HOW TO DEAL DAMAGE (IMPORTANT)
+1 to Level of all Minion Skills is your biggest early-game upgrade. Minion builds scale extremely hard with gem levels, so +1 gives a massive damage boost.
How to Get It Early
The most-sure way to get this is:
- Create a new character
- Progress to level 5 (takes ~5-10 minutes)
- Gamble items from the vendor (Finn)
- Look for +1 to Level of all Minion Skills on a Sceptre or Helmet
Low-level characters get cheaper and better odds when gambling.

Your first Level 1 Uncut Skill Gem that you get from Renly will be Contagion and then you must pick up the Skill Gem in Clearfell to cut Flame Wall.
Complete The Mud Burrow, use the Level 2 Skill Gem on Skeletal Sniper, and the Support Gem on Multishot I.
You'll get another guaranteed Level 2 Skill Gem in The Red Vale from the league mechanic. Cut Frost Bomb.
First Level 3 Skill Gem (The Rust King): Essence Drain
Second Level 3 Skill Gem (The Grim Tangle): Upgrade Skeletal Sniper
Third Level 3 Skill Gem (Lachlann): Pounce
Upgrading priority: Skeletal Sniper > Flame Wall > Frost Bomb
Make sure to do Freythorn and pick up Raging Spirits! You can drop Essence Drain at this point.

How it Plays
In early Act 1, use Contagion and Unearth to clear trash monsters. You'll drop Unearth by the time you reach level 6 and swap to Essence Drain.
For bossing, place Flame Wall and Frost Bomb on the boss, and use Skeletal Sniper's Gas Arrow afterwards. Gas Arrow will detonate when it touches an ignited enemy, dealing insane damage.
When you get Raging Spirits after Freythorn, summon them with Flame Wall when Gas Arrow is on cooldown. Don't forget to keep exposure up with Frost Bomb.
In Act 3, you'll start using 
Elemental Weakness. Just cast this before your normal rotation.
Bind Spectre (Vaal Guard, 50 spirit) doesn't change how you play whatsoever, but they bring a lot of power.

Soulless Form
You'll get your third ascendancy at the end of the campaign. Follow your endgame build for that.
