Overview

Freeze, also known as Frozen, is a Cold-aligned Non-Damaging Elemental Ailment in Path of Exile 2. You can find Freeze-related stats on Cold clusters, typically at the top of the passive skill tree.

Basic Mechanics

What is Freeze?

Freeze is a Non-Damaging Elemental Ailment that reduces the Action Speed of the target to 0, preventing them from performing actions such as moving or using Skills. Freeze is inflicted by a Hit of Cold Damage by default.

Unlike Electrocute or Stun, a target that is Frozen will not have their current action interrupted. Instead, any current action such as a casting animation of a Spell, will be temporarily paused for the Duration of the Freeze, and will resume when the Freeze expires or is removed.

Note: Freeze is entirely independent from Chill.

Chance to Freeze

Any Cold Damage in a Hit is able to inflict Freeze or cause Freeze Buildup. The chance to inflict Freeze is based on the total Cold Damage of a Hit relative to the target's Ailment Threshold. For the majority of monsters, their Ailment Threshold is equal to their maximum Life, with the exception of stronger monsters such as some Rares and all Unique bosses. Stronger monsters have their Ailment Threshold adjusted to allow players to inflict Ailments on them. A character will typically be able to Freeze weaker Monsters very quickly, but will require many more Hits to build towards a Freeze on stronger Monsters such as map bosses.

Note: Freeze has a higher minimum Ailment Threshold that must be met compared to Chill, making it harder to inflict.

Modifiers that grant 'increased Freeze Buildup', for example Inescapable Cold, do not apply a base chance to inflict Freeze. Instead they directly scale the build-up of Freeze based on the Cold Damage the target takes from the Hit relative to their Ailment Threshold.

As Freeze build-up is calculated post-mitigation, any modifiers that affect how much Damage a target takes, such as Shock or Exposure, can help to improve your chance to inflict Freeze by improving the Damage dealt by the Hit.

Note: if the Cold Damage in a Hit is insufficient and does not reach the minimum Ailment Threshold to inflict Freeze, it will instead add to Freeze Buildup.

Duration of Freeze

Freeze Duration is determined by whether it was inflicted by a Hit that dealt enough Cold Damage to the target's Ailment Threshold, or by Freeze Buildup on the target reaching or exceeding 100%.

  • In the case where a Freeze is inflicted by a Hit that deals enough Cold Damage to a target's Ailment Threshold, its Duration is determined by exactly how much Cold Damage is taken from the Hit after mitigation. This method of inflicting Freeze is most common against weaker Monster with lower Ailment Thresholds.
  • When a target is Frozen because Freeze Buildup on them reached or exceeded 100%, the Duration of the Freeze is 4 seconds by default.

The Duration of Freeze can be increased by modifiers such as '50% increased Freeze Duration on Enemies' on the Deep Freeze Support Gem.

Note: Freeze will be discarded if it does not meet a minimum Duration. Increasing the Duration of Freeze effectively lowers the minimum Ailment Threshold that needs to be met for the Ailment to be inflicted.

Shatter

When a Monster is killed while it's Frozen, it will Shatter, destroying the Corpse of the Monster in the process. Shattering a Monster will deny any On-Death mechanics tied to that Monster, such as the Spikes on Death ability used by Porcupine Goliaths.

Note: Unique Monsters cannot be Shattered.

Interactions

Herald of Ice

The Herald of Ice Skill will create an explosion upon Shattering a Monster, dealing Attack Damage in an Area with 100% of Physical Damage converted to Cold Damage.

Chaotic Freeze

Chaotic Freeze is a Support Gem that allows Chaos Damage Hits from any source to Contribute to Freeze Buildup as long as the target is currently taking non-Ailment Damage over time from the Supported Skill.

Frostbreath

The Unique Mace Frostbreath has the special modifier 'All Damage from Hits with this Weapon Contributes to Freeze Buildup'. Any Attack Hits using this weapon will modify the calculation for the chance to inflict Freeze to also include any non-Cold Damage.

The Three Dragons

The Three Dragons is a Unique Helmet that allows Lightning Damage dealt by Hits to inflict Freeze or Contribute to Freeze Buildup. However, Cold Damage dealt will no longer be able to Chill or Freeze, and Lightning Damage dealt will also be unable to Shock.
