Build Overview

INTRODUCTION - GIVE ME THE CLICK BAIT

Lightning Spear was king of DotH

Until Whirling Slash

The ultimate 1-button potato deleter is here, and it works on almost every class.

THERE IS NO FASTER DELETER OF ALL MAP CONTENT THAN THIS BUILD. A T16 80% Deli 10-mod Waystone feels the same as a white T15.

CHOOSE YOUR CLASS - I DON'T WANT TO REROLL ANOTHER CHAR AND SUFFER THE CAMPAIGN AGAIN

Each class that can build around this skill has pros and cons, which I like to conceptualize in terms of COST and CEILING. How much more powerful can the build get on this class (ceiling), and how costly is it to get it to power level of x?

Here is my assessment:

Highest ceiling, most expensive to reach:

  • Ritualist
  • Gemling Legionnaire
  • Amazon

Lower ceiling, but much more cost-effective:

  • Deadeye
  • Bloodmage

Trying to not to be too wordy, but some explanation so you can make your choice:

Gemling and Ritualist both capitalize on stat-stacking to achieve incredibly high speed+DPS combinations that Deadeye and Bloodmage simply cannot realize. BUT, without that gear, both classes are significantly weaker than Deadeye and Bloodmage because of inherent Ascendancy power.

Deadeye and Bloodmage have cheat-codes for achieving the damage and speed numbers. Deadeye's Frenzy charge capitulation along with Tailwind, and Bloodmage's unforgettable boss-deletion mechanics make them less gear-dependent. BUT, if you plan to pop tags and shell out for the most expensive gear, the ceiling is not as high for min/max potential here.

Lastly, there's Amazon. The lone wolf, out trying to find a true identity amidst so much OP options this season. Amazon is the only build that can truly get away with using a Rare Spear rather than Tangletongue, and to this extent, it can have a very high ceiling, but such a spear by itself is many hundreds of divines in cost. If you plan to Tangletongue on Amazon, then you should just be on Deadeye or Ritualist in my humble opinion. If you have 700 divines in your bank account, and you just love Amazon, you can achieve INCREDIBLY high speed+crit with this class.

WHY DEADEYE - OMFG DEADEYE IS ALWAYS SO GOOD WHY GGG

For this guide, I'm going to focus on Deadeye, because I think it offers the most ideal blend of approachable cost and powerful ceiling. There is nothing you can't delete without just a few medium-cost gear pieces, and scaling up with more investment is possible.

We are capitalizing on Deadeye's Gathering Winds properties (all of them) and on the 2x Frenzy Consumption (Thrilling Chase) to double up on Charge Infusion for speed and Whirlwind Lance AOE stage modifier. This gives us incredible power at NO COST, and this is why Deadeye is ideal.

For bossing, stack unlimited combo with Rapid Assault and then unleash with Primal Strikes, juiced up by Culmination. Pinnacle bosses are are also deletable (Arbiter, Xesht, Olroth ... ), but admittedly the Bleed Bros still win-out on boss efficiency.

This guide will feature the most direct path to auto-deletion, which includes staples like Tangletongue, Sacred Flame, Trinity, and The Coming Calamity.

THINGS YOU WILL FORGET ABOUT - BECAUSE YOU ARE A POTATO TOO

Every build has what we call in developer world "gotchas", little quirks that you did not realize (some good, some bad). Your awareness of these is essential. Here they are:

Trinity only works because we run Sacred Flame, which gives 50%+ fire to everything. BUT, on your herald you must run an Embitter gem to convert that fire to cold. The remaining balance comes in the form of lightning from Herald of Thunder. Generally, if you aren't seeing the 3 colors full on the Trinity icon in the top-right, the most likely cause is not enough lightning. To resolve, you need more "flat" lightning damage "to attacks" on your gear pieces.

Trinity needs to be level 23, achieve this with a level 20 gem + Lightning Mastery + Cold Mastery + Fire Mastery. Trinity also needs all 3 elements nearly maxed out to achieve the attack speed boost (there is no inherent attack speed buff, it comes as a product of high "resonance"). ... Trinity is generally confusing for new potatoes, just get the 3 colors by doing equal amounts of all 3 damage as consistently as possible.

Your lower level Whirling Slash does more damage the higher the level of the gem. You will see some build guides / PoBs have it at level 1, and that is because the damage from gear/passives is so high that they just want to minimize the mana cost. If you are a poor man like me, a level 1 is absurdly underpowered for damage. Scale the damage by leveling the gem, and at some moment you will strike a perfect balance between mana cost and damage. Run Font of Mana in your AOE Whirly, and also Clarity in your Sacred Flame for some assistance. You can also stat a mana leech affix to your gloves or a ring if needed.

