Build Overview

Do you hear that? That is the sound of Zeal spinning. Enemies weaken, packs evaporate, and you stay in the fight because this build rewards aggression. This is AoElena’s Zealspin Paladin. Welcome to one of the most satisfying builds of Season 12!

The Zealspin Paladin build comes online effortlessly in Torment IV without perfect gear - making it a great fit for someone interested in blasting through seasonal content with ease. You really just need Red Sermon for the damage to really come online. This build thrives in Nightmare Dungeons, Helltides, Infernal Hordes, and the Pit.

Clear packs effortlessly with Zealot's Legacy Zeal and the Paladin unique Red Sermon, passively building critical strike chance and damage every time you lose life. Build attack speed and critical chance with Fanaticism Aura. Sustain with Consecration, Defiance Aura, and Aegis. Your ultimate Fortress will keep you alive with its modifier that leaves you with at least 1 HP so you can avoid death in the stickiest situations...unless you want more damage, then bring Seraphs' Wings to proc vulnerable to all enemies and gain tons of movement speed!

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Low gear requirements
  • High adrenaline combat
  • Bosses go down quick
  • Satisfying gameplay
  • HP management (instead of resource)
  • May feel squishier at Pit 80+

Build Variants

Leveling should feel pretty easy - focus on acquiring gear with affixes such as Strength, Max Life and Armor. The fourth affix can be a resource generator (if you don't have Red Sermon yet) or critical hit chance. There aren't any mandatory aspects locked behind dungeons. If you need defensive aspects, look for Juggernaut's Aspect or Undying Aspect.

If you manage to get access to a Mythic early on, Heir of Perdition is a BIS helm because of the 60%[x] damage increase that can double or triple if other members in the party also wear it. If you're needing sustain against elemental damage, Tyrael's Might fixes that problem with MASSIVE damage reduction and resistances. Andariel's Visage is making a comeback as well with a whopping 40% damage reflected as a DoT...there IS a poison variation to this build, so check it out if you get this unique!

Tempering is pretty cheap in Season 12 and Scrolls of Restoration allow for resets, so it is wise to temper early on. Aim for Zealot Critical Strike Damage on offensive gear. The rest of the gear is up to you: do you want more resource generation, more movement speed, or more cooldowns/defensive buffs?

This build variant uses Fortress Cooldown Reduction tempers to build towards infinite uptime of Fortress (unless you decide to use Arbiter of Justice for more damage - then build Arbiter Duration - this option is only good if you don't need to be as defensive).

Oaths
  1. Use Advance as your basic early on to build resource if needed (i.e. if you don't have Red Sermon yet) otherwise, replace this slot with Fanaticism Aura to proc Weakness and boost your attack speed/critical strike chance
  2. Spam Zeal - this is your biggest source of damage
  3. Use Consecration to heal, deal 15% more damage, and use less resource
  4. Use Defiance Aura to escape CC (the active procs unstoppable)
  5. Use Aegis defensively to gain 100% block chance for 4 seconds and proc unstoppable
  6. Use Fortress as a "cheat death" mechanic - it makes you immune for 4.5 seconds and as long as you stand in it, then for the remainder of the ability, you won't die due to your life not going below 1 (Entrench Fortress) OR Arbiter of Justice (if you want more damage) and need to proc vulnerability and gain some movement speed.

  • Gear is constantly evolving and changing, so use this as a light outline as you work towards endgame set-up
  • None of these aspects are locked behind dungeons, so you're only going to have to farm Lord Zir for your Red Sermon
  • If you don't have Red Sermon, you can use a 2H sword with Aspect of the Zealot's Covenant for damage (this will free up an aspect slot on your ring, you can use Aspect of Utmost Glory as long as you're applying Weaken via Fanaticism Aura's active)
  • If your HP drains too much with Red Sermon, this can be solved by putting Life on Hit on your gear via enchanting
  • At level 10, tempers unlock. Be sure to constantly apply Zealot Critical Strike Damage and Fortress Cooldown Reduction as you work towards improving your gear
  • Focus on enchanting Strength, Maximum Life, Armor, and Critical Strike Damage on your weapon(s) until you get Red Sermon

Elixirs and Incenses

ElixirElixir of Precision
Core IncenseAncient Times
Defensive IncenseReddamine Buzz
Resistance IncenseSoothing Spices

Elixirs and incenses are fairly cheap to make, so make it a priority to always have these active with any type of challenging content. Look at your character's stats and see if you need more attack speed or critical strike chance to determine which offensive elixir would benefit you.

There are a couple of variations you can make:

IF you don't have Red Sermon, use Advance (Vanguard's Rush modifier) to maximize your Fervor stacks for more damage

If you want to be more defensive, change the Ultimate to Aspect of the Fortress with the Entrench modifier. This will allow you to stay alive no matter what for 4.5 seconds

Paragon Board

The paragon board here starts with the mentality of "how quickly can I grab all legendary nodes and sockets?" The rare (yellow) and magic (blue) nodes are important, but the power from legendary nodes are way more impactful early on. If you need more damage, look for blue/yellow nodes that are nearby to grab with beneficial stats (ex. x% total armor, x% maximum life).

If you see [x] anywhere on the paragon board (mostly found in glyphs), that type of number is multiplicative, thus will scale higher than additive.

Boards/Glyphs

1. Starter Board/Feverous Glyph - You should have 3-4 stacks of Fervor, thus granting you a minimum of 15-20%[x] increased damage indefinitely.

2. Fervent/Honed Glyph - This legendary node gives big critical strike damage/chance for each stack of Fervor. The glyph gives multiplicative crit strike damage.

3. Castle/Chip - If you aren't aware, Castle no longer grants 2,000%[x] damage from armor scaled - it now grants around 100%[x] damage based on Damage Reduction from Armor. Still useful, but not broken anymore. The Chip glyph offers a physical damage increase (multiplicative), which is perfect due to Zeal being strictly physical.

4. Preacher/Spirit - This board gives 15%[+] attack speed and damage that scales with attack speed! The glyph here grants more critical strike damage.

5. Relentless/Exploit - This board offers 80%[x] increased damage permanentnly as long as you're moving, along with some cooldown reduction. The Exploit glyph enables us to deal Vulnerable damage to targets (and increased damage), a proc that only comes from using Arbiter of Justice via Seraphs' Wings modifier. This will allow you to use Fortress if you need moments of invulnerability, which Arbiter sadly cannot grant.

Mercenary

Raheir passively grants 15% Resist All Elements - quite helpful!

How it Plays

You're going to be a VERY fast Paladin with this build.

How it Works

As a Zealot Paladin, you spin to win. Well, it LOOKS like you're spinning. Basically, you stack Zealot damage with Revelator's Aspect and Aspect of the Zealot's Covenant, hitting those Zeal strikes harder with Fervor stacks thanks to Aspect of Jacques' Fervor. Your Red Sermon will grant you Death or Glory for free, amplifying your damage even further at the cost of draining your HP.
