Intro

Getting the tadpole is one of the best and most meaningful upgrades you can achieve in Subnautica 2.

The tadpole not only gives you greater mobility, but also gives you an infinite air supply as long as it's powered, and allows you to go deeper than before!

But first, we need to get the blueprint:

Getting the Blueprint

You will need 3 different fragments to get the blueprint for the Tadpole.

Let's go over the locations below:

The Old Habitat

There is an Old Habitat around 350-400 meters North of the lifepod spawn.
Go a little further north, and you will find the Tadpole fragment around the scattered ruins near the entrance.

The Ravine

Around 280 meters northeast, there is a ravine. There, go into the natural current, and you will pass a Colony Ruin Platform below, where the fragment is located.

Edge of the Abyssal Crater

First, I recommend that you have both a Standard Air Tank and a Wakemaker. Otherwise, you will have a very hard time getting to where the fragment is.

Head northeast from the lifepod until you reach the edge. If you go straight down, you will eventually see the edge of the Abyssal Crater.
Once you arrive, you will also see a bunch of colony wreckage, where the fragment is hidden.

Crafting the Moonpool + Vehicle Fabricator

Before even crafting the Tadpole, we first need a place to craft it. To start, we make a moonpool in which we place the Vehicle Fabricator.

moonpool

4 x Titanium

Vehicle Fabricator

Vehicle Fabricator

2 x Titanium Ingor

1 x Copper Ingot

2 x Glass

Processor

Processor

2 x Titanium

1 x Mild Acid

1 x Copper Wiring

To craft Ingots, you need a processor, the recipe of which is displayed above in the table.

Make sure your Moonpool is big enough cause the Vehicle Fabricator takes up quite some space, and we need to place something else inside later as well.

You can expand it using the Habitat Builder, which lets you expand it for about 1 titanium each time.

Crafting the Tadpole

Now we finally come to making the actual Tadpole.

Tadpole

Tadpole

2 x Titanium Ingot

1 x Glass

1 x System Chip

1 x Power Cell

Powercell

Power Cell

2 x Simple Battery

1 x Strong Acid

1 x Salt

System Chip

System Chip

1 x Wiring Kit

2 x Quartz

Now, for the Power Cell, you need a strong acid, for which you need one material to put into the processor.

necrolei cysts

These plants give you Necrolei cysts, then put this inside the Processor to make Strong Acid.

Making a Tadpole Dock

Now we are almost there!

You still need a Dock to put the Tadpole in; otherwise, once it's out of energy, it's unusable.

Tadpole Dock

Tadpole Dock

2 x Titanium Ingot

1 x Silver Ingot

2 x Copper Wire

This is partly why the moonpool needed to be a bit bigger, since you need to fit this inside there as well. Now you have a fully working tadpole setup that is out for progression!

Upgrading the Tadpole

Once you have completed the Tadpole Pens section of the game, which we will not be going into since spoilers??? You can cross the open water section towards the Alien Ruins. Inside the research facility, you will find the modification station.

Modification Station

Modification station

2 x Titanium

2 x Celestine

2 x Copper

Celestine is a new material specific to the Alien Ruins section.
A great location is deep, around 200 meters southeast of the Alien Ruins. Take your Sonic Resonator with you cause they only come in big chunks.

Now for the upgrades, where to find their blueprints, and what materials you need to craft them:

Tadpole Depth Module MK.1

Southeast of the Alien Research Base at the bottom of the Needler nest

3 x Celestine

2 x Enamel Glass

1 x System Chip

Engine Efficiency

As you enter the Alien Research Facility on the right on a table

1 x Titanium Ingot

2 x Glass

1 x System Chip

Enamel Glass is made by combining 1 x Glass and 1 x Creature Enamel. Which is found about 200 meters southeast of the alien ruins, sticking out of the rocks

Creature Enamled

There are more recipes, but they are much more late game, so I will go less in depth about how to gather the materials, but will still state where to find and what materials you need:

Photovoltaic Charger

Go to the Nova Wreck just past the Alien Base, and you should receive a Nova notification about a black box; it's there.

1 x Copper Ingot

1 x Strong Acid

1 x Troilite

Cavitation Muffler

In the Metal Farms Area, 700 meters east-southeast of the Alien Base

3 x Titanium

2 x Strontium

There is also an attachment you can make to give it better acceleration, turn speed, and top speed:

Tadpole Scout Ray Chassis

Found inside the Tadpole Pens

2 x Plasteel Ingot

1 x Advanced Wiring Kit

1 x Dedicated Core

1 x Strong Acid

And that does it!

There are more upgrades planned for the Tadpole, which are in the files already but not available yet.

Have fun diving!
