Cho'Gath doesn't rely heavily on Attack Damage or Ability Power, so your rune choices should focus on utility and survivability instead. Take Attack Speed Marks to make last hitting easier and to get more value from your Vorpal Spikes.
For Seals and Glyphs, prioritize Armor and Magic Resist to help you through the laning phase and teamfights. Finally, Movement Speed Quintessences are the ideal choice, allowing you to stick to enemies more easily and get into range to finish them off with your ultimate.
Masteries
When playing Cho'Gath, you should prioritize the Defense tree to maximize his tankiness. The bonus Resistances, damage reduction, and increased Health all complement his naturally resilient kit, making him even harder to kill as the game progresses.
For your secondary tree, Utility is the best choice. The reduced Summoner Spell cooldowns are especially valuable, while the bonus movement speed helps you get back to lane more quickly and gives you more opportunities to roam and impact other lanes.
Changes for Classic
Feast (R) stacks max 6 times, is lost on kill but can be stacked on anything- Vorpal Spikes (E) toggles the spikes that go through players

How to Play
Cho'Gath is a safe farming jungler with excellent sustain thanks to his Carnivore passive, allowing you to stay healthy throughout your first clear. Focus on clearing efficiently rather than forcing early ganks, although your Q can set up kills if a lane is overextended.
Look to secure objectives with Feast (R), as comboing it with Smite will make it pretty hard to lose out on a Dragon or Baron. Once you've built a few Feast stacks, you'll become extremely difficult to kill while still providing strong crown control for your team.
