Everybody Is Talking About Classic Plus

Okay, WoW Classic Plus.

It's a game that no one really knows anything about, but yet everybody cannot stop talking about it. Content creators are spamming every single minuscule piece of information or non-information we actually get about it, and the speculation at this point is just absolutely absurd.

All we know is that it's almost definitely, inevitably, probably, going to happen but no one actually knows if it's going to be Classic or WoW 2 or some kind of retail WoW Classic hybrid, and despite the fact that no one has a clue, everybody is seriously excited.

For more background on the rumors, check out our WoW Classic+ and Project Camelot overview.

The Current State of World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft is in quite a peculiar place, really. It has an incredibly dedicated player base, including myself, and to be fair, there's actually loads of different ways you can play WoW at the moment.

You've obviously got retail, if that's your thing. You've got Classic Era for vanilla vibes. You have TBC Anniversary if you want to enjoy killing Illidan again for potentially the third time.

There's also Season of Discovery if you fancy giving that a go, if you missed it last time around. You have Mists of Pandaria Classic, which is still going from the 2019 Classic servers, and of course, definitely not forgetting Hardcore WoW either.

But despite the fact there are so many of these versions of WoW available, everybody is still hungry for something more.

What Exactly Is Classic Plus?

So that's where ‘Classic Plus’, or whatever it ends up being, comes into play.

Every Classic WoW fan wants this to be the answer. We've had teasers from Blizzard themselves. We've had content creators fly out to Blizzard HQ to try out some new version of Classic, and basically all we've seen on YouTube and on Twitch for the last 18 months is people hankering for a new version of WoW to play.

And when I say new, I actually mean old, but better.

Yes, we have seriously played the hell out of WoW Classic by now, so BlizzCon will hopefully hold all the answers we're looking for.

But what does everybody actually want, and when do they want it?

When Could Classic Plus Release?

Well, for many players, it's the sooner the better, really.

I'd expect after the announcement at BlizzCon, we're probably likely to see something relatively quickly. Maybe November is a realistic expectation.

If we're judging it based on Season of Mastery, Season of Discovery, and the anniversary servers, which all released in November in their respective years, that gives everyone just a few months after the announcement at BlizzCon to book those weeks off work and cancel your Christmas plans.

They might end up dropping it immediately after BlizzCon, but I would expect a few months after the announcement to build a bit more hype, although I'm not actually sure that's possible. People are pretty excited about this game.

The BlizzCon 2026 Schedule

But before we talk about some of the most wanted features or changes or systems from WoW Classic Plus, let's take a quick look at the BlizzCon schedule.

Obviously, there's plenty of rumors about other games that Blizzard are bringing. There's also much more information about Diablo and the future of that, but here, we're just focusing on WoW.

World of Warcraft: What’s Next?

So I think we can expect what we usually see from the opening ceremony: a bunch of insights as to all of Blizzard's games.

But then shortly after that, we have ‘World of Warcraft: What's Next?’

And if you read the text, it says ‘A look at the next chapter of Azeroth with new adventures, features, and surprises for players old and new.’

I'm pretty sure most people that play this game are pretty old by now. Sorry, guys, but hey, at least we're all in the same boat.

But I would definitely expect this first part to talk about Classic Plus if we are going to get the announcement this weekend, which is what everyone thinks is going to happen.

Then we have a one hour break, so this could be more about Classic Plus or maybe a brand new game we haven't seen before.

World of Warcraft: What’s Next 2?

Then a bit later on, we have ‘World of Warcraft: What's Next 2’, which is probably going to be the more retail side of things, as the text there suggests, previews towards upcoming adventures, features, and updates.

Maybe we'll see what's beyond The Last Titan for the future of retail.

WoW Developer x Creator Showcase

Then a bit later on, we have the WoW Developer x Creator Showcase.

Maybe that's the group of creators that flew over to Blizzard HQ a few months back to try out a potential Classic Plus under NDA? Who knows.

