 2 Dawn of the Hunt 0.2.0. The build revolves around using Whirling Slash and Twister along with ground effects created from Frostbolt to deal additional damage

DISCLAIMER

This is a very early version of the build that I quickly whipped up. I will continue updating it as I go, but this is working brilliantly for now.

Playstyle

  1. Set up by casting Frostbolt to create chilled ground
  2. Use Whirling Slash THREE times to fully build up the Whirlwind
  3. While still standing in the Whirling Slash Whirlwind, use Barrage
  4. After using Barrage, use Twister to fire out a massive volley of Twisters

Rake

You can also use Rake once you get access to it. Early in the campaign, along with Stomping Ground, this skill feels really great to use. If you have a weapon with high Elemental Damage, don't use Brutality and instead you can use Martial Tempo instead (you'll need to remove it from your Whirling Slash. If you do use Rake, you can use Herald of Blood as well. Otherwise use the above suggested supports.

This is included in the Skills section just so you know the links, but you don't have to use it if Whirling Slash and Twister is doing enough damage

Companion

Our Companion is very important. We are looking for a beast that has Trail of Fire or Trail of Lightning. This will create ground effects that will be picked up by your Whirling Slash and Tornado. Just note that Tame Beast can only "Revive" Beast type monsters. Once you have the skill equipped, pay attention to the monster type beneath its health bar

Gearing

Make sure that you are upgrading your Spear regularly, and acquiring the highest base tier as possible to increase your damage (unless of course you have a lower base tier one with excellent modifiers)

Spear Upgrade Levels

Required Level

Act 1

1, 5, 10, 16

Act 2

21, 33

Act 3 onward

40, 45, etc

The modifiers you're looking for on your Spear are ones like %increased Physical Damage and also things like "Adds 8 to 10 Physical Damage". Early on, elemental modifiers such as "Adds 10 to 20 Fire Damage" are also great.

Sockets: if you have high Physical Damage on your spear, use Iron Rune, but early on, any of the Elemental Runes (Storm, Desert, Glacial Runes) are great too.

Also remember to salvage weapons with Quality to get Blacksmith's Whetstones that can improve your weapon's damage. Also salvage socketed gear regularly to get Artificer's Shards to socket your weapons

Vendors and Regex

This is the vendor Regex that I use to find useful items
"speed|o stre|pear|ed bl|to att|um li|ck sp|irit"

Copy and paste this into vendor search bars (ctrl+f) to find items you might want

Look out for Maximum Life, Resistances and very importantly Movement Speed on Boots, as well as potential weapon upgrades.

Vendors refresh part of their inventory every time you level up, so check back OFTEN.

IMPORTANT

  • YOUR WEAPON DETERMINES YOUR DAMAGE. DO NOT NEGLECT YOUR WEAPON. USE CURRENCY TO UPGRADE IT IF YOU CAN'T FIND A GOOD DROP OR ONE FROM THE VENDOR
  • UPGRADE YOUR FLASKS REGULARLY. YOU GET NEW FLASK TIERS AT 1, 4, 10, 16, 23, 30, 40, 50, 60
  • LEVEL UP YOUR GEMS

Ascendancy

First point: Predatory Instinct

Second Point: In for the Kill

Skill Tree

Just note that the below skill tree isn't 100% up to date, so some of the points will do different things than what is stated below, but the points I have allocated are in the correct position

Dance with Death

This keystone gives us 25% increased Skill Speed, so long as we dont have an offhand Shield equipped. Make sure to turn off auto-equip in options so you don't accidentally pick up a shield

Venom Quest

Normal: Ailment Threshold

Cruel: Attributes

Leveling Passive Points

  1. Primal Instinct and Stalk and Leap. Just note that you might want to take a couple of Attribute points near the start if you really need extra Intelligence and Strength, otherwise find it on gear
  2. Head down to Maiming Strike, and Catalysis this will cover a lot of your Attribute needs and give you damage
  3. Next, go for Dance with Death and unequip your Shield and also turn off Auto-Equip in Options
  4. Take Roll and Strike and Precise Point followed up by Acceleration
  5. Next, we head up to the Companion nodes to Inspiring Ally and Easy Going
  6. Beastial Skin and Escape Velocity and Proficiency
  7. Tandem Assault and Primal Sundering
  8. Falcon Technique

Mana Sustain and Frenzy Charge Generation

Mana Sustain

You might struggle to sustain mana and run out of Flask charges, but there are a few ways to solve this

  1. Mana Leech: can be found on Gloves, Rings and on your Weapon. A fairly small amount of Mana Leech will almost single-handedly solve this issue. However, there are more options
  2. Added Maximum Mana and Mana Regeneration both help - having a higher Mana pool means that any % increased Mana Regeneration Rate will also increase the amount Regenerated per second
  3. Font of Mana linked to Whirling Slash apparently can help
  4. Mana Gain on Kill is great for mapping and clear, but less effective on bosses
  5. Mana Flasks with % increased amount recovered, and 0.2 Flask Charges gained per second
  6. Reduced Mana Cost of Skills from sources such as Pariah's Embrace

Frenzy Charge Generation

There are a few ways to generate Frenzy Charges, which I will discuss here

  1. Freezing enemies by using Chilled Ground created from Frostbolt and using Twister to gain extra Cold Damage will allow you to Freeze enemies. With Combat Frenzy, this will grant you Frenzy Charges when you Freeze enemies. This has been the easiest way in my experience, but some people don't like using Frostbolt
  2. You could also try using Pin linked with your Twister or Whirling Slash to Pin enemies, which will grant you a Frenzy Charge when using Combat Frenzy. You can also link Pin with Wind Dancer to help, but this is less reliable
  3. Electrocute is an option, but this is more complex. You could use Call of the Brotherhood if you are using Lightning Ground from a Companion or Wake of Destruction to convert the Lightning Damage to Cold, allowing you to Freeze enemies and generate charges as if you were using Frost Bolt
  4. The Three Dragons is another option to create Freeze Buildup on enemies if you opt for Shocked Ground instead of Frostbolt Chilled Ground
  5. Bushwhack are also great with Combat Frenzy to Pin enemies to generate Frenzy Charges
  6. After going Crit, use Sniper's Mark to generate Frenzy Charges against Bosses. Can remove Combat Frenzy or Blood Hunt to fit it in

I still find the first method easier, but maybe one of the above listed methods will be easier for some folks, especially those who opt for Boots such as Wake of Destruction or Birth of Fury

Pinnacle Bossing Tips

This build excels with single target in small arenas where the Twisters are able to bounce around walls, hitting the boss repeatedly. However, in larger arenas, such as Arbiter of Ash, this makes it hard for the Twisters to hit more than once.

Another problem is generating Frenzy Charges against Pinnacle bosses, meaning you're spitting out far fewer Twisters with your Barrage.

Possible Solutions

  1. Add in Sniper's Mark instead of Blood Hunt to generate Frenzy Charges with Crits. This only works if you have a decent Critical Hit Chance. Link Profusion to this and using Serpent's Egg helps too. You could also remove Combat Frenzy instead of Blood Hunt, but you will miss out on generating Charges if you do Pin, Freeze or Electrocute the boss
  2. Frost Wall, possibly linked with Fortress can be used to create walls in the arena from which your Twisters can bounce. These will be destroyed after being hit so this isn't necessarily very reliable and I haven't tested it, but it could be the solution
  3. Play Lightning Spear instead like everyone else
