Path of Building Code

Build Overview

this is a LEVELING GUIDE for any Marauder Ascendancy (Berserker, Juggernaut or Chieftain)
you can also easily follow this guide as a Duelist

if you are looking for an endgame build, check out my Earthshatter Juggernaut:
https://mobalytics.gg/poe/builds/woolie-earthshatter-juggernaut

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunder is BY FAR the best melee leveling skill due to its high base damage and great AoE coverage, starting as soon as you get it at level 12.

this guide breaks down the ENTIRE leveling process by separating each Act into its own Build Variant
I've also included some Early Endgame Variants to point you in the right direction, post-Campaign

IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER, refer to the descriptions at the bottom of each section ("Equipment", "Passive Tree", "Skills") for all of the relevant info you'll need!

also, check out these videos for a TON of basic PoE info:

if you have any questions, stop by my stream and I'd be glad to help!

SKILL ROTATION

for both clearing and single target, remember to constantly use your mana flask! it's also not a bad idea to stay at a "lower tier" mana flask for the entire campaign, like a Greater Mana Flask or Grand Mana Flask, given how much mana you spend per attack vs your entire pool

also, always pop Blood Rage at the start of every zone and refresh it every 5-10s, to ensure it's always active (even on bosses!)

CLEARING

  1. Leap Slam / Frostblink OVER monster packs
you can "cancel" the end of Leap Slam's animation by using Frostblink before you land
  2. Sunder
if you Leap Slam correctly, the monsters will have basically created a straight line to chase you, giving Sunder much better coverage!

SINGLE TARGET

  1. Vulnerability
  2. Intimidating Cry (if available)
  3. spam Sunder

remember to refresh Vulnerability, if necessary

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Beginner-Friendly
  • Good damage, clearspeed AND survivability
  • Transitions into endgame builds VERY easily
  • damage is entirely dependent on your weapon (can fall off, if no upgrade for a while)

Build Variants

use Ground Slam until you acquire Sunder (level 12 - Merveil's Cavern)

Equipment

Stone Axe
Two-Stone Ring (Cold/Lightning)
Iron Gauntlets
Iron Hat
Plate Vest
Leather Belt
Turquoise Amulet
Two-Stone Ring (Cold/Lightning)
Iron Greaves
Silver Flask
Divine Life Flask
Quicksilver Flask
Granite Flask
Basalt Flask

your weapon is BY FAR your most-important piece of gear - refer to the base type I include above for the "best" one available to you, at each point.

for the rest of the gear shown above, SIMPLY LOOK AT THEIR STATS - the base types are irrelevant (you gotta work with whatever you get!)

UPGRADING YOUR GEAR

at any point in a run, gambling for items (using gold) is the simplest and best option for acquiring easy upgrades. each Act's town has a different NPC for gambling - simply click on each of them until you see "Gamble for Items" as an option.

-- WEAPON --

ACTS 1-3
If you need a better weapon, you have two options:

  1. Simply use any Essence (dropped by the "crystallized" monsters) or Alchemy Orb on any common 2h axe.
This will upgrade it to rare and roll it with random stats (aside from the essence mod)
I RECOMMEND YOU USE THIS METHOD
  2. Go to a vendor and sell these things ALL TOGETHER:
    • the best 2H axe basetype available (buy from your current Act's vendor; rarity doesn't matter)
    • a magic or rare Rustic Sash (a rare one will give you a better weapon!)
    • a single Blacksmith's Whetstone

This gives you an axe with a guaranteed "% increased physical damage" roll of up to 64% (based on the rarity of the Rustic Sash you used).

ACTS 4-10

  • Buy the best 2H axe available to you (from your current Act's vendor; you're looking for high base damage, not necessarily attack speed)
  • Use an Orb of Scouring on it (only if it's not already common-rarity)
  • Apply an Essence, an Orb of Alchemy, or an Orb of Binding on it, hoping for decent "physical damage" stats (both % AND +) with some attack speed.
  • If you hit something decent, use as many Blacksmith's Whetstones as necessary (1–4) to reach 20% quality.

If you landed only ONE of "% increased physical damage" OR "adds x to x physical damage" but you ALSO landed "increased attack speed", take the axe into your hideout's Crafting Bench (talk to Helena in Act 2, if you don't have a hideout) and craft whichever "phys" stat is missing, if possible (hold the "alt" key while hovering over an item to see its affixes - the max is 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes)

DO NOT SPEND YOUR CHAOS ORBS ON THIS CRAFT! CHOOSE A LOWER TIER (should cost Alteration or Transmutation orbs)

-- ARMOR & JEWELRY --

  • You're simply looking for as much LIFE and RESISTANCES as possible.
  • Look to equip "armor" or "armor/evasion" basetypes, as they have the highest chance at the correct-color sockets.

Again, remember to utilize your CRAFTING BENCH to fill one empty affix slot on an item!

  • After killing Hillock (the big zombie), take Ground Slam as your reward.
Link Ruthless Support to it and drop Heavy Strike
  • Look out for a 3-linked (3L) item with 2 Red & 1 Green socket (2R, 1G).
  • After Mercy Mission quest (Tidal Island zone):
Choose Chance to Bleed Support as your reward. Link it to Ground Slam
At this point, if you still do not have a 3L (3R), replace Ruthless Support until a 3L drops.
  • After Breaking Some Eggs quest (Mud Flats zone), buy these gems from Nessa:
Frostblink > KEEP THIS AT LEVEL 1! DO NOT EVER LEVEL IT UP!
You can right-click its level-up icon to move it into your inventory and get it off your gameplay screen.
Blood and Sand > toggle on and ALWAYS STAY IN BLOOD STANCE!
Once activated, you can toggle the skill to switch between the two stances.
War Banner > activate whenever you need damage
  • After The Caged Brute quest, take Leap Slam as a reward and BUY the rest from Nessa:
    Enduring Cry
    Faster Attacks Support
    Intimidating Cry
    Lifetap Support
If you don't have enough currency to grab all of these gems at once, don't worry - just keep coming back & buying them occasionally.
  • Once you arrive in Merveil's Caverns, IMMEDIATELY grab the waypoint and go back to town to acquire Sunder (replace Ground Slam with it)

At the end of Act 1, your overall gems should look like this:
Sunder > Chance to Bleed Support, Ruthless Support
War Banner (only press when you need damage)
Intimidating Cry (only press when you need damage)
Enduring Cry (only press if you're dying)
Blood and Sand (toggle on and STAY IN BLOOD STANCE!)
Leap Slam > Faster Attacks Support
Frostblink (KEEP AT LEVEL 1! right click its "+" icon to remove it from your gameplay screen.)