To apply the Shocked Ground to your large AOE whirly you need to actually take a movement step with Wake of Destruction equipped. Then swap back.

The AOE of your pre-buff Whirlwind Lance can be permanently boosted by Area of Effect nodes on the tree, which can be reserved to your WEAPON SET 2 skill points. On the passive tree you will see how these are allocated to swap 2. Bind this Whirling to only work on weapon set 2, and the damage-dealing slash to only work on weapon set 1. You don't want to slash bad.

COMBO builds all the time, and currently the Culmination gem in Primal Strikes is BUGGED, where it does not reset the combo value. Some bros are socketing this into Whirling Slash to get free infinite scaling damage. I do not recommend this, for so many reasons. The three main ones are: 1) you don't need it to begin with, 2) you don't want to have to slowly build up the Whirly damage - it can be high damage all the time anyway, 3) you need it on Primal Strikes. ... ALL THAT SAID, you can quick tap Primal Strikes during whirly combat. This can be essential for content like SIM 4, where you are passively Slashing mobs (and your combo is up to 200), then Kosis spawns. If you quick tap Primal Strikes, Kosis deletes.

Because of Pinpoint Shot, your SPEED is conflated with your CRIT CHANCE. If you are not at 100% crit-cap, you will inherently be slower. This can be patched in Whirling Slash with a Pinpoint Critical support gem. This will reduce the DPS of Whirly, but give you the missing speed back for free (without altering your tree).

Mini-stuns are the 7th-circle of the league. To avoid them you can put Unbreakable in your lower level damage-dealing Whirling Slash. However, I've found this still doesn't do the trick (because mini stuns are the 7th circle). Allocate Unwavering Stance to never be stunned again. And, you can do it without pathing over there on your tree with a From Nothing for Bulwark -- OP OP!

WAAA MY BUILD IS STILL NOT WORKING - THINGS ARE NOT DELETING

Don't worry, that happened for me to, and almost everyone else. That's because POE2 is subtly and beautifully complex. And somewhere the complexity has been lost in your assessment of the build. Fear not, you are a part of a community of like-minded potatoes who, for some reason, want to help you.

I respond to all YT comments and am regularly available on my Discord server for questions. We even have a few labeled "POE GURUS" who are actual not-potatoes, and whose understanding of game intricacies are like those who split the atom. Come collab with us.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Speed/Efficiency
  • Mapping (even T16 100 Deli / whatever)
  • Sim 4
  • Breachstones
  • Logbooks
  • OP map terrain objects

Build Variants

At this point in the season, only an End Game variant will be featured. If you have questions about alternative approaches, please drop in video comments or reach out in Discord under Whirly-Slash-Potato channel.

NOT LISTED are the boots you need for swap, which are Wake of Destruction. See "How it Works" section for what you do here. There was a theory about using Strugglescream with 3 AOE anoints for more AOE on the swap, recommend Colossal Weapon, Devastation, and Explosive Impact for the anoints here. In my testing this does not work, but community bros will tell you about it, so I thought I'd let you know. :)

JEWELS are not complicated. If you are not at max crit chance, you want Crit Chance affix. No matter what, you want Crit Bonus affix (there are several of them). If you want to add tankiness, get % Energy Shield. If you want to sexy up the AOE, get AOE buff affix. There are Time-Lost Emerald and Time-Lost Sapphire which combo all of these mods and which are very HOT and very EXPENSIVE. These are not needed, but do assist greatly with damage scaling for Pinnacle bosses.

I have imported exact items to the guide but obviously EXACT is not required.

PRIORITY

#1 - Tangle

-- get your twice-crit hit on Tangletongue to 100% however you see fit. Easiest way is to get a 22%+ corrupted Tangle and then max the rest with passive / gems / other gear.

https://www.pathofexile.com/trade2/search/poe2/Dawn%20of%20the%20Hunt/Wz4MyGvCm

#2 - SF or Lyco

-- get a 55%+ Sacred Flame. If you cannot afford SF, then Lycosidae is an awesome swap, which will double your accuracy for Falcon Dive, HIGHLY increase your attacks per second, add ~40% block chance for defensive layer. In some approach to this build, Lyco is preferred over Sacred Flame, to me SF makes the build more potato-y, and terrain sticking is less common with somewhat lower speed and higher delete. If you opt for Lyco, you will need to find other means for your actual flat damage.

https://www.pathofexile.com/trade2/search/poe2/Dawn%20of%20the%20Hunt/B0ZOJ4XS8

#3 - Rings + Ingenuity

-- you need two decent rings with Ingenuity. Focus for the rings is 2x FLAT damage rolls and then 400-500+ Accuracy Rating. Add stats, rarity, and resists with remaining suffixes if needed.

