What are Flasks?
Flasks are Items that can be used to activate their Flask Effect. Flasks have a system that consumes a set amount of Flask Charges on use to provide their Effect - when there's not enough Charges to use the Flask, it cannot be activated. For example a
Colossal Life Flask consumes 10 Charges upon use and has a maximum capacity of 75 Charges that can be stored.
In Path of Exile 2 there are two Flask slots by default, one for a Life Flask and one for a Mana Flask. Unlike in Path of Exile 1, Utility Flasks do not exist by name, but some Unique Life and Mana Flasks may provide Flask Effects that are somewhat similar in design.
Tip: Flasks cannot appear in Rare rarity.
Life Flasks
Life Flasks appear in the first slot, and recover an amount of Life over the full Duration of the Flask Effect upon use. By default, the recovery from a Life Flask will be removed upon reaching Full Unreserved Life.
Note:
Vaal Pact prevents the use of any Life Flask.
Mana Flasks
Mana Flasks appear in the second slot, and recover an amount of Mana over their full Duration upon use. By default, the recovery from a Mana Flask will be removed upon reaching Full Unreserved Mana.
Flask Charges
Flasks have a maximum capacity of Flask Charges that can be stored. Interacting with a Well in towns will refill all Flask Charges in addition to fully restoring a character's Life, Mana and Energy Shield.
During gameplay, killing Monsters will grant Flask Charges to restore any missing Charges that have been used. The amount of Flask Charges that are gained are based on Monster Power, which is a system that takes into account Monster Rarity and difficulty to provide an appropriate amount of Flask Charges comparatively with other Monsters, and for the effort required to kill the Monster.
You can also invest into modifiers that provide a passive generation of Flask Charges, such as the use of a
Fine Belt or
Alchemist's Boon, or by allocating Passive Skill Tree Notables, for example
Waters of Life or
Staunching. Passive Charge generation can also be rolled as a Suffix modifier on Magic Life and Mana Flasks.
Flask Recovery
The base Recovery from Flasks is displayed on the Flask Item. For example a
Lesser Mana Flask recovers 50 Mana over 2 seconds, or 25 Mana per second by default. The amount of Recovery a Flask provides can be modified by rolling specific Prefix modifiers on a Magic Flask, such as 'More Recovery if used while on Low Mana' on Mana Flasks. Additionally, Flask Quality resulting from Glassblower Bauble's will multiplicatively scale the base Recovery provided by a Life or Mana Flask.
This base Recovery amount is recovered over the full Duration of the Flask's Effect. By default when a resource reaches full, the Recovery Effect from a Flask is removed and any remaining Duration and Recovery is essentially wasted.
External modifiers can then scale this base Recovery amount in different ways. For example the
Hale Traveller Notable increases Life Recovery from Flasks by 20% - this modifier improves the total amount of Recovery per second, whilst the Recovery is still provided over the same Duration.
Oasis prevents the use of Charms, but provides a multiplicative 30% boost to Recovery from Flasks.
Flask Duration
The base Duration of a Flask's Effect is displayed on the Flask Item. This Duration can be altered with modifiers that roll on Flasks, for example the 'increased Recovery Rate' Prefix that makes a Flask's Recovery apply over a shorter Duration, essentially improving Recovery per second but shortening how long you're under the Recovery Effect for.
External Flask Duration modifiers such as
Savouring will then apply to the base Duration, maintaining the same total Recovery per second, but extending the lifetime of the Flask's Effect.
