The Modern Warfare 4 Beta offers an early look at the game’s multiplayer, movement and weapon systems ahead of its full release. It also goes beyond the usual multiplayer preview with a complete Campaign mission, large scale Ground War battles and Warzone Resurgence.
Not everything will be available immediately, with additional maps, modes and progression unlocks being introduced throughout the two beta weekends.
Modern Warfare 4 Beta Dates and Access
The beta is divided into an Early Access period and a free Open Beta:
Early Access: August 21 at 11:00 AM PT until August 25 at 10:00 AM PT
Open Beta: August 28 at 10:00 AM PT until September 1 at 10:00 AM PT
Early Access is available to players who have pre-ordered Modern Warfare 4 or redeemed an eligible Beta Code. It can be played on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Steam and Battle.net.
Weekend Two is free for everyone and also opens the beta to Nintendo Switch 2 players. No pre-order or Beta Code is required.
Multiplayer Maps and Modes
Early Access begins with three Core 6v6 maps:
Rooftops
Silkworm
Transit 213
The opening playlists feature Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint and Kill Confirmed through Quick Play and Open Moshpit.
The full beta map pool also includes Cachette, Lithium and Lotus, bringing the confirmed selection to six Core maps across both weekends.
More modes will be introduced as the beta continues, including Search and Destroy and two new 6v6 modes: Hijack and Inflation.
In Hijack, both teams fight for control of a Data Spike. It can be carried, thrown or passed between teammates before being planted at the enemy Comm Station. Once planted, it generates points until it detonates or the defending team successfully defuses it.
Inflation revolves around collecting cash from eliminated enemies. Players carrying the most money become marked High Value Targets, making them important targets for the enemy and valuable players for their teammates to protect.
Entrenched Campaign Mission
For the first time in Call of Duty Beta history, players can experience a complete Campaign mission before launch.
The mission is called Entrenched and follows a large scale ground assault to protect a strategically important nuclear power station. Players fight alongside friendly infantry and armored vehicles while getting an early look at Modern Warfare 4’s weapons, movement and combat.
Test the New Movement System
The beta includes a Mobility Course designed to introduce Modern Warfare 4’s expanded movement system before players enter multiplayer.
Its Beginner, Intermediate and Expert challenges cover mechanics such as carrying momentum through mantles, sliding after clearing obstacles, climbing pipes and using the new Supine Slide. Each course begins with guidance before testing players in a timed run, making it an easy way to practice the new movement and improve completion times.
Combat Outpost Ground War
Modern Warfare 4 introduces Combat Outpost, a new 24v24 Ground War mode that combines objective play with infantry and vehicle combat.
Teams must capture Outposts to generate points and create additional spawn locations. Captured positions can then be reinforced to unlock stronger support, ranging from local UAV coverage to armored vehicles.
Combat Outpost is played across two large maps. Imjin Farmlands and Wolves Stadium.
Kill Block and Gunfight
Gunfight returns on Kill Block, a dynamic battlefield formed from three connected sections known as Slabs.
The map and shared random loadout change after every two rounds, forcing players to regularly adapt to different routes, sightlines and weapons. A round is won by eliminating the opposing team or capturing the Overtime Flag.
The beta includes traditional 3v3 Gunfight alongside a new 10v10 version. The 10v10 playlist is available from the beginning of Early Access, with the wider Kill Block offering expanding as the beta continues.
Warzone Resurgence in Weekend Two
Warzone will be included in a Call of Duty Beta for the first time when Resurgence arrives during Weekend Two.
The 44-player mode takes place on Zodiac. Its combat areas include offices, manufacturing buildings, train lines, rooftops, tunnels, docks and the surrounding shoreline.
Resurgence allows eliminated players to return while at least one member of their squad remains alive. Eliminating opponents and completing Contracts can reduce the time teammates must wait before redeploying.
Weapons and Create a Class
Weekend One begins with access to 14 multiplayer weapons. The complete beta includes up to 22 weapons when later unlocks and weapons limited to default loadouts or the Campaign mission are included.
The selection covers nine weapon classes, including Assault Rifles, SMGs, Shotguns, LMGs, Marksman Rifles, Sniper Rifles, Pistols, a Launcher and a Melee weapon.
Create a Class unlocks at Player Level 4. From there, players can customize their weapons, equipment, Perks, Field Upgrade, Killstreaks and Operator.
Gunsmith also returns alongside the new Apex Attachment system. Apex Attachments are specialized modifications earned by fully levelling supported weapons, and they do not occupy one of the weapon’s standard attachment slots.
Progression and What Carries Over
The Player Level cap is 20 during Weekend One before increasing to 30 in Weekend Two. Levelling unlocks additional weapons, equipment, Perks, Field Upgrades and Killstreaks.
Progress made during Early Access carries into the Open Beta. However, Player Levels, weapon unlocks and other gameplay progression will reset when the beta ends. Any eligible cosmetic Beta Rewards you earn will remain connected to your Activision Account and become available when Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23.
