Build Overview

The Death Trap Rogue Build Guide teaches you about Gear, Skills, Paragon, Playstyle & Seasonal Mechanics in Diablo 4.

Death Trap is a versatile skill that pulls in enemies and deals great damage. It is one of the contenders for being the fastest build in the entire game. Zooming through all content the game and any challenge has to offer at unmatched speeds is exactly what this Death Trap Rogue build is all about. In Season 14, Death Trap gearing is now easier than in Season 13, due to the Unique item overhaul.

With enough gear and optimization you can permanently teleport around with Artifice Shadow Step

This build can run Pit Tier 100 in 1minute and T12 Lair Bosses in < 3s when properly optimized.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Insane Mobility
  • Incredible AoE
  • Easy to Play
  • Difficult to gear
  • Glass Cannon
  • All sorts of Breakpoints

Build Variants

This DPS variant is the hardest to gear. You can infinitely cast Artifice Shadow Step for maximum Mobility & reach the 10 Frames AS Breakpoint for higher DPS.

Death Trap Rogue is incredibly reliant on specific gear and breakpoints.

The required breakpoints are:

  1. Equal or less than 15 seconds Death Trap Cooldown
    • That requires:
    • Greater Affix Cooldown Reduction on as many pieces as possible (e.g. Helmet, Gloves, Rings, and Amulet), and Greater Affix Cooldown Tempers on your Rings and Amulet.
    • If you have Seal of the Diamond Mind and run Berú of Applied Alchemy, you can even get away with 16 seconds Death Trap Cooldown.
  2. Equal or more than 225 Maximum Energy
    1. Get +Maximum Resource on your Chest and 2-3 Charms, supplement on Amulet if required.
    2. Sea Lord's Fine Gloves multiplies your Energy by up to 30%.
    3. So with at least 173 Energy in town, you get 173 * 1.3 = 224.9 Energy which is perfectly fine.
  3. Aspect of Aftermath to be able to consistently restore at least 225 Energy
    • To do that, you need 40 Ranks of Death Trap with a min-rolled Aspect of Aftermath or 25 Ranks with a max-rolled one.
    • If you can not even reach 25 Ranks, consider putting Aspect of Aftermath on your Amulet.
  4. Trap Arm time Reduction tempered on your Gloves and Spring-Loaded Node on Deadly Ambush.

The Attack Speed Breakpoints for this variant are different.

  • Attack Speed Breakpoint: >88% (10 Frames) with 1 Dagger & 1 Sword.
    1. Ferocity (+20%) gives +5% AS per stack and caps at 4 stacks.
    2. Ferocity Concealment gives you 2 stacks per cast, so you want +68% AS from Gear and Paragon. Concealment's Cooldown is reset after using Death Trap withFer of the Sightless.
    3. You get +5% Attack Speed from Nodes on No Witnesses, leaving 63% from Gear.
  1. To solve it, you need:
    1. Attack Speed on your Saboteur's Signet (10% min-roll)
    2. GA Attack Speed on Aspect of Aftermath Ring & Sea Lord's Fine Gloves (+15% x 2 = 30%)
    3. GA Attack Speed Temper on your 2-H Weapon (+12%) and
    4. Two Attack Speed GA Tempers on your 1-H Weapons (+12% total)
    5. Resulting in 20% + 5% + 15% + 15% + 10% + 12% + 12% = 89%
  2. With a max-rolled Asheara's Khanjar instead of Rustbitten Dirk, you need 1 GA AS roll less.
  3. To avoid wasting Attack Speed, you can calculate the Breakpoints for your skills using THIS SHEET.

Must Have Breakpoints:

  2. Equal or more than 225 Maximum Energy
    1. You can get +Maximum Resource on Helm, Chest, Amulet and Charms.
    2. Sea Lord's Fine Gloves allows you to have 25-30% more Energy.
    3. You can reach 225 Energy even without it though.
  • Attack Speed Breakpoint: 88% (10 Frames) with 1 Dagger & 1 Sword.

