Build Overview

In ancient Egyptian mythology, Anubis is the god of Death; making Anubis a fitting god for to represent this deadly Aspect. As the god of death, Aspect of Anubis summons dead shades to your aid, and sends them to destroy your foes!

If you tried out Aspect of Anubis and thought it was clunky, slow, can't hitstun, and the Attacks are weak, I don't blame you. At first look, it may appear as an underwhelming aspect, but once you understand how to build for it properly, you'll understand why it's a contender for one of the best Weapons in the whole game.

Below, you'll find a full breakdown of mechanical tech you'll need to practice to master the staff of Death. Be sure to pay close attention to "General Tips and Tricks."

Basically, the TLDR on what makes Aspect of Anubis so good is that you can place down the huge AoE damaging field Attack, drop your Cast in it, then run around and use a few Specials to pull foes into the kill circle.

The major downside of this hidden Staff is that neither the Attack nor Special hits stun. You have to be extra careful with your positioning. Sometimes your Special will yank a foe right into your face, and you'll get hit in a moment where you should have been safe. It's going to happen, so don't sweat it, you just need to be aware of this interaction.

  • This guide is how I built Anubis when going for 62 Fear in the underworld. You'll see my victory screens at the bottom of this build are very similar to listed loadout. RNG always effects your run, so the guide takes into account randomness, variations, and gives you multiple good options to work with.

The Entire build hangs on Scorch damage. Your main priority is getting high rarity Flame Strike and Pyro Technique, then Pomming them whenever it is convenient. Of course you're going to need some luck with the Duo Boons, but I think it's rare that I won't get at least one of the Scorch Duos at some point in the run.

General Tips and Tricks

Aspect Specific Mechanics

If there is one single tip you take away from this build guide, it should be an understanding of how to Dash attack cancel.

You'll immediately notice the eternity it takes for Melinoë to walk up, flip the staff around, slam it into the ground, pick it up, and be able to Dash or walk away. If you can get consistent with this animation cancel, you will take way less damage, and can be super aggressive with your Attack field placement.

How to Dash Cancel Anubis Attack

The secret is that you need to Sprint before using Attack, not just Dash. The Dash-strike is much faster than a regular Attack, but even using a normal Dash-strike means you will have to wait for the dash cooldown to reset before you can dodge to safety.

  1. Hold Dash and Sprint for a moment
  2. Dash-strike
  3. The instant Aspect of Anubis hits the ground, cancel the recovery with another Dash.

If you did it right, you'll have massively reduced the time it takes for you to stand in place to Attack.

You can also use the dash-cancel to set up Omega Attacks as well! Just place the first Attack, then during the 2nd Dash, start channeling the Omega.

Here's a video demonstrating the tech:

The first few 15 seconds are are examples of what NOT to do. Worst of all is when you start a regular Attack, then Dash forward mid-Attack. If you're Dash-strike looks like any of those, your timing is off.

Notice how much faster and more evasive Melinoë in the last 15 seconds. When she waits to Sprint before Dash-Striking, she can dash back out very quickly, making it difficult for foes to hit her.

  • btw, to clarify you wouldn't repeatedly spam Attack like this in a real game. This is for demonstration purposes only.

Using Specials

Next up is how and when to use your Specials. If you have the Magick for it, you can pretty much non-stop spam Omega Specials at long range. The base Power is very high, making it perfect for damage % boons like Sworn Flourish.

However, you do need to be very intentional and careful when using Specials. At longer ranges, the Omega Special is generally safe. But the standard Special's limited range means foes will always be close enough to have their attack pulled into hit you.

You should only use your standard Special to pull enemies into your Attack field. If they are already inside the field, leave them alone or you'll likely pull them back out of it and to safety!

  • Guardians are not effected by the Special pull.

Combat Loop

Video Demonstrating Omega Attack Combat Loop:

  1. Sprint in, use the dash-strike-cancel
    1. If you're quick you can Drop Cast just before the Attack
  2. Run way and use Specials to pull enemies into the Attack Field.

When safe to do so, you should work in Omega Attacks/Specials. The Omega Attack arch is crazy good at applying Scorch very quickly! Again, you can always dash away and channel the Omega Attack. It lands pretty far in front of Melinoë, so its fairly safe when used well.

The same simple Combat Loop applies to Omega Attacks, just hold Attack as you Dash out so you'll start channeling the Omega immediately after placing the standard Attack field.

Starting Loadout

Weapon

Aspect of Anubis' Attacks deal low damage, but hit rapidly and automatically after you've placed the field down.

On-hit effects like Waves, Scorch, and Blitz benefit the most from the quick hits. Sworn Strike is pretty common choice as well. The huge AoE makes it easy to inflict Hitch on multiple foes at once, but the single-target damage is quite low, so I'd only take it if the other three are unavailable for the run.

The Omega Specials hit HARD but use a lot of Magick. Any of the Special Damage % Boons work well here. We're aiming for Flutter Flourish, but Sworn Flourish, Ice Flourish, and Vicious Flourish are fine substitutes.

Keepsakes

Should go without saying, but we're starting with Everlasting Ember and hoping to hit a rare+ Flame Strike.

For the second region, if you don't already have either Aphrodite or Demeter in your God Pool, it's worth equipping one of their Keepsakes in the second region. You're definitely going to want at least one of their duos Burning Desire or Freezer Burn to maximize the Scorch Damage.

Third and fourth regions, go with whatever sounds most beneficial to you at the moment. But I'll always recommend Experimental Hammer in 3rd because there are so many good Hammers for Aspect of Anubis.

Generally in the final region, you'll want a defensive Keepsake like Luckier Tooth, Knuckle Bones, or Engraved Pin.

Animal Familiar

Bring Hecuba with you because Anubis' base Omega Specials use 30 Magick, and you're going to struggle to utilize Omega Moves the first couple regions without her. Listen for Hecuba's "Bark" and take advantage of her stun to move in, and drop you Attack + Cast.

God Boons

Every Boon you see in the loadout is either going to help our Scorch damage, or make it safer to play Anubis.

To maintain maximum Scorch on Guardian, there's nothing better than Burning Desire. Weak only lasts for one second so you need Glamour Gain to keep the foe Weak at virtually all times.

Rapture Ring can also be used for the Duo, and the CC is great for keeping standard foes inside your Attack field.

Static Shock also works shockingly well with Aspect of Anubis because every tick of the Attack damage field triggers the chain-lightning.

Arctic Ring is another preferred Boon because of Freezer Burn, and the fact that Freeze kind of makes up for Anubis' lack of hitstun.

  • Check out the Scorch Guide if you need more help understanding its mechanics.

Lastly, a ranged Cast Boon will make everything about the Combat Loop significantly easier. Glowing Coal will be available since we already have Hestia.

If you see Zeus, Lightning Lance is faster and some find it more consistent to aim with. Plus, you can always throw Heaven Flourish on Special, and get a chance for Thermal Dynamics.
