Illaoi’s Tentacle Smash Q is a great poke tool and is great for wave control too. However, it is slightly more expensive than her Harsh Lesson W. If you can, try and use a terrain Tentacle instead of your Q to trade with the enemy. Essentially, they will do the same job at the cost of less mana!

Take advantage of your Harsh Lesson W auto-attack reset by (when applicable) walking up to the enemy, auto-attacking once and then using your W.

Illaoi’s Ultimate Leap of Faith R has a brief moment of unstoppability at the beginning. This can be used to dodge critical crowd control that would otherwise limit your damage potential.
