Your Ultimate is a strong ability. If you can, try to use it as often as you can. This can be made easier by keeping the wave near your tower as you can pull the enemy into your tower.
Try to use your Ultimate on the enemy in team fights when they’re grouped together. Locking down as many champions and carries as possible.
Look to win lane and roam around the map. Use your E to gank the mid-lane and help them. Whenever you want to use your E in lane, check the map so you don’t over-extend and then get ganked!

If you want to use the most popular Skarner Top build, you should take Flash and Teleport as your Summoner Spells. For runes, you should pick Grasp of the Undying as your keystone, followed by Shield Bash, Conditioning and Overgrowth in the primary tree, as well as Approach Velocity and Magical Footwear in the secondary tree. For rune shards, you want Ability Haste in offense, Health Scaling in flex and Health Scaling in defense, though it depends on the matchup.
