How to Fish: All 49 Fish, Creatures and Lures

Overview

There are 49 creatures to find in How to Fish, including regular catches, minibosses and story bosses. To complete your collection, you must use the correct rod and lure before defeating the creature so it registers in your encyclopedia.

Regular fish are determined by your equipped lure rather than your current island. However, stronger lures only become available as you progress through the game.

Helpful guides and tips for every stage of the game

Early Fish and Lures

The early collection uses the Crab Fishing Rod and Fishing Rod alongside three different lure types.

The Free Lure can catch Brown Crab and Shrimp when used with the Crab Fishing Rod. After unlocking the Fishing Rod, it can also catch Mackerel, Gar, Pike and Goldfish.

The Hot Dog can catch Rock Crab and Lobster with the Crab Fishing Rod. It can also be used with the Fishing Rod to catch Piranha.

The Beginner Lure becomes available on the Forest Island and can catch Piranha, Pike, Cod, Goby, Salmon, Perch, Triggerfish and Goldfish.

Some creatures, including Piranha, Pike and Goldfish, can therefore be caught using more than one lure.

Standard Lure Fish

The Standard Lure costs $15 and becomes available on the Desert Island. It can catch Catfish, Clownfish, Sea Urchin, Yellow Boxfish, Needlefish, Angelfish, Bluegill, Seahorse and Bowlfish.

The Seahorse can also be used as the endangered creature required for the Tourist’s quest.

Professional Lure Fish

The Professional Lure costs $50 and is first sold on the Rocks Island. It can catch Bass, Eel, Red Snapper, Sengarat, Halibut, Tigerfish, Flying Fish, Voxelfish, Parrotfish and Dripper.

This is the largest regular lure pool in the game, so you may need to use several Professional Lures before finding every creature.

Scientific Lure Fish

The Scientific Lure costs $500 and becomes available on the Volcano Island. It can catch Blobfish, Oarfish, Anglerfish, Stonefish and Superdwarf Fish.

These are the final five regular creatures added to your collection before accounting for bosses and Drip variants.

All Boss Lures and Special Bait

Bosses and minibosses require a Boss Lure or special quest item. Unlike regular fish, they must also be summoned at the correct location.

The purchasable Boss Lures catch the following creatures:

  • Beginner Boss Lure: Sunfish and The Old Pike on the Forest Island
  • Standard Boss Lure: Blue Shark on the Desert Island
  • Professional Boss Lure: Tuna on the Rocks Island
  • Scientific Boss Lure: Goblin Shark on the Volcano Island

The story bosses use special bait obtained through quests or earlier encounters:

  • Spider Crab: Empty Beer Can
  • Giant Piranha: Modified Leech
  • Pufferfish: Carrot
  • Albatross: Tuna
  • Bowhead Whale: Fish Bucket
  • Mutated Bowhead Whale: Bowhead Whale

How to Find Drip Creatures

Every creature also has a rare Drip version. Drip creatures use the same lure, rod or special trigger as the normal version, so you do not need a separate Drip Lure.

Continue using the correct lure until the Drip version appears, then defeat it to add it to your encyclopedia. The Tab menu tracks all 49 regular and 49 Drip creatures separately.

Drip creatures can also be placed into the Reel of Fortune to unlock weapon and equipment skins. Check out our full weapon-camo guide for more information.
