What Are Espers?

Espers are the elemental/supernatural system in Neverness to Everness. With each character belonging to one of six types.

The elements affect Combat (Damage Type and Reactions), Team Building, and Exploration. So a whole lot of areas in the game are tied to this core system.

Basic Combat Loop

  • Fill the Esper Meter on characters
  • Swap to the character (with glowing Profile)
  • Trigger Esper reactions
  • Swap to another character with a full meter (for more reactions)
  • Repeat

They are not just elements with different colors... They're the backbone of NTE's combat system.

If you use them wrong, your team falls flat. But use them right, and reactions will carry your team through the toughest fights

The Six Esper Types

The super natural elements are the following:

  • Lakshana | Left Top Trio | Gold/Order
  • Cosmos | Middle Top Trio | Silver/Light
  • Anima | Right Top Trio | Green/Life
  • Incantation | Right Bottom Trio | Red/Force
  • Chaos | Middle Bottom Trio | Purple/Dark
  • Psyche | Left Bottom Trio | Azure/Mind

What Are Esper Abilities?

Esper Ability:

The elemental ability character can trigger upon filling Esper Meter, and switching to the character. It shall triggers a reaction, if the elements of characters correctly aligns on the Esper Wheel. And may leads to a chain reaction between more than two elements.

How to Fill the Meter:

The Esper Meter is a small circular icon next to character portraits. With various actions by different characters fills the Meter at different speeds.

  • Normal Attacks: slow and steady
  • Skill and Ultimate: moderate
  • Dodge Counter: fast
  • Parry: fills entire bar
  • Passive bonus: characters have a stat called "Cycle rate" which gives a multiplier bonus to the Esper Meter generation rate.

Once full, the entire character's portrait glows bright with energy, a clear prompt that Esper Ability is ready to cast.

How to Activate:

Simply swap to the glowing character. An ability is cast, and a reaction occurs, between the element of character on field, and element of character swapped in.

Esper Cycle & Reactions

Esper Cycle: The Basic Rule

  • Each Element reacts with the neighboring two elements. (Duo Cycle)
  • Switching between wrong elements that's not next to each other triggers no reaction
  • Correctly triggering two reactions on either the top Trio or bottom Trio will cause a Trio-Esper Reaction (Triple Cycle)
  • Each character has a passive dedicated to buffing certain reaction.
  • The reaction buff from passives affect the reaction in entire team, regardless of who triggers it. This allow stacking two or more passives that buff exact same reaction.
    • Example: using both Nanally and Jiuyuan in same team to stack passive bonuses for Blossom reaction.

Duo Cycle (Two-Element Reactions)

There are six reactions, one for each two neighboring elements on the Wheel.

  • Lakshana + Cosmos
    • Remora: Marks enemies, and slows their actions.
  • Cosmos + Anima
    • Blossom: Spawns a turret, attacking with AOE.
  • Anima + Incantation
    • Hexed: Deals damage, based on all damage the enemy took in past 12 seconds.
  • Incantation + Chaos
    • Scorch: Apply a DoT over 15 seconds.
  • Chaos + Psyche
    • Nova: Attach to enemy, and deals a burst damage after a delay
  • Psyche + Lakshana
    • Stain: Debuffs the enemy with vulnerability to Psyche and Lakshana damage

Triple Cycle (Three-Element Reactions)

When player successfully triggers two reaction from the same group (Top or Bottom Trio), a third, more powerful Three-Element reaction occurs.

  • Lakshana + Cosmos + Anima (Top Trio)
    • Charged: When the Blossom turret hits target marked by Remora, grant ultimate energy per hit
  • Incantation + Chaos + Psyche (Bottom Trio)
    • Discord: Enemy affected by both Stain and Nova will take massive Break/Stagger damage

Team Building by Esper Cycle

Random teams are clunky and wastes Esper Meter. Building around proper Esper Cycles is the way to go:

Examples of Recommended Team Comps

These are pre-launch examples to explain how team comps are highly affected by Esper Cycle reactions. Not absolute optimized team for Meta or F2P.

  • Blossom team:
    • 2x Anima, 1x Cosmos, 1x Support of choice
    • Stacking Anima passive buffs, a buffer or sustainer, and one Cosmos enabler
    • Nanally, Jiuyuan, Hotori, Adler
  • Discord team:
    • 1x Incantation, 1x Chaos, 1x Psyche, 1x Support or dps of Choice
    • Balancing the application of both Stain and Nova to get consistent Discord
    • Adler, Daffodill, Fadia, flex
  • Soup reaction team:
    • 1x Lakshana, 1x Cosmos, 1x Anima, 1x Incantation
    • Swap between Hexed, Blossom, Remora, and finally Charge reactions. Using 4 neighboring elements for 4 reactions chain.
    • Skia, Chiz, Mint, Adler

Esper for Exploration

Elements are the manifestation of the super natural aspect of the characters, so it often has effects beyond combat.

Anima is like life and wind element, with benefits for movement and exploration.

  • Nanally skill enable her to walk on walls, switching camera and moving in disoriented angle.
  • Meanwhile, Mint can dash mid air with faster speed, reaching higher or further places.
  • Lacrimosa, a chaos character, can copy enemy abilities with her skill, and turn herself into a version of the enemy to use their skills. This works in open world
  • Skia, a Lakshana character who can turn himself into a dark liquid puddle that move on floor or smoothly ascend walls faster than normal climbing.
  • The city is filled with "Anomalies", which are objects or areas distorted by supernatural forces. Espers use their specific elements to stabilize or trigger these, especially Cosmos element that bring things into their original status.
  • Some other puzzles requires mind or force solution. Psyche covers the mind side, and Incantation solves the force side.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Building rainbow team with no connection between elements. This reduce team efficiency tremendously.
  • Swapping between wrong elements. In a Discord team, if you swap between Psyche and Incantation characters no reaction will happen.
  • Leaving characters idle off field for very long, triggering no reactions nor any buffs/debuffs
