Build Overview

SUMMARY:

This build is my league starter of choice for 0.5, "Return of the Ancients," now including early-endgame and mid-endgame variants. Seeing as it features one of the newly released ascendancies this league, playtesting in advance is somewhat limited, so please keep that in mind. The guide will continue to be updated as new information becomes available that enhances the build in some way.

This particular Twister variant puts the primary skill front and center, with with the Spirit Walker ascendancy offering major benefits through Primal Bounty and The Mhacha's Gift, giving Twister a huge boost to damage and clearspeed.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • High ceiling for mobility scaling through weapon swap tech
  • Easy mapping with multi-screen-wide freeze and clear
  • Extremely strong in arena zones like Ritual as well as several other mechanics
  • Budget-friendly gearing with a roadmap into high-budget status
  • Multi-button rotation required for optimal performance
  • Unique-heavy gearing endgame progression
  • Highly-gear dependent for scaling damage
  • Features several key transitions

Build Variants

This build variant is specific to Act One progression. It introduces Whirling Slash with Twister, alongside the Fangs of Frost + Parry interaction as a means to create elemental ground for longer fights. It also introduces weapon set point allocation in the passive tree, initially used for improved mobility in Werewolf form with a Talisman weapon swap.

CRAFTING GUIDE:

An all-encompassing crafting guide for this build can be found here.

WEAPON SETS:

To assign a weapon to a specific weapon set, open the character gear window, and toggle between weapon one and two.

VERY IMPORTANT: once acquired, the Changeling Talisman goes into weapon set 1, and the Hardwood Spear + Leather Buckler moves into weapon set 2.

STAT PRIORITY:

At the earliest stage of the campaign, gear doesn't matter much. The most important stat is flat damage on the spear, gloves, or rings. Of course, movement speed on boots is great, too. Aside from that, it's maximum life and wherever resistances are offered.

WEAPON SET ASSIGNING:

To assign a skill to a specific weapon set, open the skill window and click the checkbox for the desired weapon set (both are checked by default).

Prior to allocating Dance with Death, all skills will automatically swap between weapons properly and with no delay.

More on how to assign weapons and passives to their preferred weapon set can be found in their respective sections of the guide.

ROTATION:

The core rotation for damage at the beginning is Whirling Slash > Whirling Slash > Whirling Slash > Twister. Once available, Ice-Tipped Arrows and Barrage can be inserted at the front of the rotation as they become usable towards the end of Act One.

While purely optional, on longer fights (boss fights especially), it's optimal to use Parry > Fangs of Frost to force elemental ground for a long duration. This imbues subsequent Twister attacks with more added elemental damage. Several Twister rotations can fit inside this window of opportunity.

Early in the campaign, Pounce is great for getting around, and Shred can be used as a no-cooldown trigger just for entering Werewolf form.

SPIRIT GEMS:

War Banner is the first spirit gem to use. While mostly available on bosses only, this provides a huge damage boost that shouldn't be taken for granted.

OTHER:

Whirling Slash should NOT be leveled up. It remains at level one to reduce the mana cost of the skill as much as possible. This is especially important in the later stages of the game.

WEAPON SETS:

Over the course of the completing the campaign, you will be granted up to 24 passive points that can be split between two weapon sets. These points can be assigned to a specific weapon set using the interface in the top right corner of the passive tree window. These passives are color-coded. Red is weapon set one, and green is weapon set two both in this guide and in-game. As a general rule, follow the passive priority list and utilize the weapon set points as they become available.

This build heavily utilizes these weapon set passive points, and involves several minor respecs. At the earliest stages of the build, prior to allocating Dance with Death, Werewolf skills get automatically designated to weapon set one (with a Talisman equipped), focusing on movement speed. At all points in build progression, Twister gets designated to weapon set two (with a spear equipped), focusing more on damage.

More on how to assign skills and weapons to their preferred weapon set can be found in their respective sections of the guide.

How it Plays

This build plays much like your standard endgame Twister build, but with a few more moving parts, and a lot more damage. Trigger Primal Bounty to sync with Salvo using a single Dodge Roll. Whirling Slash at least three times to max out Whirlwind and move in the direction of Vivid Stampede picking up Shocked Ground along the way. Hard-cast Ice-Tipped Arrows and Barrage to further empower the primary skill. [OPTIONAL] Parry the enemy in advance to make them take 50% more attack damage for a short duration.

How it Works

In the final stages of the build, several skills and abilities scale Twister damage and clear exponentially. Some of these are passive and time-gated. Some of them are actively prepped during that required window of time. With a simple dodge roll and a few seconds in between, Salvo and Primal Bounty load up a high Twister projectile count. Meanwhile, Whirling Slash combined with Vivid Stampede locks in a supercharged elemental Whirlwind. The primary skill is then double empowered via Ice-Tipped Arrows and Barrage and finally released, making for one of the fastest and hardest hitting elemental Twister attacks in the game.
