Use your R proactively when you see your teammates going for 1v1’s. Keep a constant eye on the map for ganks and be prepared to pull the trigger if needed.
In team fights, look to flank the enemy backline and aim to taunt as many champions as you can. Only do this if your team is there to follow up.
Shen is a good early game ganker. Try to gank enemy lanes that are overextended to make it easier for you to kill the enemy.

For runes, you should pick Hail of Blades as your keystone, followed by Sudden Impact, Eyeball Collection and Relentless Hunter in the primary tree, as well as Magical Footwear and Cosmic Insight in the secondary tree.
