Our Top 5 Tips to Play Against Ezreal in Season 14
Ezreal is a fan-favourite ADC and one of the most popular ADCs in the current meta. He is the go-to-carry for many players who play this role, and even those who don’t play this role tend to pick him too. Due to his popularity, you must learn how to play against him to improve your chances of coming out ahead.
In this Mobalytics guide, we will break down some tips and tricks to help you counter Ezreal and reduce his chances of coming out ahead. Stay updated with the latest League of Legends news, with articles, how-to guides and information to help you climb, which can all be found on the Mobalytics Blog.
1. Choose a Counter Pick
Ezreal struggles against champions with burst, a solid early game or a strong all-in. If you see that the enemy has picked Ezreal, try to pick someone with one of those characteristics to make laning against him easier.
Ezreal’s power spike traditionally comes later in the game, leaving him vulnerable in the early stages. By choosing a champion with a strong early game, you can exploit this weakness and set him back, giving your team a crucial advantage.
Nilah
Nilah has strong all-in and can close the gap easily on him. Post 6, she can all-in him easily with her Ultimate. Furthermore, she is great in team fights, and much stronger than Ezreal in team fights.

Yasuo
Has strong all-in and can close the gap and quickly get on to Ezreal with his E. Post 6, as long as Yasuo lands his Tornado, he will win the fight with Ezreal.

Twitch
Twitch is another strong all-in champion with his E. During the laning phase, Ezreal wants to just poke and if he does go for an extended trade, then Twitch wins them with his E and Passive.

2. Avoid Playing Hook Champs
Your best bet is to avoid picking champions with hooks or pull abilities, such as Blitzcrank or Thresh, as Ezreal can easily dodge them with his E. Instead, you should pick champions with point-and-click CC abilities or champions with fewer skill shots than normal. Champions who can be good picks include Sona, Karma and Senna.
If you’ve had the unfortunate nature of picking Thresh or Blitzcrank and the enemy locks in Ezreal, here are some tips you can use to make dealing with him a little easier:
- Bait out his E before looking for the hook
This makes it harder for him to dodge your ability as he cannot easily use your E to escape the damage. You can bait this out by walking up and making it look like you will throw out your ability without doing so
- Focus on roaming
If you’re not able to get kills in your own lane, you should look to roam around the map and help your allies out. Here’s an in-depth roaming guide we’ve created that will break down how to roam, when to roam, and how to do it, so you’re guaranteed to come out ahead.
- Abuse his cooldowns
Ezreal may use his E recklessly to dodge skill shots from your ADC. When he does this, look for a hook and try to catch him out of position. When his E is on cooldown, he is vulnerable.
- Look for hooks from out of vision (inside bushes)
Use the element of surprise to make landing hooks easier. If Ezreal doesn’t know you’re in a bush, then his chances of reacting with his E are way lower!
- Get as close to him as possible
If you can, try to get close to Ezreal to make it easier for you to land this skill shot. The further you’re away from a target, the more time they get to react to it.
It’s also more challenging to land skill shots from a distance. Being close to your target increases your chances of landing skill shots.
3. Stand Behind Minions
Ezreal will try to harass you as much as he can with his Q during the laning phase. Ensure that you’re always stood behind at least one minion at all times so the minion can block the damage for you.
If Ezreal can land a few Qs on you during the laning phase, it could allow him to look for an all-in later on during the laning phase. If you are low on HP, it could also allow his Jungler to gank you and set you behind.
Try your absolute hardest to continually adjust your positioning so you’re always behind a minion. Stand as far away from him too to make dodging his Q’s a bit easier as well.
4. Ping Once Ezreal Hits Level 6
This tip may seem somewhat redundant, but I’ve seen it happen way too many times, and at the end of the day, it’s better to be safe rather than sorry. Ezreal’s Ultimate is global, which means that it has no range and it will travel across the map before leaving Summoners Rift.
Because of this, Ezreal’s map pressure increases once he unlocks his Ultimate. He can use it to hit your allies from across the map.
Whenever Ezreal hits level 6, communicate with your team so they know that he has his Ultimate and that he may use it to snipe them. Spam ping that hs is level 6 or ping his Ultimate.
If Ezreal launches his Ultimate across the map, ping as much as you can. Ping the path it will take so your allies know what’s headed their way.
While slightly off-topic, whenever the enemy has a global or semi-global Ultimate like Soraka, Twisted Fate, or Shen, you should always ping that they’ve hit level 6 as your team needs to know that they could potentially impact a fight.
5. Abuse His Weak Early Game
While Ezreal is one of the most popular champions, and why he can be good in the laning phase and outside of the laning phase, the reality is that he is one of the weaker early-game champions. If you can set him behind and not let him get ahead, he will be weak for some time.
There are a few things you can do to gain an early lead:
Hit level two first
- When you’re playing with a strong Support who has good all-in, you should look for an aggressive play to gain an early health lead. Get level 2 first (which is the first full wave followed by three melee minions on the second wave) and then look for an all-in. If you can force him to blow through his sustain in the early levels, you’ll be able to kill him later on.
Jump on him when he overextends
- Some champions have very strong all-in such as Tristana who can jump on Ezreal once he overextends. If Ezreal pushes the minion wave, wait for him to walk forward and then look to chase him down the lane while he is overextended. Many other champions can do this such as Lucian, Vayne and Samira.
Go for extended trades
- Going for extended trades is going to be your go-to method to beating Ezreal in lane. When you trade with him, try to go for long trades as you’ll usually come out ahead of them. Ezreal wants to poke and harass with his Q, and while he does auto-attack- he’ll be looking for those Qs for the most part.
- Try your hardest to land as many auto attacks on him in quick succession to gain a health lead. If you just land one auto here or there, he will be able to out trade you in the long run thanks to the poke from his Qs.
In Conclusion
Learning how to counter every single champion in League of Legends is very important. You must learn how to beat all the new champions, and the old ones too. We hope these tips will help you the next time you’re facing off against an Ezreal in LoL!
