Poisonburst Arrow/Toxic Growth is looking to be one of the strongest builds in 0.4, both in terms of damage and the overall speed of the build. Pathfinder is receiving multiple buffs in this patch.

Make sure to fill out your resist, you want 75% fire/cold/lightning resist. Chaos resist is good, but not mandatory to have 75%, I usually aim for 30-50%.

Do note you will most likely need 1 high attribute roll on your gear (either int or dex) to fill out your attribute requirements - or you sacrifice 2 passive points for Proficiency

Bow: You want the highest DPS weapon you can afford with critical strike chance - Obliterator Bow is the go to base because it has extremely high base damage, but any bow base works - Any elemental damage also works because we're using Plaguefinger
Voltaxic Rift Is an okay starter bow if it's cheap, the downside is the bow has 0 base crit so it'll quickly get replace by a good rare crit bow.

Quiver: Want high crit/crit damage with high flat damage, other good stats are increased damage with bows, atk speed and +2 level to bow skills.

Rings: You just want high flat damage rings, just like with the bow, the element doesn't matter because of Plaguefinger

Gloves: Plaguefinger is by far the best in slot option, makes gearing extremely easy as it allows you to stack elemental damage on rings/bow/quiver and allows you to use strong unique jewels.
These gloves are very strong but not mandatory, you can play this build with pure phys on weapon/rings, it'll just be lower dps. If you don't have these gloves than the ele dmg on your gear does nothing.

Belt: Headhunter is always the best in slot for mapping, but never needed. Just use a regular rare belt with str/resist/life if you can't afford HH

Amulet: The only mandatory stat here is 30 spirit. Besides that crit/+level to proj is always good for damage. Global defense/increased energy shield are good for defense.

Helmet: You want the highest energy shield helmet you can afford, this is very important for defense because you take Subterfuge Mask

Body Armour: Hyrri's Ire Is easily the best in slot but not required, if you can't afford it just buy the highest evasion body armour you can afford, preferable with deflection rating.

Boots: Just want high movement speed and either life or %ES/Evasion, preferable with deflect rating.

Jewels: Get one jewel with %mana on kill, this will make your mana feel extremely good for while mapping. For unique jewels, Against the Darkness with any extra mod is fine (cold/fire/light/chaos)
Heart of the Well with 2 gain extra mods is also ideal.
For regular rare jewels, you just want crit/crit dmg/magnitude of poison
4 Mod Rare Radius jewels are also extremely strong but will be expensive

Anoint:
For damage: Lasting Trauma is what I recommend.
For defense: Patient Barrier Decent option for more ES
Cheap option: Serrated Edges

The links are in prio, so takeout the the last gem if you don't have a 6 link in that skill.

Quality prio: Toxic Growth > Poisonburst Arrow > Vine Arrow > Gas Arrow
Link prio: Toxic Growth > Poisonburst Arrow > Vine Arrow > Gas Arrow

Herald of Blood can stay at a low level, I keep mine around lvl 12-14.

Fork/pierce are really nice on poisonburst arrow, depending on how your damage feels it can be your 5th or 6th link. Feel free to also tryout Multishot II instead of Poison III

For extra Pinnacle boss damage you can takeout Herald of Blood for bossing since it doesn't do anything and replace it with Withering Presence with Prolonged Duration II

Get a high attack speed Dreaming Quarterstaff in your weapon swap for Hand of Chayula, this is really effective on both map bosses and pinnacle bosses. One button to apply your curse and mana leech.
To have the lowest int requirement possible, you should get a lvl 17 Despair and corrupt it for +1, making the int requirement only 126 while still being lvl 18. (lvl 18 is the bare minimum level for the curse to still work on pinnacle bosses).

Only take Exploit if you're consistently igniting, chilling or shocking a boss.

Once you have a really solid quiver you should take Master Fletching.

Poison nodes are the highest priority, crit nodes without a crit bow are pretty low priority but there ends up being no other good nodes to take.

