Overview

This is a very fun Wyvern build that focuses on maximizing the amount of time you can use Flame Breath without using Primal Hunger which will lower your overall damage due to the loss of the Rage inherent bonuses.

This is not going to be a map blaster or the best build out there. To be honest, Wyvern is probably the worst out of the three Shapeshifts, but Flame Breath is a super cool ability that is somewhat similar to Incinerate before it became a single-target ability. Play this build if you value style over efficiency.

Why Mercenary?

Despite being considered one of the most underpowered ascendancies, Gemling has quite a few things that benefit shapeshifting in general in addition to the Wyvern specifically. First off, since you are using Flame Breath, having Gem Studded will give you 40% Less Movement Speed penalty while you are using Flame Breath, which is very nice for clear speed.

Additionally, Flame Breath is not considered a melee attack, projectile attack, or a spell. This means that we can only use + Levels to Attack Skills on our weapon to scale it's damage. Being Gemling, we can make up for some of that loss in damage with Implanted Gems.

Lastly, Wyvern uses Power Charges with all of its abilities. Normally, you would have to run Cast on Critical or Cast on Elemental Ailment with Profane Ritual to upkeep these Power Charges or use Devour. With Gemling, we get Advanced Thaumaturgy, which when set up correctly, will provide us with sufficient Power Charges to map without worrying about Power Charges.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Flame Breath is badass
  • High Single-Target Capabilities
  • You get to watch the world burn
  • Not the best mapper

General Rules for Armour

The general rule of thumb for your armour is to try to fit at least one line of % of Armour Applies to Elemental Damage. Otherwise, mostly its just about survivability stats.

Helmet

Before you get Constricting Command, just get a helmet with as much survivability stats as possible. High Armour, High Life, High Resists, High Strength.

Body Armour

The Brass Dome just got buffed in 0.4 and it is an EXTREMELY high value Chest Armour. It gives you a ton of Armour that is pretty much impossible to get on a normal chest piece. Until you can get a good chest piece with both high armour and life, this is the go-to.

Gloves

High Flat Damage is always desirable, but this build definitely has survivability issues due to low defenses. I would highly recommend skipping out on flat damage for higher armour and life. If you think you are tanky enough, feel free to invest in flat damage on your gloves.

Additionally, you will want to have high resistances. Attack Speed % is a luxury if you have enough resistances.

Boots

As high movement speed as possible and as high survivability as possible.

Amulet

A rare amulet with Spirit, life, and resistances. Get enough Spirit to put you at 130+ Spirit.

Rings

Much like the gloves, High Flat Damage is always desirable, but don't sacrifice your tankiness for damage. Get high life, high strength, and high resists.

For your second ring, use Polcirkeln. Unfortunately, the way that ailments work in PoE 2 make it really hard to apply certain ailments with attacks that hit for low numbers but attack quickly (that is how Flame Breath works). So we will never be able to freeze enemies to proc Herald of Ice for our clear without Polcirkeln.

Belt

A rare belt with as much survivability as possible. Or a Headhunter.

Jewels

For this part of the build, use the following Unique Jewels:

- Controlled Metamorphosis => Small-Medium Ring

- Heart of the Well is nice but not required. If you choose to use it, prioritize getting % Life on Kill and one line of Gain Extra Lightning or Fire Damage. Cold is fine too, but not as desirable.

If you can't afford a Heart of the Well, use a Rare Jewel with the following stat priority:

1. 2% Life on Kill

2. % Increased Damage While Shapeshifted

3. % Increased Elemental Damage

IMPORTANT

Put Savage Fury as only active on your 2nd Weapon Set. You will still get the effect but it will not take any Spirit away from your main weapon set.

For Flame Breath, you want a lot, but there are only 5 support gem slots, so experiment with what works for you. At this point your damage might not be the highest, so using Mobility is probably not the best idea, but if you feel like you are doing enough damage, Mobility is nice because it allows you to move faster while using Flame Breath. You can also use Efficiency II if you want even longer Flame Breath instead of using Mobility or Rapid Attacks II.

How to Play

Mapping

When Mapping, if you have Power Charges already, from Advanced Thaumaturgy, feel free to start mapping as normal using Flame Breath. Whenever you run out of Rage, hit a couple of enemies with Rend and your Rage will recover quickly due to Eternal Rage. Use Devour in situations where you don't have Power Charges.

Bossing

If you don't have Power Charges, you can wait until Advanced Thaumaturgy gives you a power charge and use it for Flame Breath. If you have 2x Power Charges, use Rend to give yourself the Extra Lightning Damage Buff before you use Flame Breath. You can also use Rend to get combo for Pounce with Ailith's Chimes in order to get Power Charges. You need to stack up 4 combos to get a Power Charge.

Remember to use Thunderstorm to shock and if you need more damage, use Elemental Weakness and Oil Barrage.
