Overview

Borderlands 4 is launching with a ton of content to explore, but on top of that, we've been given a sneak peek into the future upcoming months of the game.

While a good chunk of the content comes in the form of DLC, there will be several free updates that everyone can enjoy with just the base game alone.

While diving deeper into each type of content, we'll be sure note the free updates from the DLC ones.

Also keep in mind that the DLC can be purchased separately, and does not require you to have purchased the Deluxe or Super Deluxe Editions of the game.

Weekly Mayhem

Availability: Free

Weekly events will become a regular part of gameplay, bringing various challenges for players to take on and earn great rewards.

The Big Encore Boss can be fought by spending Eridium at Moxxi's Big Encore Machine, and Wildcard Missions are excellent since they provide a guaranteed Legendary drop. You can also repeatedly farm this mission until you acquire the affixes you desire.

Maurice's Black Market Machine is a vendor for Legendary loot, as long as you've got the in-game cash. Each week it will spawn in a random location (same for all players), but the items provided will vary between players, meaning you're free to join others' games to broaden your available purchases!

Seasonal Mini-Events

Availability: Free

Seasonal Mini-Events will bring fun and thematic limited-time experiences to the game. The first upcoming event is titled "Horrors of Kairos".

Since this event is right around the corner from launch, the devs have mentioned it will feature only minor gameplay tweaks, alongside new Legendaries, cosmetics, weather, and spooky vibes!

Bounty Packs

Availability: DLC - Deluxe Edition

Bounty Packs are the first available DLC (four total in the bundle), providing smaller "bite-sized" narrative content. They will feature a new boss, missions, Legendary gear, cosmetics, and the Vault Card.

The first Bounty Pack will be focused on Rush, the leader of the Outbounders faction.

Vault Cards give players access to 24 unique cosmetic items, plus four separate pieces of re-rollable gear. Vault Card holders also acquire more loot and XP via Daily/Weekly challenges.

These are aimed to be built around a specific theme and can be leveled up at your own leisure. So don't worry, unlike some of the free content, Vault Cards don't expire.

Invincible Bosses

Availability: Free

Contrary to their name, Invincible Bosses aren't actually invincible, but they will definitely be tough! These high level boss variants will have massive health pools, powerful attacks, various modifiers, and even showcase new mechanics.

The first of these is expected in Q4 2025, and those who can defeat it will have the chance to acquire some of the best loot in the game.

Pearlescent Loot

Availability: Free

Pearlescent loot will be returning to Borderlands 4 in Q1 2026. While we don't know many details thus far, we do know it won't be easy to obtain.

In whatever location/fashion it can be found, it's stated to have a less than 1% drop rate.

New Main Story Missions & Vault Hunters

Availability: DLC - Super Deluxe Edition

Probably the most exciting of the bunch is the brand new Main Story and Vault Hunters. We don't have much insight just yet, but the first pack is titled "Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned".

As teased by the devs, we can also expect the second Story Pack to feature additional familiar faces.