World of Warcraft Deep Dive

Then onto the next day of BlizzCon, there's a World of Warcraft Deep Dive.

Once again, on the main stage, therefore I would expect it to be something pretty exciting here, and honestly, I'm just super grateful to see these deep dives come back into play again.

After that, there are also some panels for creative coziness for player housing, world building, art design, as well as an exclusive panel just for the future of WoW Hardcore too, which at this point is a bit of a timeless version of the game that many players often find themselves going back to for another leveling journey.

Okay, so aside from all the other exciting stuff for all the other games at BlizzCon 2026, there's just a few of the obvious sections where we might see more information about Classic Plus.

What Do Players Actually Want From Classic Plus?

Now let's talk about what players actually want from it, and we can definitely say that this topic is quite divisive.

But the number one thing we can all agree on is that we all want a version of WoW that really feels like WoW again.

What I mean by this is something that captures the immersion of leveling, the social side of being encouraged to group up along your journey organically, and experiencing the feeling of upgrading your items, completing well thought out quest chains, and actually not playing a 100% solved version of the game.

New Quests, Zones, Dungeons and Raids

New quests, improved or new zones, along with dungeons and raids, are an absolute no-brainer and widely regarded as some of the most important and obvious things most players want to see.

If Classic Plus is a fleshed out, improved, and updated version of Vanilla, this is pretty much the first thing you'd expect to be included.

Season of Discovery's additional content like Karazhan Crypts and the Scarlet Enclave were great examples of successful new but fitting additions to the game.

Specializations, Classes and Races

New specializations, classes, races, and race-class combos are again quite divisive depending on what makes WoW feel right for you.

But I do think at the very least we'll see some improved specializations, as quite a few specs in Vanilla were pretty underwhelming, to say the least.

Nobody wants to see 25 warriors in every raid again, guys.

What Should the Raid Size Be?

Speaking of which, that's a good question.

What raid sizes would you want to see? 40-man, 25, 20, 10, a mixture, maybe even flex raid sizes so you can always bring the perfect amount of guildies.

Graphics, Character Models and Modern Features

The question of graphics and character models is pretty split too, so maybe an option to toggle on or off depending on your preference.

Then there's other features like updated professions, modern systems like transmog, dungeon and raid finder, the UI and interface, a PvP overhaul, world buffs, flying mounts, guild banks, and so many more questions we just don't know if we'll have the answer for.

All of these conversations about all of these features have been had time and time again, and the truth is, without knowing what's coming this weekend, it's just an endless pool of speculation.

But it's that speculation and all these conversations that build towards the hype.

What version of the game are we going to get? Is it going to be a flop, or is it going to redefine the entire future of Classic World of Warcraft?

The Future of Mists of Pandaria Classic

Now, aside from Classic Plus, WoW fans are also hoping to get some answers on the future of the existing versions.

Will Mists of Pandaria progress into Warlords of Draenor Classic, and if not, what happens to those characters?

Will they stay on MOP-era servers, or will they travel to the future and join Retail or something?

The Future of TBC Anniversary

Then there's TBC Anniversary, which was always confirmed since the start of its cycle to progress into the Burning Crusade, but we've never had any confirmation of it progressing to Wrath of the Lich King.

If it will, when will that happen?

Because if Blizzard do release Classic Plus soon, all of these other servers will definitely be impacted.

If no Wrath, will we see TBC-era servers?

Because judging from the raiding population this year, it's still incredibly popular, even if many players see it as a Classic Plus waiting room.

To be honest, though, with just how much money must be being generated by boosts on these anniversary servers, I'd imagine it won't be the last time we play this original trilogy, even if we're already doing it for the third time.

Why BlizzCon 2026 Is So Important

So BlizzCon 2026 is arguably one of the most anticipated weekends for WoW fans for quite some time, and although many players are trying to avoid too much copium, I think it's fine to be excited and hope that we can still all keep playing amazing versions of this timeless game.

Whether that's diving into something completely new and unknown but with the same Classic feel, or just actually understanding more about the future of all the different versions.
