Overview

Rested is one of the most useful buffs to build into your Valheim routine. It improves your recovery and skill training, making everyday gathering, exploration, and combat easier to manage. A comfortable home helps those benefits last longer once you leave it.

This Valheim 1.0 guide explains how to get Rested, what its bonuses do, how Comfort determines its duration, and which furniture rules matter when improving your base.

If you’re just starting out, check out our Valheim beginner’s guide for tips on food, shelter, and surviving your first few days in the Meadows.

How to Get the Rested Buff

You gain Rested by spending 20 continuous seconds resting. You can start resting by sitting beside a lit campfire, or by being inside a shelter near a fire. You do not need to sleep through the night to get the buff.

A small shelter with a working campfire is enough to establish this habit early. Keep the fire protected from rain and give smoke a route out of the building, so the place you use to recover remains safe.

If you are away from home, sitting beside a campfire can provide a useful refresh without building a complete base. Choose a safe spot, get dry, and wait until the Rested effect appears before continuing your journey.

If the effect is not appearing, check that the fire is lit, you are close enough to it, and you are actually resting. Wet conditions or nearby enemies can interrupt your preparation. Watch the status effects on your screen instead of assuming that standing near a fire has already given you the buff.

What the Rested Buff Gives You

Rested gives you 100% increased Stamina regeneration, doubling your base Stamina recovery rate. This helps you recover between running, jumping, mining, and weapon attacks.

It also provides 50% increased Health regeneration, improving your Health recovery over time and helping you recover between encounters.

The third benefit is 50% increased skill XP gain. This applies to all skills, including Run, Swords, and Bows, allowing you to gain more experience from the activities you perform while Rested is active.

The regeneration bonuses improve how quickly your resources recover. They do not increase your maximum Health or Stamina, so you still need suitable food and enough Stamina left to respond to danger.

The skill bonus also rewards actually using your skills. Sitting at home with Rested active does not train them for you; the benefit comes when you head out to fight, hunt, gather, and explore.

How Comfort Affects Rested Duration

Comfort determines how long Rested lasts. The base duration is 7 minutes at Comfort 0, and each additional Comfort level adds 1 minute.

Comfort 0 is the baseline for the calculation, while Comfort 1 gives you 8 minutes. In practice, the fire and shelter you use when resting contribute to your setup.

An early home can aim for Comfort 5–8, giving you 12–15 minutes of Rested. That is enough to make short gathering trips and nearby exploration more manageable before you unlock advanced furnishings.

As you unlock more furniture and decorations, you can push beyond Comfort 17 and make the buff last closer to half an hour. For example, Comfort 17 gives you 24 minutes, while Comfort 20 gives you 27 minutes. Your available furnishings determine how high you can take it.

Higher Comfort extends the timer, it does not make the regeneration or skill XP bonuses stronger. Improving your base gives you more time to benefit from the same bonuses while you are away.

Increase Comfort with the Right Furniture

Comfort depends on the types of furniture, decorations, and structures near your resting position. Beds, rugs, banners, seating, and other suitable furnishings can all help, but filling the room with repeated objects is not an efficient way to improve the total.

Start with a sheltered fire and a Bed, then add a variety of furnishings as their recipes become available. Keep them near the place where you actually rest. Decorations elsewhere in a large base will not necessarily contribute to that spot’s Comfort.

Many furnishings share a Comfort category, and only the highest value item in that category counts. For example:

  • Beds: A Dragon Bed provides the relevant bed contribution instead of adding its value on top of a basic Bed.
  • Chairs and seating: Placing several chairs does not repeatedly add the chair bonus.
  • Fires: Several campfires do not stack their Comfort contributions.
  • Rugs and banners: Adding more of the same category does not keep increasing the total.

Different furniture models can still belong to the same category. Choose variety across categories, then replace weaker pieces with better ones as you progress.

Why Rested Matters on Longer Trips

Stamina gives you room to recover from mistakes

Running out during a fight or while fleeing enemies can leave you unable to dodge, attack, or escape. Rested helps you recover between actions throughout a longer expedition, although you still need to manage how quickly you spend Stamina.

Environmental penalties make preparation more valuable

Cold nights and the Wet effect from rain or Swamp exploration reduce Stamina regeneration. Rested helps offset those penalties, but it does not remove the effects themselves. In the Mountains, you also need protection against Freezing; a long Rested timer is not a substitute for frost resistance.

A longer timer means fewer interruptions

A short buff can force you to stop during an expedition, find a safe place, build a fire or temporary shelter, and wait to rest again. Higher Comfort reduces how often you need those breaks, whether you are exploring crypts, climbing mountains, or travelling across the sea. That means fewer interruptions to manage your building supplies and find somewhere suitable to recover.

Skill training benefits from staying prepared

On default settings, death costs a percentage of your skill levels. The extra skill XP from Rested helps you train those skills again during hunting and gathering trips, and continue developing them afterwards. It does not prevent the death penalty, so avoiding unnecessary deaths still matters.

Refresh Rested while you are already home storing materials, repairing equipment, or preparing food. Before leaving, check both the buff and its remaining duration. Making this part of your normal departure routine is an easy way to get more value from the home you have built.
