Build Overview

Lexd's Shield Wall + Thunderstorm Oracle Druid for Path of Exile 2: The Last of the Druids

As a Shield Warrior main, I thought it would be fun to see if we could make an effective Shield Druid build, using what we can from their side of the passive skill tree. What came about was a melee + caster hybrid that is strong in both clearing and boss-nuking using lightning spells and shield skills.

Shield Druid Build Summary

Overall the build is strong for clearing using lightning spells like Spark and Thunderstorm alongside Choir of the Storm, but we're also dealing some hefty melee damage through Fortifying Cry, Resonating Shield, and Shield Wall, all of which are also benefitting from spell damage increases thanks to Crown of Eyes.

Survivability and tankiness on this build I would say are also overall in a good spot, though degen effects are a little scary and you want to keep an eye on your Stun Threshold meter during your more intense clears (something that may need some more solving if trying to run a T4 Simulacrum).

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • VERY strong boss-killing damage and stun buildup
  • Tanky, through stats and on the account of being able to clear while Active Blocking and at a range
  • Clearing speed is quite good
  • As before, super budget-friendly
  • Survivability is good, as long as you aren't heavy stunned (degen effects can still be scary though)

Build Variants

This is the endgame version of the build; we renounce bear form completely to become a full-on caster and melee hybrid, using Spark and Thunderstorm to clear groups and Shield Wall and Fortifying Cry to blast down bosses.

We are constantly applying Shock to targets with Thunderstorm, and with our skill tree we are just increasing all damage sources against targets that get caught in them by 40% to 52%. I'm usually casting this skill alongside Spark for ranged clearing and maintaining rage since we have Eternal Rage set to our caster set, and then charging in and killing high-priority targets (e.g. Abyss Rares) with Shield Charge, Fortifying Cry, and Resonating Shield. Most targets are heavy-stunned at this point in one or two Shield Charges, so it feels safe to fight the more dangerous rares up-close with your higher-damaging melee skills. Be sure to use Shield Charge often for the bonus from Practical Magic II, which applies to both our spells and melee damage with this build.

Map bosses are taken down once you have full rage and are able to heavy stun them with Shield Charges, then you re-cast Thunderstorm and hit them with Fortifying Cry and Shield Wall IN THAT ORDER; your storm will likely destroy the wall so you don't want to shout when the wall is already destroyed, and this combo will still work as a potent nuke since the Shield Waves created by Fortifying Cry are banked until you detonate your walls from ANY source.

Pinnacles are mostly the same, though I like to spend more time with Resonating Shield to stack the permanent physical damage debuff we can apply through Uruk's Smelting, which is explained more in the skill gems section of this guide and the video.

Most of how this build plays is listed above, but a few more pointers here: Galvanic Field is optional, but can help with clear when cast before or DURING a Thunderstorm; the effect still applies since it hits the next enemy you apply Shock to.

Gem swaps for bossing:

  • The triggered Lightning Bolt from Choir of the Storm should be socketed with Exploit Weakness and Concussive Spells instead of Spell Cascade and Cooldown Recovery II so that we can loop fully-broken armour with instant-removal on this trigger, which is how we stack up the Uruk's Smelting debuff. We are also able to make bosses easier to heavy stun since they are essentially perma-dazed with Concussive Spells.
  • Thunderstorm should we socketed with Commiserate and Overcharge instead of Overabundance II and Coursing Current. This will make us apply a stronger magnitude of Shock on targets, and we don't have to worry about the reflected Shock from Overcharge since Commiserate will constantly peel it back off of us over the course of the storm's duration.
