Monster Hunter WildsGravios Guide - Weaknesses, Location, Armor & More

Overview

Gravios is a returning Flying Wyvern in Monster Hunter Wilds. This Flying Wyvern is known for its rock-hard shell and the fire and gasses it can emit.

As of the first launch patch, Gravios is only available as a High Rank fight. With a mountainous physique, powerful fire beams, and an arsenal of gases, it's one of the most memorable fights as you make your way through HR missions.

This guide is written by @dxvis.

Location

Gravios can be seen in the Oilwell Basin. It prefers roaming the region’s lowest levels, which are filled with lava. It can be later be found at the Ruins of Wyveria.

How to Prepare

Gravios’s attacks are physical and of the Fire element. It can also emit fire, Poison, and Sleep gasses around itself. Most of its attacks are telegraphed and can be avoided if you see them coming. That is why skills like Evade Extender are great against Gravios.

This monster has a hard shell which can make weapons bounce off or deal less damage, so it is important to bring weapons with great sharpness.

Mechanics to Look Out For

Gravios’s Rock Shell

Gravios’s body is initially covered in a hard shell, deflecting attacks on its head and wings and causing them to deal less damage on its belly, legs, and back. You’ll need to bring weapons with Blue sharpness to avoid deflects.

Breaking body parts will expose Gravios’ flesh, making the broken body part a weak point.

Frontal Fire Beam

Gravios will stand up fully and raise his wings high in the air, while looking straight at the player before emitting a fire laser directly to its front. This attack has some tracking, so don’t stop moving until it’s out. Sometimes, after firing lasers, a temporary wound can appear on Gravios’ head. Hit with a Focus Strike to deal immense damage and knock it down.

Sideways Fire Beam

Gravios can fire a beam from left to right. This has the same tell as the frontal firebeam, except its head makes a rotating motion before it shoots fire. This attack comes out quick, so be ready to follow it to its right or to time a perfect dodge through it.

If you are having trouble spotting these two fire beam variations, you can always try to dodge left for the initial beam attack, and then right again, if needed, if it’s a sideways fire beam.

Double Fire Beam

Gravios will take a deep breath while moving backwards before emitting a fire laser downwards, and finally upwards again. Gravios will try to re-aim it the second time, so you may need to dodge twice.

Downward Fire Beam

Gravios will assume his fire beam pose, but his head will face straight down this time. It then fires a beam directly beneath it, which causes the floor to explode after a brief delay. This attack usually hits hunters aiming for its belly and legs. Keep an eye out on its head and dodge sideways or back to avoid it.

Leap and Body Smash

Gravios will flap its wings and attempt to fly before smashing its body down. If one of its wings has been broken, this attack will fail, causing a knockdown.

Gas Release

Gravios can release gas with elemental effects directly beneath it. Avoid it by dodging out of the way. The gases it releases can cause fire, poison and sleep.

180 Degree Tail Swipe

Gravios can perform a slow tail swipe that covers a significant distance, similarly to other flying wyverns. A weak spot appears on his tail after the attack.

Tail Sever

Attacking the monster's tail can cause it to sever. This will severely limit the danger of its tails swipe move.

Body Check

If you stay near Gravios long enough, it can go on its side. This is a signal that it’s preparing a hip check. This attack covers its whole body in length, but doesn’t have much reach, so dodge or walk backwards to avoid it.

Charge

Gravios will perform a small roar before charging forward. Due to its immense size, it’s best to stop attacking during it’s standing roar in order to move back and then dodge sideways to avoid this attack.

Charge Into Other Moves

While enraged, Gravios can cancel its charge and instantly perform another move. Keep your guard up, as sometimes there will be no openings in between attacks.

Roll

Gravios will tilt its body upward before rolling to either side. After this attack, it will rest for a short time on the ground, and a temporary wound will appear on its back. Dodge to its front or back to avoid this attack.

Walking Fire Balls - Triple Fireball

Gravios will spit three fire balls aimed at the player while walking forward. The timing is a bit tricky, since the first fireball comes out faster than its other firebeam attacks.

To recognize this attack, watch its wings. If they stay low and near its side instead of high up in the air, this means the fireballs are coming! Dodge fast for the first fireball, and afterwards don’t spam evade, and be patient for the second and third fireball to time your dodges right!

Roar

Gravios can roar after attacks or simply roar by itself. This can create a weak spot on its head, so watch out for this in Focus Mode.

Weak Spots to Focus

  • Body Weak Points: Head, Belly, Back, Tail
  • Severable Points: Tail
  • Breakable Points: All

Gravios’s belly, wings and tail are its softest body parts. However, he will only take decent damage from broken body parts where its skin is exposed –particularly, its belly– so keep hitting a single body part to cause Wounds to appear.
