Thorns is a modifier you can find on your gear. When you take a melee strike you deal your thorns back to the enemy that hit you. If I have 50 thorns damage, and the enemy hits me for 1 or 5000 it doesn't matter, I will do 50 damage back to them. Get hit with a melee strike to deal thorns to the enemy. What's core to enabling thorns is
Crown of the Pale King. This makes ALL hits not just melee do thorns damage. From here you just stack as much thorns damage as possible and you have the basic understanding of thorns. Take damage, proc Barbs / Quill Burst, use attack skill, things die.
Why should you play Chronomancer?
The Rapid River is amazing for recoup builds. One of the major problems with Thorns builds is you need to take damage to deal damage. When combined with
Sacrosanctum we can stack life, energy shield, and recoup to become ultra tanky. This does come at a damage loss as we have to invest heavily into recoup.
On a budget I am clearing waystone 15s with relative ease and it's very hard to die. However, compared to the damage of my Thorns Warbringer this is much lower. TLDR Chronomancer is an extra tanky alternative to the Warbringer playstyle but the tradeoff is decent loss of damage.
