Valheim 1.0: Trader Locations and What to Buy

Valheim's traders give your Coins a purpose, offering useful equipment, crafting materials, clothing, and ingredients that support your adventures. Finding the right merchant can help you carry more resources, improve your home, or prepare new food and meads.

This guide covers Haldor, Hildir, and the Bog Witch, including where to search, which purchases to prioritise, and how to unlock more of their stock.

Trader locations depend on your world seed, so coordinates from another player's world will not necessarily work in yours. Search the appropriate biome and watch for each merchant's map marker as you approach.

• Haldor: Black Forest, marked by a bag icon.
• Hildir: Meadows, marked by a shirt icon.
• The Bog Witch: Swamp, marked by a cauldron icon.

Once you discover a trader's camp, its location stays fixed. You may need to explore other islands to find one, so keep progressing while you search instead of expecting every merchant near your first base.

After finding a camp, place a connected Portal nearby, outside its protected area. This makes future shopping trips much easier. Take food and refresh Rested before longer searches; our Comfort and Rested guide explains how to extend the buff for your travels.

Haldor lives in the Black Forest. Approaching within roughly 290 metres reveals his bag marker on the map, helping you locate the camp before spotting the merchant himself.

His key items include:

• Megingjord — 950 Coins: Adds 150 carry weight when equipped. This is a strong first purchase for mining and gathering trips, when heavy materials can force you to return home frequently.
• Dverger Circlet — 620 Coins: Provides forward-facing light while worn, making it useful for exploring dark caves and other poorly lit areas.
• Ymir Flesh — 120 Coins: A crafting material used for weapons including Frostner and the Iron Sledge. It becomes available after defeating the Elder. Check the complete weapon recipe before buying, as you will still need its other materials.
• Fishing Rod — 350 Coins: Lets you catch fish for cooking and recipes as your food options expand.
• Fishing Bait — 10 Coins: Buy this alongside the rod so you have bait ready for your first fishing trip.

Hildir is Haldor's sister, and her camp is found in the Meadows. Look for the shirt marker while exploring; she stays at her camp rather than roaming around the biome.

Her shop focuses on clothing and items for your home. Some clothes reduce the Stamina used by tools for work around your base, giving them a practical use alongside their appearance. They offer little protection, so change back into suitable armour before a dangerous expedition.

To change your character's hair and beard, buy a Barber Kit for 600 Coins. This is a material used to build a Barber Station at home; you will also need the station's other construction materials. You can buy the kit when you first find Hildir, without completing her requests.

She has some goods available immediately, but recovering her missing chests unlocks more clothing for you to purchase.

Interact with the map table at Hildir's camp to mark the locations connected to her requests. These lead to special dungeons with minibosses guarding her missing chests.

There are three different chest types to recover:

• Brass Chest: Defeat Brenna in a Smouldering Tomb in the Black Forest.
• Silver Chest: Defeat Geirrhafa in a Howling Cavern in the Mountains.
• Bronze Chest: Defeat Zil and Thungr at a Sealed Tower in the Plains.

Return one of each chest type to Hildir to unlock the corresponding additions to her shop. You do not need to clear every marked copy of a dungeon to unlock her stock.

The Brass Chest also unlocks the Harvest Tunic, Harvest Dress, and Straw Hat. Wearing the hat with either harvest garment grants +25 Farming skill, making this a useful reward if you spend time working on crops.

Prepare for each dungeon's biome before attempting it. Finding Hildir in the Meadows does not mean all her requests are suitable for a new character. On default portal settings, her quest chests cannot pass through Portals, so plan how you will carry them back, including a boat journey where needed.

The Bog Witch lives in a hut in the Swamp, marked by a cauldron icon when you get close. Prepare for the surrounding biome before searching, with suitable food, equipment, and Poison Resistance Mead.

Her stock is useful when you want to expand your cooking and brewing options. She sells specialised ingredients and materials, and some purchases become available as you defeat bosses.

The main items to look for include:

• Feast ingredients: Herbs and spice blends are used in large meals that provide multiple servings. Woodland Herb Blend, available after the Elder, is one of the earlier options. Check which feast you can prepare before buying its ingredients.
• Mead ingredients: Items such as Cured Squirrel Hamstring and Fresh Seaweed are used in specific mead recipes. Buy for a recipe you intend to make, then prepare its base at a Mead Ketill and process it in a Fermenter.
• Scythe Handle — 200 Coins: Available after defeating Moder. The handle is used to craft a Scythe, which helps you harvest mature crops in groups. You still need the other crafting materials to make the tool.
• Serving Tray — 140 Coins: Used to place food and drink, including feasts, around your home.

The Bog Witch is worth revisiting as your recipes and equipment improve. If an ingredient is missing from her shop, check its progression requirement before continuing your search elsewhere.

Keep the valuables you find while exploring. Amber, Amber Pearls, Rubies, and Silver Necklaces can be sold to traders for Coins, and you can also find Coins in treasure chests and among certain enemy drops.

Store valuables together at home so you can bring them on your next shopping trip. Check the price of your planned purchase before setting off, and leave room for whatever you buy.

Early on, saving for the Megingjord gives you a clear target. After that, spend according to your next project: fishing equipment for a new food source, a Barber Kit for customisation, or ingredients for a specific meal or mead.
