How to Play

As Hecarim Top, your goal is to play relatively safe until your first back. You need your first component item and multiple points in your Q to really win the matchup. Focus on farming and then recall when you get enough gold. After you get the component item, you can play more aggressively: go all-in while throwing your Q as often as you can.

Keep the minion wave closer to your side of the map, especially early, so you can chase the enemy down the lane and look for those aggressive plays. When you’re level 6, continue keeping the wave closer to your side of the map and then look for aggressive all-ins when you can. Before casting your Ultimate, always check the map to see where the enemy Jungler is, since you don’t want to go in and have them suddenly show up.

Outside of the laning phase, Hecarim Top is played similarly to Jungle Hecarim. Look for picks with your Ultimate, apply pressure by split-pushing, and keep gaining as much CS and XP as possible.

Runes Explained

Your best bet is to go AD Marks on Hecarim, as it increases your damage output while trading with the enemy and makes last-hitting easier. Seal of Armor is good because most Top lakers you will face are AD, and the extra Armor will help to protect you. Finally, take Magic Resist Glyphs because you'll face an AP mid laner or mixed team comps in LoL Classic, so the extra MR helps protect you from their damage. It also helps if you’re facing an AP Top Laner like Singed.

Because of your Passive, it’s a good idea to take Movement Speed Quints, as they basically give you extra damage. You can go Attack Damage Quints instead if you want to, but Movement Speed is generally better.

Masteries Explained

As Hecarim is an AD champion and will be played as a bruiser/fighter champion, we recommend going 21 points in the Offense Tree and 9 points in Defense. Put 21 points into all the Mastery slots that increase your damage output and make it easier to kill the enemy laner. The extra AD/last hitting ability will help you throughout the game.

The final 9 points will go in the Defense Tree, focusing on extra protection in lane to increase your survivability and make it harder for you to die in lane. You could go Utility, but there aren’t many good options, and Offense/Defense is better in the long run.
