Intro

The Deep North introduces several new armor sets, but just like with weapons, the best option depends on how far you have progressed through the biome.

When you first arrive, you will still rely on strong Ashlands armor. Once you unlock Bloodgold, Moulds, and the Frost Foundry, you can transition into the new Deep North armor sets. Finally, before fighting Kall Fimbulbringer, some setups become more useful depending on whether you value raw protection, mobility, or build-specific bonuses.

In this guide, we will cover the best armor for each major stage of Deep North progression:

Early Deep North

The strongest armor sets to bring with you from the Ashlands.

Mid Deep North

The best armor to craft once Deep North equipment becomes available.

Before Kall Fimbulbringer

The strongest options for preparing for the final boss.

This guide focuses on armor progression rather than the boss fight itself. For a full breakdown of Kall's attacks, phases, damage types, and strategy, refer to our dedicated Kall Fimbulbringer Boss Guide.

Best Early Deep North Armor

Early Deep North

When you first enter the Deep North, you will still be relying on Ashlands-tier armor. At this stage, there is no reason to force an early switch, because the new Deep North sets require Bloodgold, Moulds, and the Frost Foundry before they become available.

The best choice therefore depends mostly on your build.

Flametal Armor

For melee builds, Flametal Armor is the safest option to bring into the Deep North.

It provides the highest raw defense among the Ashlands sets and is ideal if you expect to fight enemies head-on. The extra protection is especially useful during your first few trips, when you are still learning how dangerous the new enemies are.

If you are playing a conventional Sword, Axe, Mace, or heavy weapon build, this is probably the easiest set to recommend.

Ask Set

The Ask Set is the better choice for players who value mobility and Stamina efficiency.

Its full set bonus reduces the Stamina cost of running, jumping, and attacking while also increasing Pierce damage. That makes it especially useful for Bow-focused or more agile melee builds.

The Deep North has awkward terrain and long stretches of snow and ice, so the improved mobility can be just as valuable as higher Armor depending on your playstyle.

Embla Set

Magic builds should generally stick with the Embla Set when first entering the biome.

It provides much less physical protection than Flametal, but the large Eitr regeneration bonus is far more important if your build relies heavily on Staffs.

You will eventually gain access to new Deep North magic armor, but Embla remains perfectly capable of carrying an established mage build through the early progression.

Do Not Ignore Your Cape

Your cape choice is also important because the Deep North is a freezing biome.

Capes with Frost Resistance, such as the Ashen or Feather Cape, can remove the need to constantly rely on Frost Resistance Mead while exploring.

Use whichever cape best complements your build and movement needs, but make sure you have a reliable source of Frost Resistance before spending long periods in the biome.

What Should You Use?

For most players:

  • Flametal Armor is the best general defensive choice.
  • Ask Armor is better for fast or ranged builds.
  • Embla Armor remains the natural choice for magic users.

You do not need to abandon an upgraded Ashlands set the moment you enter the Deep North. Keep using it while you gather Frost Cores, Bloodgold, and armor Moulds, then transition once the new Deep North sets become available.

If you are not sure how to unlock Bloodgold, the Frost Foundry, or Deep North Moulds, refer back to our Deep North Progression Guide for the full crafting route through the biome.

Best Mid Deep North Armor

Middle Deep North

Once you start collecting Bloodgold, armor Moulds, and using the Frost Foundry, you can finally transition away from your Ashlands gear and into the new Deep North armor sets.

Unlike earlier biomes, there is not one obvious armor upgrade for every build. The Deep North gives you several distinct options depending on whether you want maximum defense, better mobility, or stronger Eitr regeneration.

Lox Fur Set

The Lox Fur Set is one of the first Deep North armor sets you can realistically move into.

It is lighter than the later Bloodgold sets and provides enough protection to serve as a useful stepping stone while you are still gathering Moulds and Bloodgold for your final equipment. It also fits the biome naturally as an exploration-focused set before you commit to one of the more specialized late-game options.

You do not necessarily need to fully upgrade it if your Ashlands armor is already strong. Think of it more as an optional transition set rather than something every build must craft.

Protector Set

The Protector Set is the main heavy armor progression for the Deep North.

Each piece starts at 44 Armor, making it the highest-defense option among the new sets. The Breastplate also provides Frost resistance, which is useful while exploring the biome.

This is the easiest recommendation for melee players who care primarily about survivability.

The downside is weight and mobility. If your build already relies on slower weapons, adding the heaviest armor in the game can make Stamina management more important.

