WoW Classic+ is the community name for a rumored new version of Classic World of Warcraft that would preserve the original game’s charm while expanding Azeroth with new content.
Rather than progressing through the same expansions again, Classic+ could introduce new zones, quests, dungeons, raids and class changes while retaining the slower progression, social interaction and immersive world that made Classic WoW so popular.
Blizzard has not officially announced Classic+ or confirmed exactly what it would include. However, years of community speculation, recent developer teases and the discovery of a mysterious project codenamed Camelot have convinced many players that something new is being developed.
What Is Project Camelot?
Project Camelot is the name reportedly connected to a mysterious internal World of Warcraft build discovered by community dataminers.
The build has been associated with a separate 1.60 branch, leading players to believe it could be something larger than another temporary Classic season. Many fans now use Camelot as an unofficial codename for Classic+, although Blizzard has never confirmed that the two are connected.
Internal codenames can refer to technical tests, unfinished projects or games that change significantly before release. Even if Camelot is real, it is also unlikely to be the project’s final public name.
Speculation has grown further following reports that several prominent Classic WoW content creators visited Blizzard under NDA. Nobody outside Blizzard knows what they were shown, but the timing has added to the belief that a new Classic experience could be approaching.
Why Do Players Want Classic+?
The launch of WoW Classic in 2019 proved that there was still a huge audience for the original style of World of Warcraft. Activision Blizzard described it as driving the biggest quarterly increase in WoW subscription plans in the franchise’s history.
Players returned for the slower levelling, meaningful gear progression and strong sense of community. Building a reputation on your server, finding a reliable group and finally earning a powerful item all felt like important parts of the experience.
Blizzard continued the Classic journey through The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria. These releases have remained popular, but they have also gradually moved further away from the original Vanilla version of the game.
Many Classic fans still love that older style of WoW but do not necessarily want to repeat the same content indefinitely. Classic+ could offer a solution by keeping the foundations of the original game while giving experienced players something new to discover.
Blizzard has also experimented with alternative versions of Classic. Season of Mastery launched in 2021 with changes to the familiar Vanilla cycle, while Season of Discovery followed in 2023 with new abilities, level caps, class roles and original content.
The Anniversary realms then offered another fresh journey through Vanilla WoW before progressing into The Burning Crusade, with selected quality of life improvements such as Dual Specialization.
Season of Discovery went further than any previous version. It gave classes abilities inspired by later expansions, transformed dungeons into raids and introduced original content such as the Scarlet Enclave. While not every change was universally popular, it provided Blizzard with an opportunity to test what worked before potentially creating a more permanent Classic experience.
What Do Players Want From Classic+?
There is no single version of Classic+ that will satisfy every player. Some want a cautious continuation of Vanilla WoW, while others would welcome major class changes, new races and completely unexplored areas of Azeroth.
The most commonly requested additions include:
New dungeons and raids
New or expanded levelling zones
More class quests and open-world content
Improvements to weaker classes and specializations
Additional race and class combinations
Improved professions
Dual Specialization and other quality-of-life changes
A refreshed PvP system
The challenge would be adding these features without removing the slower, more social style of gameplay that makes Classic different from modern World of Warcraft.
Community creators Joardee and OnlyBlacksmoke helped establish the Classic+ Project, a community driven initiative that uses surveys and discussions to understand what players want from the future of Classic WoW.
The project covers topics such as new raids, class design, levelling content and race options. Its results are not an official Blizzard roadmap, but they show the scale of the community’s interest and how many different ideas players have for Classic+.
WoW Classic+ Release Date
WoW Classic+ does not currently have a confirmed release date because Blizzard has not officially announced the game.
The next major opportunity for an announcement is BlizzCon 2026, which takes place on September 12 and 13. Blizzard has teased that Classic players have more to look forward to, making the event an obvious place for further news, but a Classic+ reveal is not guaranteed.
Some players believe it could arrive shortly after BlizzCon because Season of Mastery, Season of Discovery and the Anniversary realms all originally launched during November. However, there is currently no evidence that Classic+ will follow the same pattern or release in 2026.
Project Camelot could still be months or even years away, or it could turn out to be something different from the Classic+ experience fans currently imagine. For now, players will have to wait and see whether Blizzard finally reveals the future of Classic WoW at BlizzCon.
