Specializations is a post game progression system in that is unlocked after you complete the campaign. It's reminiscent of the former "Badass Ranks", and gives players an additional way to further improve their characters.
It comes in the form of a skill tree, but with its own separate experience bar that can progress through hundreds of level-ups; ultimately aimed to encourage more build creativity.
Let's dive in deeper to explore how it works!
How Do Specializations Work?
There are four different Basic Nodes you can invest into on the Specialization tree. Each one provides very straightforward stats that are generically useful across the board.
Survivor - Max Health & Shields
Brute - Increased Gun Damage
Sharpshooter - Increased Reload Speed & Accuracy
Runner - Increased Movement Speed & Melee Damage
Progressing far enough along the skill tree will eventually allow you to unlock Specialization skills. These can be socketed to provide unique bonuses which empower your character.
As you can see on the left side of the image, there are a total of four sockets available. Initially, you'll only begin with one, but you'll unlock more as you continue progressing.
Prestige Nodes
In addition to the four Basic Nodes, there are also three Prestige Nodes which can be unlocked. These require you to have invested in the two corresponding Basic Nodes, far enough to where they eventually meet in the middle.
Gadgeteer - Increased Ordnance Cooldown Rate
Killer - Increased Critical Hit Damage & Status Effect Damage
Daredevil - Increased Action Skill Cooldown Rate
Is It Possible To Respec?
Players will have the ability to respec their Specialization points in exchange for Eridium, which can be done using a specific machine (displayed above).
The developers mentioned that they want to encourage players to focus on a particular build, but will still allow the possibility as long as they're willing to trade some resources.
What About Additional Characters?
Once you've completed the campaign and unlocked Specializations, the feature will be permanently available account-wide. This means you'll be able to equip powerful endgame skills on new characters, and continue earning experience no matter who you play.
However, Specializations are by no means enforced, so if you'd rather start from scratch to make things more challenging, you can simply opt out of using your points/skills.
