How to Find Olroth, Origin of the Fall

Guide is written by FearlessDumb0

Olroth is the Expedition pinnacle boss. He can only be found by running Expedition Logbooks of item level 79 or 80.

Logbooks themselves can be found by running Expedition content in your waystones or by purchasing them off of trade.

To run a Logbook speak with Dannig in your hideout. He will offer the option to open the Expedition in one of two layouts if you drop the logbook into the Show Expedition Map window.

Either map will work, there is no bias for Olroth towards a given layout.

When you open the Expedition you will see an overlay that shows many Expedition Remnants, Chests, Monster Markers, and environmental mobs. There is a roughly 1 in 8 chance to find Olroth in a given Logbook of level 79 or higher. This is not a precise number yet given the modest sample size the community has.

If your logbook layout has Olroth you will see a skull with blue eyes on the map. You will need to path to it and blow it up to start the encounter. Take care on some of the tropical layouts as the Skull is a bit harder to see than on the more gray palette layouts.

IMPORTANT: For the second and higher tiers of this pinnacle boss the Remnants you choose leading up to Olroth are important as they WILL affect the Skeleton adds that spawn during the boss encounter. Olroth himself doesn’t appear affected by remnants however. I tested this by allocating a guarantee to poison remnant and confirmed the Skeletons were able to poison me but Olroth was not.

The box where this skull is in the logbook when blown up will uncover an entrance to a Kalguuran Tomb.

Running the Encounter

Once inside the tomb you will find an open area with a bridge taking you to Olroth. The fight won’t start until you enter the final area where Olroth is hunched over.

poe 2 olroth tips

Things to know before you enter

  1. Bring a Freeze Charm and capped Cold Resistance as Olroth primarily deals Cold and Physical damage.
  2. There are two important things to keep an eye on in this fight. The first is Olroth, and the second is the Triskelion Flame (the galaxy shaped disc) that rotates around the arena. Some of the more devastating attacks originate from the Triskelion Flame and will only be telegraphed there.
  3. The best strategy for staying alive is rotating around the arena following the Triskelion Flame while dodging Olroth’s attacks. This way you are constantly moving and also able to keep an eye on the flame.
  4. In the first tier of the fight there will be no adds, however in higher tiers one or both phases will have Skeletons that will pop out of mirrors on the edge of the arena. These skeletons will have whatever remnants the expedition had, so make sure they are manageable. If you can clear the skeletons quickly they provide a nice opportunity for sustain for builds that use mana on kill, life on kill, or Grim Feast.
  5. As of patch 0.1.1, this fight allows multiple chances if you die on lower tiers. This means if you fail you will be given multiple additional attempts without losing access to the fight at Tier 0, all the way up to only one chance at Tier 4. If you fail and restart you lose all progress on the fight and Olroth will fully heal.

Pre-Damage Phase

Olroth only performs a couple basic sword attacks before he takes damage. If your build needs a damage ramp or long skill rotation this is a great time to do it while he is minimally active.

Auto-Attack

This is a very basic single sword swipe that is easy to dodge. He has a few different animations for it but they all are similarly straight-forward.

Chilling Slam

Olroth will rotate his sword up in the air and briefly pause before slamming it down. This attack deals primarily cold damage and can freeze you. It’s easy to see coming; make sure you give his sword distance before it slams down.

Wherever this attack lands a pulsing frost-bomb like ground effect will remain, continuing to deal cold damage on pulse and chilling you if you walk through it. This ground effect lasts for about 15 seconds before evaporating.

Phase 1

Starfall Boomerang

Olroth will glow red briefly before winding up and slinging his sword towards you and off screen. Shortly after the sword will boomerang back, dealing a large amount of Cold AoE damage when he catches it.

As soon as you see him wind this up make sure you strafe laterally and stay out of the way. Being hit by the sword in flight will apply Hinder to you, and being anywhere near Olroth when the sword returns will likely mean being Frozen.

This is probably the most dangerous attack he has as it deals significant cold damage and has the potential to lock you down while you thaw.

Impale

Olroth will raise his sword and a large beam of light will erupt indicating where he is about to charge. This is a pretty basic attack and easy to side-step.

Triskelion Beam

The rotating Triskelion Flame will power up and target your location with a small beam that deals cold damage and will follow you around the arena.

Only the small spherical area on the ground will actually damage you; the beam itself is perfectly safe to walk through if you need to. This skill only lasts for about 5 seconds.

Starfall Carousel

The Triskelion Flame will begin to draw in white lines of energy, indicating it will soon target you and create a rotating series of beams that encircle you and tighten down towards the center before rotating out again. If you touch one of the beams it will deal a small amount of cold damage and chill you. This isn’t a problem if you only touch one, however it is important that you get out as getting repeatedly tagged by all of them adds up very quickly.

Frigid Flurry

Olroth will wind up and let loose a series of cold blasts of energy in groups of three. Keeping distance from Olroth and strafing the edge of the arena makes this an easy attack to avoid or minimally take damage. His first two groups of blasts will come quickly, followed by a brief pause and a third which usually requires a dodge-roll.

Triskelion Bolt

Periodically on tiers above 0 the Triskelion Flame will shoot slow moving projectiles that explode in an AoE when connecting with the arena where you are standing. Keep moving and keep an eye on the Flame to know when you’ll need to dodge these.

Summon Reinforcements

In tier two and higher Olroth will have portals on the edge of the arena. Depending on which tier of Olroth you are facing, you’ll have adds pop out of varying types.

These mobs DO have expedition remnant modifiers on them, so if you have a lengthy chain that buffs the monsters or makes them immune to your damage it can dramatically increase the difficulty of the fight. On the other hand, most builds have some amount of recovery on kill which can make the fight quite a bit easier.

Phase 2

Once you’ve “killed” Olroth, he will regenerate about 2/3rds of his health and start Phase Two. For the most part this only involves more frequent attacks and a couple new abilities.

If you are on earlier tiers of the fight the Skeleton adds will stop popping into the arena. For the highest two tiers of the fight the Skeleton adds will be present for the entire fight.

Triskelion Beam

This is a powerful beam that will cut the arena in two wherever you are. If you position yourself off to the side it can make dealing with this a bit easier as you give yourself a bit more room to move around. Crossing the beam even dodge-rolling will inflict cold damage over time and Olroth will continue to attack you while the ground degen is active.

Ice Tempests

The Triskelion’s Flame will shoot slow moving projectiles that when they hit the arena will form long lasting ice formations with swirling cold energy around them.

These only last a few seconds but can produce a healthy chill on you; be sure to keep your distance. The Ice Tempests tend to come in sets of three, though that’s not always a rule.

Loot Drops

Some drops limited to certain tier difficulties:

  • Keeper of the Arc
  • Olrovasara
  • Svalinn
  • Heroic Tragedy
  • Olroth's Resolve