https://www.pathofexile.com/trade2/search/poe2/Dawn%20of%20the%20Hunt/K4ELkrMi5

#4 - Rare Amulet

-- the amulet is flexible. Spirit is not required, but helps with gem flexibility. You can run a +3 melee skills ammy for more DPS on bosses with Primal Strikes. The required components of the amulet are 400+ Accuracy and some form of Crit (Crit Chance or Crit Bonus, 20% or higher).

https://www.pathofexile.com/trade2/search/poe2/Dawn%20of%20the%20Hunt/GVJ7DP3hb

#5 - Coming Calamity

-- The Coming Calamity is actually not "Best in Slot", but replacing it is extremely expensive (hundreds of Div). With CC you will neutralize all enemy elemental resists, gain a 3x 35+ elemental resist (+2 sockets), gain effectively 60-90 spirit from free Heralds, have permanent uptime of Ice Bite and Innervate, and have an easy time balancing Trinity. Defensively, it is much weaker than a Rare Chest with high Evasion/ES, but at 1-2 Div to get started, it is an amazingly quick slot with incredible value. Because of the guaranteed resist neutralizing effect, it is my preferred option. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but Herald of Ash seems to work without Strength requirement met (it is active but cannot be socketed -- also don't hover over it, game is bugged and crashes when you do this).

#6 - Rare Gloves

-- The gloves are the only rare where particular stats are fairly important, and there are varying approaches. 2x FLAT DAMAGE rolls is required. 400+ Accuracy is required. From here you can slot Crit Chance or Bonus, Attack Speed, Melee Skills, Leech, or stats/resists if you need them. If you are on Deadeye, do not be baited by Hand of Wisdom and Action, they do not pan out even close to the umph of rare gloves unless you are stat stacking. If you are stat stacking, you should be on Gemling or Ritualist.

#7 - Remaining Slots

-- Of course meeting stat requirements and capping your resistances is important. Outside of this, the priority is always: Flat damage, Accuracy, Crit Bonus (after crit cap), then defense.

SIDE NOTE

-- YOU DO NOT NEED MOVEMENT SPEED ON YOUR BOOTS. This makes boots your most flexible spot as really strong boots with 0 MS are very cheap.

ZOMG THAT IS A LOT OF SPIRIT

Total: 280 (or 220)

Trinity 100

Cast on Critical 90 or Combat Frenzy 30

Charge Infusion 30

Wind Dancer 30

Ghost Dance 30

Herald of Ice 0

Herald of Thunder 0

Herald of Ash 0

This is a lot (even with Sacred Flame).

An alternative is to generate frenzy charges with Combat Frenzy instead of Cast on Critical+Sniper's Mark. Cast on Crit can then be toggled on for bosses (TOGGLE off Trinity or Combat Frenzy if sufficient), since Combat Frenzy will not trigger on bosses. This swap brings the total to 220, which is very reasonable with a Sacred Flame giving you 110.

From Nothing for Dance with Death is very helpful for padding the Spear Nodes + Acceleration

Alternatively, a From Nothing with Bulwark allows you to get Unwavering Stance ... if you find that mini-stuns are your greatest source of frustration, consider this.

Atlas Tree

This IMO is best atlas in general and best for Whirly with the additional shrine chance. Acceleration shrine is nice, but TBH moving too fast is a problem for efficient mapping (you get stuck on terrain a lot more frequently and you fly past items you are trying to pick up). Shoot for 75-100 rarity on your gear, and juicy maps, and you should be cookin.

I have a video guide for mapping in the DotH season here.

I also have a video guide for crafting good waystones here.

How it Plays

Hold right click, delete everything. :D

TBH boss approach is reasonably technical. You are charging Combo (which most new POE2 players don't know exists) using Rapid Assault with Practiced Combo socketed in. Depending on the boss, when you hit the combo amount you want, you get a MORE damage multiplier per combo on Primal Strikes. (For Xesht, for instance, get to about 100 for a comfortable 2-3 second deletion of T4 Xesht). If you notice the DPS at 100 is not what you want it to be, just spend more time building combo and kiting. NOTE: you can build combo with whirling slash, it is just slower. You can use the Cast on Critical setup to increase combo amount faster.

How it Works

The main catch to this build is the "pre-buff". You create a LARGE AOE Whirlwind Lance, that the smaller Whirling Slash absorbs and uses throughout the instance. Then you absorb an element (shock) to gain 50% damage of that element and permanent shock application.

On entering instance, use the level 20 Whirlwind Lance with AOE gems to create a large radius whirling slash in place. Swap to Wake of Destruction boots and move slightly to drop Shocked Ground. The Whirly picks up the lightning as 50% damage, and then passively shocks all monsters. From here, you switch to the lower level Whirling Slash. Hold down right-click to move at the speed of your Attacks Per Second (which should be over 5 in combat).
