Lagiacrus isn't a particularly swift monster, but its attacks can cover a wide area and have electric aftershocks. Some multi-hit attacks can be delayed, catching players off-guard.
Electric Charge
Lagiacrus will charge its body with electricity during the fight and while it's enraged by curling up its body, making its back spikes glow. After a brief delay, it'll send out a thunder explosion around itself, damaging nearby players over time. Avoid standing near Lagiacrus when it performs this attack, as it can quickly chip through your HP bar.
Charging itself with electricity allows Lagiacrus to spit thunder balls and add thunder aftershocks to its other attacks, covering a wider reach. The aftershocks can be difficult to dodge, so avoid standing near its torso and between its legs, which is where the shocks are most prominent.
Lagiacrus has two charge levels, the first adding small aftershocks meanwhile the second one adds heavy-hitting, big thunder explosions, increasing the overall difficulty of the fight by a wide marging.
Hip Check
When Lagiacrus curls up its body and positions itself sideways, it's about to perform a wide-reaching tackle. Its rear and tail cover the most distance, so dodging toward its head and backwards is the safest option to avoid damage.
Lagiacrus can also cancel this animation into a quick tail slam if a hunter is nearby instead. You'll need to react quickly to avoid the slam, but it can be dodged in any direction. It's especially easy to dodge backward or the side the attack is coming from.
When enraged, the hip check will unleash an electric aftershock near Lagiacrus' torso, so avoid dodging into its body in any way.
Body Slam
Lagiacrus will stand in its rear legs before slamming its body forward. While it does not have a long reach, it can perform this attack immediately after another one, so keep an eye out. While enraged, the slam will be accompanied by a thunder aftershock to the sides.
Thunder Roar
While enraged, the Electric Surge attack will become a roar, leaving players immobile, and cause a bigger aftershock on its sides. If you see Lagiacrus curling up its body while enraged and the electric spikes glow, get away from him immediately, or otherwise move toward its rear. This attack creates a temporary wound on its back spikes after.
Tail Sweep
Lagiacrus performs a 180-degree bite backward, and then a sweep tail. Move back when you see it tilt its front legs up in the air, and dodge to the opposite side its tail is on to avoid it hitting you later.
Bite Attacks
Lagiacrus can perform multiple variations of biting attacks, all of which start with it tilting its head downward at the player and then lunging forward. The longer the attack windup, the stronger the attack will be.
A variation of this move will have Lagiacrus perform a horizontal bite attack first, and then move its head up and lunge to a player from a side. While the first half of the attack is easily dodged backward, keep an eye out for the second bite and dodge to a side.
Dash Attack
Lagiacrus will curl up its body backwards and put its head up in the air before dashing to a player. While enraged, it sends out thunder shocks to its sides and can be chained twice. Roll sideways or block the attack to avoid damage.
Thunder Ball
Lagiacrus can spit out electric balls causing AoE explosions when they hit. Look for signs of electricity on Lagiacrus' chest and neck and dodge appropriately: There are two variations of this attack, as it can throw the balls sideways or directly forward.
In the first case, Lagiacrus will curl up its neck backward, and you should dodge sideways. When enraged, Lagiacrus can chain this move twice, the second ball having better aim. Make sure to dodge twice and get on top of it to retaliate.
Lagiacrus will point its head up in the air if it's going to spit out the thunderballs sideways. You can dodge directly into Lagiacrus to avoid it, or otherwise backward.
Underwater Hunting
Once Lagiacrus gets in its nest in Area 19, he will eventually dash onto the water and players will have to follow it. If left free, Lagiacrus will overcharge itself and release an area-wide attack that can K.O. players with a single hit.
Once inside water, the Hunter controls will change a little bit. Press (R1) to ascend and (R2) to descend. You can dodge in any direction by pressing (X) like usual.
You'll find multiple Slinger Pods across the area. These will deal a large chunk of damage and can pierce through Lagiacrus, so position yourself in a way that the shot deals the most damage to it. The Slinger shots also have staggering properties, so you can use them to briefly stop Lagiacrus in place.
Several Submerged Rubbers will be present in the area too. You can make them fall with the hook slinger with (â—¯) like other rocks, but Lagiacrus will need to be directly underneath them to take damage. Lure it into the rocks and dodge to then release the rubble at it.
While underwater, you can fire the Clutch Claw by aiming (L2) and then pressing (R1). If you're near Lagiacrus, you'll hook onto its body as if you were mounting it, and can perform Knife attacks or Weapon attacks. The objective is opening up wounds and using a weapon finisher with (R1) to deal huge damage. Do this only when Lagiacrus is staggered though, as it can easily throw you away with its attacks.
Underwater Attacks
Lagiacrus keeps its moveset while in water: He can lunge at players, perform hip checks when close, and throw thunder balls from a distance. All of these attacks can be easily dodged by pressing (X) in any direction or by Ascending or Descending. Be careful and don't be caught in the sea bottom or near walls, though, because its attacks can be unavoidable.
After a while, Lagiacrus will reach maximum charge, and its attacks will cause powerful AoE aftershocks near him, and Lagi will chain multiple attacks one after another. You will often need to evade twice or keep moving away from its attacks to avoid getting hit. Keep using slinger ammo, rocks, and the Clutch Claw to chip away at his HP like before.
After you've dealt enough damage, a cutscene will play where your hunter will perform a finisher on Lagiacrus, making him jump to land again and triggering a K.O. At this point, Lagiacrus will be heavily damaged, almost in capture state.
