Overview

STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl has received its largest overhaul since launch with the Back to the Zone Update 2.0.

Update 2.0 upgrades the game to Unreal Engine 5.5.4 and introduces major visual improvements, expanded A-Life behavior, custom difficulty settings, binoculars, new weapons, fog mechanics and more than 500 fixes.

Unreal Engine 5.5.4 and Improved Visuals

STALKER 2 has been upgraded to Unreal Engine 5.5.4 as part of the technical work behind Update 2.0.

Lighting has been changed across outdoor, indoor and underground environments. Sunlight, shadows and reflections should now interact more naturally with the surroundings, while buildings and underground areas have received more realistic interior lighting.

GSC has also reworked the landscape and foliage to give the Zone a more natural appearance. Hundreds of problems involving floating or misplaced environmental objects have been fixed as well.

Further art and level design improvements have been made across numerous regions, including SIRCAA, Chemical Plant, Yaniv, Wild Island, Rostok, Burnt Forest, Zaton, Lesser Zone, Garbage, Cooling Towers and Jupiter.

Major A-Life Improvements

A-Life has received another substantial update, changing how stalkers and mutants behave throughout the Zone.

Characters and creatures can now occupy a wider selection of campfires, bus stops and other points of interest. These locations may become contested by stalkers and mutants.

Stalkers can also loot fallen characters while the player is elsewhere, allowing more activity to continue beyond the player’s immediate surroundings.

Several unnatural behaviors have been fixed. Enemies should no longer shoot or throw objects through solid walls, while changes have been made to prevent certain locations from becoming overcrowded with NPCs or powerful mutants.

Neutral NPCs should react properly to nearby combat, and characters should behave more reliably when searching for shelter during Emissions.

Custom Difficulty Settings

Update 2.0 introduces Custom Rules, allowing players to adjust individual difficulty settings instead of relying on a fixed preset.

Players can make combat more dangerous while keeping the economy forgiving, or make anomalies easier without reducing every other challenge. This gives each player more control over their experience in the Zone.

New Equipment

Binoculars

Update 2.0 introduces three binocular models: the FOB-45, Yastrub and Fighter.

Each model offers different technology and functionality. Binoculars allow players to examine the surrounding area, identify allies or potential targets and plan an approach before entering combat.

They can be found while exploring the Zone or purchased from certain traders.

Weapons and Scopes

Four new weapons have been added:

  • Arev assault rifle
  • GP3A designated marksman rifle
  • SKP designated marksman rifle
  • Fora-230 submachine gun

A unique version of one of these weapons can also be found somewhere in the Zone.

Western weapons receive a new 3x scope, while Eastern weapons can use an additional red-dot sight. Offset aiming is no longer restricted to night vision equipment either, making it available in more situations.

Fog and New World Features

Fog is now a complete gameplay mechanic rather than only a visual weather effect.

Visibility and hearing are reduced for both the player and nearby enemies while surrounded by fog. This can be used to avoid encounters or approach enemies more quietly.

Cloudy and rainy weather have also received visual improvements as part of the update.

The PDA now contains a Statistics page that records different parts of the player’s journey, including weapon usage and encounters with mutants. It provides a clearer look at how each player has approached the game and which equipment they have relied on.

Bloodsuckers can now have different appearances depending on their habitat. Fleshes have received similar environmental variations, adding more visual variety to the mutant population.

New places have also been added to Prypiat for players to discover while exploring.

Modding and Other Improvements

The Zone Kit now includes tools for narrative scripting, audio and localization, allowing modders to create more complete story focused content. Material support, testing tools and the in-game Mod Browser have also been improved, while Steam Workshop users can now load saves with installed mods while offline.

Update 2.0 also includes more than 500 fixes across missions, AI, controls, animations, inventory management, Emissions and the open world. These fixes address blocked mission progress, unreliable NPC behaviour, movement and input problems, unsafe shelters, unreachable artifacts and misplaced anomalies.

Back to the Zone improves almost every major part of STALKER 2. The upgraded visuals, A-Life changes, new equipment, custom difficulty settings and expanded modding tools give both new and returning players plenty to experience.