Aspect of Glynn's Anvil was nerfed, but is still a 40% damage reduction, beating all other defensive options on our Helmet. If you do not mind the occasional Death, you can also opt to run a damage aspect, such as Earthstriker's Aspect or Frostbitten Aspect instead.

Aspect of Inner Calm gives more damage than Aspect of Entrapment and retains all of it's stacks if you only "move" with Shadow Step. Aspect of Inner Calm has been changed in Season 13, so it gradually builds and loses stacks instead of losing all of them after moving even an inch.

Transfigurations to chase:

  • Attack Speed (Might get you another breakpoint or allow to roll it off your rings)
  • Cooldown reduction (can run +%Damage[x] Seal instead)
  • Gem Strength on weapons (just raw damage increase)
  • Kullean Transfiguration on Amulet:
    • Aspect of Mending Obscurity (defense), Earthstriker's Aspect, Exploiter's Aspect.

Once you find Seal of the Diamond Mind, you can drop Sea Lord's Fine Gloves. You can easily get 225 Energy without it, due to the Max Resource rolls on your Charms, Scoundrel's Leathers and Beastfall Boots.

Specialization

Your Artifice Shadow Step should have less than 3.25 seconds Cooldown for smooth infinite casts.

Cooldown Shadow Step reduces the Cooldown after it is cast by 3 seconds.

Shadow Step has a cast time of around 21 Frames at 67% Attack Speed, meaning it roughly takes 0.35 seconds to cast. Therefore, to allow wiggle room, less than 3.25 seconds Cooldown is ideal.

Rotation:

  • You cast Dash and Shadow Step for Mobility.
    • Thanks to Artifice Shadow Step, it can be cast without a target.
  • Concealment is used as an infinite source of Unstoppable.
    • If you are expecting to get Crowd Controlled a lot you can spam it.
  • Spam Death Trap for damage.
    • Using Death Trap resets your Concealment Cooldown thanks to Berú of the Sightless.
  • Press Dark Shroud whenever it is off Cooldown to always maintain 5 stacks of it.
  • Throw Smoke Grenade to gain Critical Strike Chance.
  • Use Cold Imbuement to gain Barrier with the Buffered Battery Cold Imbuement whenever you hit enemies with Dash or Shadow Step.

You want to use Raheir and his Bastion ability. This allows you to survive an otherwise fatal blow and increase your damage while standing inside it.

Varyana is there to provide more sources of Knockdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cooldown & Energy

This build revolves around one goal: 100% uptime on Death Trap, so you can infinitely cast it. To make this work, there are four non-negotiable breakpoints you need to hit:

  • The Cooldown: You must reduce your Death Trap cooldown to 15 seconds or less through gear and tempering.
  • The Energy Bank: You need a maximum energy level of at least 225.
  • The Restoration: You need to be able to restore 225 energy back immediately.
  • The Reduction: You need Trap Arm Time Reduction

Why 225 Energy? Because we use the Preparation Specialization alongside Beastfall Boots to fully reset that cooldown the moment we spend our energy.

Cooldown Reduction:

Greater Affix Cooldown Reduction on as many pieces as possible (e.g. Helmet, Gloves, Rings, and Amulet), and Greater Affix Cooldown Tempers on your Rings and Amulet. There is also Trap Cooldown Reduction on the Deadly Ambush Paragon Board.

Equal or more than 225 Maximum Energy:

You get this through +Maximum Resource on your Chest, +Maximum Resource on your Charms and, if necessary, the Unique Charm Sea Lord's Fine Gloves, providing you 30% more Energy once fully stacked.

