Build Overview

Thorns is making a come back for the Barbarian in Season 9. This build guide will set you up for success and have monsters killing themselves just by touching you.

You'll rely on big Maximum Life, to add to your Outburst passive that will give you high Thorns damage and your new Horadric Spell to dominate in the endgame. This build is easy to put together, requires very little to get started and the addition of a couple Mythich Uniques just makes it that much better.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Very tanky
  • Easy to play
  • Low Gear Requirements

  • How it Plays

    Thorns Rotation

    • Cast Wrath of the Berserker to give you increased damage and pull enemies to you.
    • Cast Challenging Shout, Rallying Cry and Warcry to increase your defenses, Maximum Life and Maximum Thorns.
    • Cast Frenzy to start gaining Damage Reduction. Frenzy is not used as a damage source.
    • Use Ground Stomp to reset the cooldown of Wrath of the Berserker so you can maintain Unstoppable and Berserking, while continuing to pull enemies to you.
    • Repeat

    How it Works

    Thorns Damage

This build will be running on a Dual Wield set up. You will need to have one Sword and one Mace in order to take advantage of Wallop.

    Offense

    • Aspect of Earthquakes is how your Ground Stomp generates Earthquakes. It also increased your damage while standing in an Earthquake and for 5 seconds after you leave it.
    • Ground Stomp will cast an Earthquake on use due to the Aspect of Earthquakes.
    • Inner Calm gives us increasing damage the longer we stand still reaching maximum bonus after standing still for 3 seconds. Since we have to stand still for our Runes to create Earthquakes this is the perfect Aspect to add in extra damage.
    • Vehement Brawler Aspect gives you damage whenever you Cast your ultimate skill.
    • Exploiter's Aspect will give you additional damage when monsters become Unstoppable. We'll be using ground stop to cast Stun this will eventually lead to that Unstoppable state for extra damage.
    • Aspect of Elements gives you seven on and seven seconds off of increased damage.
    • Needleflare Aspect gives you a chance to have your Thorns damage delt to enemies around you.

    Uniques

    • *Razerplate ** takes any direct damage you do (no damage over time like *Bleeds) and converts it to Fire Damage then it takes that Fire Damage and multiplies it by up to 100%. This is big big damage.

    Mythic Uniques

    • Harlequin's Crest will give you a huge reduction in your cooldowns, as well as additional Damage Reduction and Armor
    • Doombringer adds a massive source of Maximum Life which contributes to the Outburst passive increasing the amount of Thorns you have.

    Earthquake Rune Setup

If you have Bac you will just need to run into groups of monsters and spawn earthquakes around them. You can use Leap and Groundstomp to generate more Earthquakes but also do not use them all at once if you're running lower on Fury or if there are not a lot of monsters around. Use Whirlwind only once you've gotten into a pack of monsters. You generate Fury by critically striking monsters using the Wrath glyph in the paragon board. This is how you maintain Fury with the build. You only need to tap Whirlwind once every second to activate the Gar rune. Any more than that isn't exactly necessary.

If you are running the Igni Rune, then you will want to TAP the Whirlwind button, not press and hold it. Igni gives you offerings when you cast a Skill. If you hold down and channel Whirlwind you are not casting a skill.

    Rune Combinations
Tec + Bac Open world, Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes.
    Tec + Igni Pit Farming
Tec + Poc If you don't have the two Runes above.
Tec + Lith + Frenzy Infernal Hordes and Boss Runs
