Overview

Overkill is a Keyword mechanic in Path of Exile 2.

Basic Mechanics

What is Overkill?

Overkill is the total amount of Damage in a Hit that exceeds the required amount of Damage necessary to kill a target. Damage in excess of the required amount is considered to be Overkill Damage.

Tip: check out our in-depth guide for how Damage is calculated in the full order of operations here.

For example, if a Hit of 5000 Damage would deal the exact required amount of Damage to kill a target, then the same Hit dealing 7000 Damage would have 2000 total Overkill Damage.

Note: Overkill Damage can only result from Hit Damage, and does not interact with Damage over time in any way.

Interactions

Trampletoe

One of the most notable uses of Overkill Damage is the Trampletoe Unique Boots that are able to provide an incredible boost to clearing potential by essentially dealing Overkill splash Damage. The portion of Damage dealt resulting from Overkill Damage is also very useful against bosses that have smaller Monsters in a close proximity to them.

Herald of Ash

Herald of Ash is a Persistent Buff Skill that causes a percentage of Overkill Damage to be inflicted as an Ignite on nearby targets if the Overkill Damage exceeds a threshold of the target's maximum Life.