Vanguard Set

The Vanguard Set is the more mobile alternative.

Each piece provides less Armor than Protector, but wearing the full set grants a strong combination of bonuses including improved Stamina regeneration, Health regeneration, reduced dodge Stamina cost, reduced run Stamina cost, and increased Pierce damage.

This makes it particularly strong for players who prefer faster melee weapons, Spears, Bows, or generally more aggressive movement-heavy builds.

The Vanguard Set is probably the best general-purpose Deep North armor if you do not want to commit fully to either heavy armor or magic.

Caller Set

Magic builds should aim for the Caller Set.

It is the natural upgrade from Embla and is designed around Eitr-based builds. The set provides much lower physical protection than Protector, but improves Eitr regeneration and other magic-focused stats instead.

If your main damage comes from Staffs, the loss of raw Armor is usually worth the improved resource economy.

Deep North Capes

Your cape also becomes part of your build rather than simply a Frost-resistance slot.

The Moose Hide Cape gives Frost resistance while reducing both attack and run Stamina usage, making it extremely strong for physical builds.

The Cape of the Caller also provides Frost resistance, but instead improves Eitr regeneration and reduces dodge Stamina cost, making it the obvious companion to the Caller Set.

Which Set Should You Craft?

For most builds, the choice is straightforward:

  • Protector Set for maximum defense and conventional melee.
  • Vanguard Set for mobility, Stamina efficiency, and faster physical builds.
  • Caller Set for Eitr and magic.

Lox Fur works well as an earlier transition set if you want Deep North armor before committing large amounts of Bloodgold to one of the stronger sets.

Since armor Moulds and Bloodgold take time to obtain, I would choose the set that actually matches your build instead of crafting every armor piece you unlock.

If you are still missing Bloodgold, Frost Cores, armor Moulds, or the Frost Foundry, our Deep North Progression Guide covers the full crafting route.

Best Armor for Kall Fimbulbringer

Kall Fimbulbringer

When preparing for Kall Fimbulbringer, armor choice comes down to how much you value raw defense versus mobility and build-specific bonuses.

Kall deals heavy physical damage throughout the fight and adds additional Fire and Frost pressure in the later phases. Because of this, the best armor is usually whatever lets your build stay alive while still keeping enough Stamina to dodge and reposition.

For a full breakdown of his attacks and all three phases, refer to our dedicated Kall Fimbulbringer Boss Guide.

Protector Set

The Protector Set is the safest overall choice for most melee players.

It provides the highest raw Armor of the Deep North sets, which is valuable against Kall's heavy chain attacks and makes mistakes less punishing.

This is especially useful during Phase 3, where a single bad dodge can result in taking a large amount of damage.

The main downside is mobility. Heavy armor increases the importance of Stamina management, so avoid exhausting your entire bar while attacking.

If your priority is simply surviving the fight, the Protector Set is the easiest recommendation.

Vanguard Set

The Vanguard Set is arguably the better option for players who are already comfortable with Kall's attack timings.

You lose some raw defense compared to Protector, but gain much better mobility and Stamina efficiency.

That works extremely well in this fight because Kall frequently forces you to reposition with long-range chain attacks, rushes, and the additional pressure introduced in Phase 3.

The reduced dodge and run Stamina costs can make the fight feel considerably smoother, particularly if you prefer faster melee weapons or a more aggressive playstyle.

For experienced players, Vanguard can be just as strong as Protector, simply for a different reason.

Caller Set

Magic builds should continue using the Caller Set.

It provides much less physical protection, but the improved Eitr regeneration is necessary if Staffs are your main source of damage.

Because Kall can punish mistakes heavily, magic players should make even more use of range, positioning, and defensive spells rather than trying to trade hits.

The lower Armor means your food setup and resistances matter more than they would with Protector.

Choose Your Cape Carefully

Your cape should complement the rest of your setup.

The Moose Hide Cape is a strong choice for physical builds because it combines Frost protection with improved Stamina efficiency.

For magic users, the Cape of the Caller is the more natural option because it supports Eitr regeneration while still providing Frost resistance.

Whichever cape you choose, make sure your setup still gives you the elemental protection you need for the fight.

Best Overall Choice

For most players:

  • Protector Set is the safest choice for maximum survivability.
  • Vanguard Set is better if you value mobility and already understand Kall's moveset.
  • Caller Set remains the best option for dedicated magic builds.

There is no single mandatory armor set for the fight. The important thing is to use an upgraded set that matches your build and gives you enough survivability for a long three-phase encounter.
