Crossbows are extremely strong, and so is the Gemling Legionnaire ascendancy! This build deals enormous amounts of damage, it's tanky, fast, easy to play, and can clear all content in the game.
Offense
The playstyle in maps for this build is extremely simple, just run through and blast enemies with
Explosive Shot. If anything lives past your initial onslaught, hit them with
Explosive Grenade or just dodge roll past and let your
Mirage Archer get the job done with their own
Explosive Grenade spam!
For bosses,
Cluster Grenade,
Explosive Grenade, and
Mirage Archer (which is also spamming
Explosive Grenade) will blast them to pieces quickly. You can shred their resistances with
Oil Grenade (automated with
Mortar Cannon) for even more boss DPS!
If enemies get too close, you can blind and stun them (or just kill them) with
Flash Grenade.
Defense
This build combines
Morior Invictus and
Constricting Command with campaign bonuses and passive skills to gain a very healthy blend of armour, evasion, and energy shield.
The Gemling Legionnaire's
Virtuous Barrier allows you to reach 3000 HP and 1000 ES. When combined with
Wind Dancer and
Ghost Dance, this is an extremely tanky setup!
Leveling
Use
Permafrost Bolts and
Fragmentation Rounds to freeze and blast bosses and rare monsters in Act 1 and early Act 2. Once you unlock
Explosive Shot in Act 2, switch to it as your primary attack.
Fire
Explosive Grenade and
Flash Grenade to clear packs and blast bosses. You unlock
Cluster Grenade very late in the campaign, and it will obliterate bosses.
Craft
Herald of Ash as your first aura in Act 1. Once you reach Act 3, craft
Mirage Archer as your second aura and socket
Explosive Grenade into it. Turn off
Herald of Ash if you need the spirit to use
Mirage Archer.
Gemling Legionnaire's first ascendancy point is purely defensive, so you can spec into Tactician and use
Supporting Fire instead if you prefer (swapping ascendancies after trials is free, just talk to the nearby NPC). Once you complete the second ascendancy trial, taking
Advanced Thaumaturgy with your second pair of points is good if you have 20% quality on your primary skills, otherwise put your points into
Implanted Gems and wait to take
Advanced Thaumaturgy third.
Gearing
In the campaign, just focus on life, resistances, and flat damage on your armour and rings. Try to maintain a good crossbow with as much damage as possible.
For endgame gearing, you want flat added damage on your rings and gloves, as much damage as possible on your crossbow, and projectile skill levels on both your crossbow and amulet. For defense, you want life, resistances, evasion, and deflection on at least one piece of gear.
The unique helmet
Constricting Command (with a roll of "four fewer enemies") allows you to take advantage of several extremely powerful nodes throughout the tree that would otherwise require you to have five enemies nearby. This also allows you to use Defy II support on your skills to gain lucky damage and trivialize mana.
Gemling Legionnaire
Gemling Legionnaire has several extremely powerful bonuses that make it one of the best ascendancies in the game for a wide range of builds.
Virtuous Barrier grants huge bonuses to life, armour, evasion, and energy shield.
Advanced Thaumaturgy provides extra quality bonuses for all of your skills, including extra projectiles on
Explosive Grenade, faster detonation time on
Cluster Grenade, and extra damage on
Flash Grenade.
Implanted Gems adds +2 gem levels to all of your primary skills
Gem Studded gives immunity to critical strike damage and 40% less movement speed penalty while using skills if you have an equal number of red and green support gems socketed. This is extremely easy to achieve.- The small passives on the left side of the ascendancy tree grant an extra 6% skill gem quality! Anointing
Paragon allows you to bring all skills above 30% quality, which massively reduces the cooldown of all your grenade skills.