Restoring 225 Energy:

To restore 225 Energy we utilize the Aspect of Aftermath on one of our Rings. To do that, you need 40 Ranks of Death Trap with a min-rolled or 25 Ranks with a max-rolled one. We get an additional 25 Energy restored by Beastfall Boots. Now how do we get that many Ranks of Death Trap? Simple, via Vehement Brawler's Aspect, Charms and our Amulet. Charms can get up to 4 ranks to Trap Skills each and our Amulet can roll Ranks to Trap or Ranks to All Skills. Get as many ranks as necessary to fulfill the requirement.

Trap Arm Time Reduction:

You need to temper it on your Gloves from the offensive category and get it in the Paragon on Deadly Ambush. This is necessary because there can only be a finite amount of Death Traps laid out before they are overwritten, unless they spring before that happens. Meaning, with maximum Trap Arm Time Reduction, they spring in 0.15 seconds.

Leveling

You can not level with this build. I would recommend you level with the Dance of Knives Leveling guide.

Runes

  • CirQue is best in Slot due topping up your Barrier consistently.
  • ZanGar is mandatory to get closer to 100% Critical Hit Chance.

Frequently Asked Questions

I can not spam Death Trap infinitely, what am I doing wrong?

Make sure to:

  • Have your Death Trap below 15 seconds Cooldown.
  • This requires a lot of Cooldown Reduction, Death Trap Skill Ranks and good Tempering rolls and Masterworks.
  • Have means to restore 225 Energy.
  • Actually have 225 Energy in the first place
  • Have Preparation as Specialization equipped.
  • Have Trap Arm Time Reduction on your Gloves and in the Paragaon Board Deadly Ambush.

I feel very squishy, what to do?

  • Eldritch Bounty got bug fixed and now correctly provides +25%[x] all resistance.
  • A good way to get tankier is to upgrade your Gems in your Rings & Amulet.
  • You can also swap Gar for Que and Vex for LAC.
  • Once you have enough Damage for Torment 12, you can equip Pants with the Aspect of Glynn's Anvil with +Maximum Resolve Temper (GA+MW) instead of Eyes in the Dark. This is a significant DPS loss, however, it also provides a ton of DR, but the best method if you really do not want to die.
  • You can also go back to Harlequin Crest instead of Heir of Perdition at a hefty DPS loss.
  • Are there no good ways to boost tankyness without losing so much DPS?
    • To be fair, not really, you can try to go for more defensive affixes on your Charms, prioritize Max-Life, invest more Paragon Points into Armor / All Resist / Max Life, but at the end of the Day, this build relies a lot on good positioning and using your Mobility to move out of harm's way.
    • Once Eldritch Bounty is fixed, it will be much easier.
  • Alternatively, use Endurant Faith as your Unique Charm instead of Sea Lord's Fine Gloves.
    • That requires supplementing more Energy from your Set Charms though.

Where can I get Rustbitten Dirk?

  • Rustbitten Dirk is a random drop from Lair Bosses, so no target farm. You can upgrade white Daggers in the Horadric Cube to Unique. If you do not have white Daggers, use the remove affix recipe on blue or yellow ones until they are white.

I can not find Aspect of Aftermath, what to do?

  • Gamble Rings
  • Check the Bartering Girl for Resource Aspect Caches
  • When using the Upgrade Rare to Legendary Recipe in the Cube you can also optionally add a Resource Tuning Prism to narrow the pool down significantly.

I can not get Shadow Step Cooldown below 3.25 seconds, what can I do?

  • Make sure to get Mobility Cooldown Reduction tempered on your Beastfall Boots. Also, you need the Mobility CDR from Danse Macabre. Further you also require a Cooldown Reduction Seal.
  • All of this, is on top of having Masterworked Greater Affix CDR everywhere.
  • Infinite Step is tricky to gear properly, so make sure you have everything required.

+Trap Ranks vs +Maximum Resource on Charms

  • You need to balance these out so that you restore at least equal to the amount of Maximum Energy you have. There is no point in having more Maximum Energy if you can not restore it with every cast.
