Monster Hunter WildsNu Udra (The Black Flame) Guide - Weaknesses, Location, Armor & More

Video Guide

Overview

Nu Udra is a new Cephalopod in Monster Hunter Wilds. It is the apex monster of the Oilwell Basin, and can ignite its body on fire to unleash devastating elemental attacks, as well as slam its tentacles around.

This monster is the only one categorized as a Cephalopod in the series.

This guide is written by PeanutWizard.

Location

Nu Udra can be found roaming the deepest areas of the Oilwell Basin during the Inclemency period.

It can quickly roam the region by easily climbing walls and fitting itself into cracks in the walls.

How to Prepare

Nu Udra’s arsenal of attacks revolves around Fire elemental damage. Hunters should equip armor pieces and skills that boost Fire resistance, and eat meals with Elemental Resistance properties if possible.

Each of Nu Udra’s tentacles can be severed off, reducing its reach, so it’s a good idea to bring severing weapons to the hunt.

Mechanics to Look Out For

Engulf

Nu Udra raises most of its form while spreading out widely and attempting to slam the ground with its tentacles and body. Thankfully, this attack gives you a lot of time to not be under it, so use that to your advantage and get out while you can. Sticking around is not advised!

Quad-Tentacle Pincer Attack

Nu Udra winds up its pinning attack by splaying out four of its tentacles and locking on to a hunter, slamming all of them at one focal point. If this attack connects the hunter will be pinned and should use slinger ammo to attempt to break free. If not, your goose is, quite literally, cooked.

Tentacle Strikes

Tentacle Strikes w/ Bombs + Bomb Fling

Mostly focused on ranged weapon users or shy melee, Nu Udra does have ranged attacks while fire-empowered. It will fling bombs that explode on impact with the ground or a hunter, usually in a quick sequence. These attacks can cause Fireblight so be ready with your .

Flamethrower

The flamethrower attack is one of Nu Udra’s signature moves. It will back up slightly to reveal an oil cannon from its body. That’s when hunters should immediately clear the area.

Nu Udra will let loose the cannon on the ground and ignite, creating a torrent of flames in a large cone. Evading to the side once you see the cannon is key to avoiding this attack in time. The flamethrower, unsurprisingly, deals a huge amount of damage and causes Fireblight.

Spin Attack

Nu Udra will twist itself into a corkscrew and unravel quickly, hitting all hunters in the area. Once you notice the initial twisting that’s your sign to get out of immediate melee range.

Mouth Lash

This is a relatively uncommon attack, usually occurring if a hunter stays near Nu Udra’s “mouth” area for too long. One or both of the mouth tentacles will strike at the player rather snappily. This attack doesn’t do too much damage but can be very disruptive to hunters who are consistently aiming for the head.

Raining Mortars

Perhaps its most devastating attack, Nu Udra will let out a scream and proceed to hurl bombs all over the battlefield while spinning. Getting caught in this will hurt a ton and cause Fireblight.

The best tell of this attack is Nu Udra’s scream and the animation of writhing in place which makes it look like it's “charging up” something fierce. One small upside to this attack, however, is that Nu Udra will lose its fire empowerment once the attack concludes.

Weak Spots to Focus

  • Body Weak Points: Mouth
  • Severable Points: Arms
  • Breakable Points: Head

Nu Udra’s head is its main weak spot, but it’s not easily reachable unless it is knocked down. Hunters should focus on its tentacles in the meanwhile, aiming to chop them off.

Turf Wars

Nu Udra can deal devastating damage to other monsters it encounters, showing its place as the region’s apex predator against monsters like Ajarakan. It also has a turf war with Arkveld.
