How to Find the Old Camp
Shortly after starting the game, players will meet Diego, who will offer to lead them to the Old Camp. From the starting area, walk along the path until you find a settlement to your left, across a bridge.
How to Join the Old Camp in Gothic 1 Remake
The Old Camp won't just throw its gates open for a stranger from the valley. Before you can call yourself one of their own and start enjoying the perks, you'll need to prove you're worth vouching for. That means tracking down a handful of high-ranking members, doing them each a favor, and earning their trust the hard way.
It all kicks off once you speak to Thorus and Diego near the North Gate, which unlocks the "Admission to the Old Camp" quest. From there, you'll need to complete three quests for influential members to earn your place. Here's how to get it done:
Talk to Diego and Thorus near the North Gate to start the "Admission to the Old Camp" quest.
Complete "Out of Sight" for Thorus — escort the New Camp trader Mordreg out of the camp by asking him to lead you to the New Camp (no need to kill him).
Complete "A Ring for Fingers" — steal the ring from the chest in Scatty's hut, just east of Fingers' elevated perch.
Complete "The Vanished Warder" for Sly — follow the trail through Fletcher and Snaf to the cave past the south gate, clear out the Molerats, and recover Nek's amulet (grab the Weathered Axe while you're there).
Complete "Whistler's Sword" — buy the ornamented sword from Fisk and hand it to Whistler.
Return to Diego once you've earned the favor of three high-ranking members - He’ll give you the quest “Test of Faith”.
Complete “Test of Faith” and return to Diego. Once you reach Level 5, you will be granted passage into the castle and an audience with Gomez.
Talk to Gomez inside the Castle to join the Old Camp.
Below you will find a detailed walkthrough for each of these quests.
Admission to the Old Camp
Once inside the Old Camp, players must talk to Thorus and Diego to unlock the quest “Admission to the Old Camp”. This quest guides the player toward key NPCs who can vouch for them when joining the ranks of the Old Camp.
You can find Diego and Thorus near the North Gate of the Old Camp. Diego will sit either beside the fire or in the hut below, and Thorus will guard the castle gate during the daytime.
Once you talk to Diego, he will instruct you to talk to various high-ranking members of the Old Camp and complete quests for them to get their favor. Once you complete three of these quests, you’ll be granted access to the Old Camp.
Out of Sight
You can start the quest “Out of Sight” by talking to Thorus in the northern castle gates during the day. This quest involves getting rid of Mordreg, a New Camp trader that sits near the southern gate of the Old Camp, sitting outside a hut.
Once you talk to Mordreg, you’ll find that you do not necessarily need to kill him to get him gone - Instead, you can let him show you the way to the New Camp. Inquire about the New Camp and its location, and Mordreg will offer to lead the way. Then, follow him along the path. Once you reach the New Camp, come back to Thorus to mark the quest as completed.
A Ring for Fingers
After talking to Diego near the northern entrance to the North Camp, he will ask you to visit Fingers to gain his favor. You can find him by walking left from the castle gate. You’ll find him at the entrance of an elevated hut.
Fingers will vouch for you if you complete the quest he gives, which involves stealing a ring from Scatty’s hut. It is the one colliding with Finger’s hut, to its right.
Inside, you’ll find a chest with a 5-lock combination that you need to solve. Follow the sequence below to open the chest:
Pin 4 - Right x3
Pin 2 - Right x2
Pin 5 - Right x2
Pin 3 - Left x2
Pin 5 - Right x2
Pin 1 - Right x2
Pin 4 - Right x2
Pin 2 - Right x1
Pin 5 - Right x4
Pin 2 - Right x1
Among the loot in the chest is Scatty’s Ring. Hand it over to Fingers to complete the quest and earn his favor.
The Vanished Warder
To the right of the Old Camp’s northern gate sits Sly, one of the high-ranking members of the camp. When talking to him, he will give you the quest “The Vanished Warder”, in which you’ll have to find a lost member of the camp.
Sly will point you toward Fletcher, who roams the area around the fighting pit. When talking to him, he’ll then redirect you to Snaf, the cook nearby. Finally, he will give you a hint as to where the man you’re looking for is.
You will need to head out from the Old Camp’s south gate. You’ll immediately see a big boulder to your right.
