Method 1: Dungeons/Sift Rifts
The first method of obtaining shards is via completing dungeons out in the open world, or randomly spawning Sift Rifts. Method 2: Defeat Bosses
Of course with a sought after currency, it's bound to drop from the highest difficulty encounters in the game. This is the case with pretty much every encounter you'll find in Dungeons 2, especially main bosses. Taking them down will often reward you with a pile of shards that can be spent at your own will.
Method 3: Soul Swarms
This is by far the best, and quickest method to obtain shards. The only caveat is that in order to actually be able to do it, you must've beaten the main story first. During a swarm (indicated by a message broadcasted to you) storm generators will begin appearing in a specific biome. Your goal is essentially to destroy each of them, whilst also surviving the onslaught of monsters that comes with it.
The best part about getting shards this way, is that bosses are regularly spawned at routine intervals when breaking generators. In just one swarm, you can easily make away with over 25 shards. It's tricky, but easily the best method right now for shard farming.

The best way to sum up the use of shards is to remember that any time you're purchasing, or upgrading from a vendor, Shards will most definitely be in use.
They can be used to upgrade vendor levels, apply enchantments to items, or even re-roll the selection of items you can purchase directly from a vendor at any given time. Just be aware that overall, Shards have a global cap of 100 on your character, meaning once you hit 100, you won't be able to earn any more unless you spend some.