How it Plays

Quest Rewards in Campaign

  • 1) Act 2 Medallion: Increase charm charges gained
  • 2) Act 3 Venom reward - Stun threshold
  • 3) Tattoo act 4 reward - Dex/Int/Fire resist(can also take str)
  • 4) Act 4 Prison - life recovery from flask
  • 5) Interlude Pillar reward - Can choose Resist, MS or global defense (it's free to change at anytime)

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I solve mana issues?
It's important to have a Ultimate Mana Flask with "Increased mana recovered" - You can also spec into Considered Casting for 3 points, which gives you a massive mana cost reduction. You can also get one piece of gear with physical mana leech, assuming you have a decent phys bow. You can also buy one Sapphire with %mana on kill.
You can also use Voltaic Mark with Mark of Siphoning II for bosses.
  • I'm squishy/keep dying, what can I do?
Unfortunately all ranger builds are rather squishy early on, the big defensive boost is when you go hybrid with a 400+ es helmet and 2k+ evasion chest for Subterfuge Mask and Spectral Ward, combined with Ghost Dance this usually doubles your pool while providing solid recovery. Before that point just focus on high life gear with a solid 2k+ evasion chest.
  • What's my rotation?
Early on for mapping before you have enough gear you'll be clearing packs with Poisonburst Arrow and Toxic Growth, eventually when you gear enough it'll become a one button mapping build with Poisonburst Arrow. For bosses you'll use 3 skills, pre-fire Vine Arrow/Gas Arrow and spam Toxic Growth. If you have low damage, you might need to use 2 Gas Arrow to quickly pop your Toxic Growth pods. (they detonate based on your poison damage dealt).

How it Works

Crafting Guide

Bow - ilvl 75: To start off you need a bow with t2 %phys (155-169% inc physical dmg) - Can either buy or pickup bases and trans/aug, until you acquire one
1) Once you have the base, just use Essence of abrasion to give it a 2nd prefix
2) Use a "dextral crystallization" with "Perfect Electricity" to craft your third prefix (any as extra works)
3) Use an "omen of greater exaltation" with a "Greater exalt" to fill your suffix (if you hit crit chance, the craft is done).
4) assuming you hit nothing, use "dextral necromancy" with a jawbone to add a desecrated suffix.
5) Now you'll use "perfect battle essence" and "perfect haste essence" - You'll keep doing this, until your suffixes are +3/onslaught/desecrated mod - if you knock off the desecrated mod, reapply it with dextral necromancy. (Keep in mind if you have 6 affixes on an item, than battle/haste essence can only remove a suffix)
6) Now that your suffixes are mostly done, this can be the expensive part. You can either settle for any unveil for low investment or for a GG bow, you keep using omen of lights/jawbone until you get t4 crit or better.

Quiver - ilvl 75: The quiver craft is mostly RNG but there's some steps you can take to improve your odds of success, just keep in mind most crafts will end up being mediocre when it comes to the quiver.
1) Perfect trans/aug quiver until 2 good affixes (flat dmg or inc bow dmg on prefix and +2, crit or atk speed on suffix).
2) Perfect regal and hope for a 3rd good affix (suffix is the ideal scenario here).
3) If it hit a bad affix, you can use a greater chaos orb and try to replace the bad affix, 2/3 to brick here.
4) Dextral necromancy + jawbone on the quiver, if it's 3 gg mods you should use an abyssal echoes
5) If you hit a good suffix, you should consider using perfect exalt+double exalt omen to finish the craft
This is the cheapest way to make a GG quiver, lots of rng steps but eventually you will hit. More expensive methods will require omen of lights, fracture and/or whittles.
Quiver - ilvl75: More expensive method
If you hit +2 lvls/crit on the suffix with t1 Flat on the prefix, you can jawbone the suffix and go for a 1/3 fracture (if you miss the fracture it's fine, just do the same steps as above) - If you fracture flat dmg, you can exalt 1 mod on the prefix and than use Essence of hysteria + essence of sinistral crystal to have 100% chance of adding bow dmg onto your prefix. The last prefix you will slam with a perfect exalt and hope to not hit accuracy. If the quiver is 5 GG mods, than you should echoes/omen of light your last suffix until you hit crit or attack speed.