When walking past it, you will notice a small cave entrance to the right of the road. That’s where you need to go. However, three Molerats are guarding the cave, and you will need to defeat them to safely retrieve the items inside.
The Molerats have simple lunging attacks, which you can block or sidestep, and a borrow attack that must be dodged with precise timing. Try to lure them out one by one and avoid getting surrounded by them.
Once you have defeated them, enter the cave to find Nek’s remains. His amulet is a key item that you’ll need to hand over to Sly later. Don’t forget to pick up the Weathered Axe, which is one of the best early game weapons you can find, as well as other loot inside the cave.
Finally, head back to the Old Camp and talk to Sly. He’ll ask for proof that you’ve found Nek, so give him the amulet to finish this quest.
Whistler’s Sword
In the southern part of the camp, you’ll find a covered area with several NPCs in it. Near the outer wall sits Whistler, who will give you a quest when talking to him. This one requires to buy a special ornamented sword from Fisk, a vendor that sits outside a hut in the inner wall of the covered area.
When talking to Fisk, you’ll be given the option to ask for a special sword. He will then tell you that the sword costs 110 Nuggets.
If you try to bargain the price down to 100 Nuggets, you’ll be locked out of buying the sword. Instead, buy it, or go back to Whistler to get the extra coins. Either way, you’ll be given the full cash for the sword.
To finish the quest, go back to Whistler and hand over the sword. This will make him vouch for you when it’s time to join the ranks of the Old Camp.
Test of Faith
This quest becomes available after you’ve earned the favor of three Old Camp members and asked Diego about your reputation in the Camp.
Diego will ask you to enter the Old Mine and get a list of provisions from “”, using a code phrase. First, though, you can get a free map from Graham, who sits near the Northern Gate entrance to the Old Camp. You can get the map for free if you select the dialogue option “I’m not paying”.
The Old Mine sits North-East of the Old Camp. You’ll have to exit through the northern gate and turn left after crossing the bridge, then take the road through the forest. The path has several enemies, including Scavengers, Molerats, and Bloodflies, and even Wolves and Goblins if you stray from the main path. If you lack the resources to fight these enemies, you should run until you reach the Old Mine.
Inside the Old Mine, you’ll meet NPCs like Drake and Santino, who will inform you about the situation there. To reach Ian, you’ll need to follow the planks that spiral down from the top level.
If you follow the planks without exiting the main cave, you’ll eventually have to use a ladder. Finally, you’ll see Ian in the storage area directly to your right.
When talking to Ian, select “The crawlers look mighty hungry” and he’ll give you the list you are looking for. Go back to the Old Camp and deliver the letter to Diego to complete the quest.
Talk to Gomez and Join the Old Camp
To join the Old Camp, you need to be granted an audience with Gomez inside the Castle, which has three requisites:
Gaining the favor of at least three Old Camp members.
Completing the quest “Test of Faith”
Reaching Level 5
Afterwards, talk to Diego and then Thorus, who will let you into the castle. You can access several new NPCs and vendors now, although not all of them will be friendly yet. You will need to rise through the Old Camp rankings until they recognize you.
Enter the castle and talk to Raven, who will direct you to Gomez. Make sure to save before talking to him, as selecting the wrong dialogue choices could make him attack you.
Choose the sentence “I got around a bit - I know people in all the camps”, and then, mention every name EXCEPT “Y’Berion”, as he is not welcomed in the Old Camp. This will make you join the Old Camp, which is a permanent choice in your playthrough - You’ll be locked out of joining the New Camp or the Swamp Camp.
On your way out, talk to Raven again to start Chapter 2, “The Minecrawler’s Nest”.
A Letter for the Fire Mages
IMPORTANT: You can deliver the Sealed Letter to the Fire Mage Milten, which will complete the quest “A Letter for the Fire Mages”. You’ll find Milten in the castle area. Deliver the letter to him to complete the quest and get a reward from Torrez, who can now be found next to the mage building. He will let you choose one of the following rewards:
Ring of Dexterity (+5 Dexterity)
Ring of Strength (+5 Strength)
Potion (+2 Mana permanently)
Scrolls (Transform into Lizard, Fireball and Ball Lightning)
