Build Overview

The Death Trap Rogue Build Guide teaches you about Gear, Skills, Paragon, Playstyle & Seasonal Mechanics in Diablo 4.

Death Trap is a versatile skill that pulls in enemies and deals great damage. It is one of the contenders for being the fastest build in the entire game. Zooming through all content the game and any challenge has to offer at unmatched speeds is exactly what this Death Trap Rogue build is all about. In Season 13, Death Trap gearing is different than in previous seasons, due the Talisman playing a major role in itemization.

This build can run Pit Tier 100 in 1minute and T12 Lair Bosses in < 5s when properly optimized.

Death Traps Variant Upgrades Sudden Death Death Trap and Explosive Trigger Death Trap is bugged and does not properly reset it's Cooldown with Preparation equipped. This does not affect the main variant of this guide however.

Loot Filter Explained

  • Use the widget to copy the filter and paste it in-game
  • This is a baseline Filter for DT that hides non-Ancestral items unless they are a codex upgrade.
    • It also hides non-Ancestral Uniques.
    • It does however show the relevant Uniques for this build.
  • The filter highlights important rolls (GA CDR and +All-Skills).
  • The filter is rather strict so that you can keep blasting.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Insane Mobility
  • Incredible AoE
  • Easy to Play
  • Insanely difficult to gear
  • Requires Uniques
  • All sorts of Breakpoints

Build Variants

Play this version before you have the gear required for the T100 Destroyer breakpoints.

Death Trap Rogue is incredibly reliant on specific gear and breakpoints.

The required breakpoints are:

  1. Equal or less than 15 seconds Death Trap Cooldown
    • That requires:
    • Greater Affix Cooldown Reduction on as many pieces as possible (e.g. Helmet, Gloves, Rings, and Amulet), and Greater Affix Cooldown Tempers on your Rings and Amulet.
  2. Equal or more than 225 Maximum Energy
  3. Aspect of Aftermath to be able to consistently restore at least 225 Energy
    • To do that, you need 40 Ranks of Death Trap with a min-rolled Aspect of Aftermath or 25 Ranks with a max-rolled one.
    • If you can not even reach 25 Ranks, consider putting Aspect of Aftermath on your Amulet.
  4. Trap Arm time Reduction tempered on your Gloves and Spring-Loaded Node on Deadly Ambush.

Attack Speed Breakpoints (Different for each variant!)

  1. The Attack Speed Breakpoint for the Shako Variant is at 51.5% Attack Speed (12 Frames) with 1 Dagger & 1 Sword.
    1. So with Ferocity (+20%), which gives +5% AS per stack and caps at 4 stacks and Primer Dash gives you all 4 stacks at 15 Ranks, you want +31.5% Attack Speed from Gear and Paragon.
    2. We get +5% Attack Speed from Nodes on No Witnesses, leaving 26.5% from Gear.
    3. To solve it, you need two regular attack speed rolls on your rings (2 x 12.5%) and an Attack Speed Temper on your weapon (+6% with GA)
    4. Or, a GA Attack Speed (15%) on one ring and a regular max-roll on the other (12.5%) [27.5% total].
  2. To avoid wasting Attack Speed, you can calculate the Breakpoints for your skills using THIS SHEET.

I highly recommend binding Dash to Shift so you can hold down Shift and your Death Trap button to automatically alternate between the two.

If you want more damage but are fine going a bit slower, swap Aspect of Apogeic Furor for Aspect of Entrapment.

Must Have Breakpoints:

    1. You can get +Maximum Resource on Helm, Chest, Amulet and Charms.
    2. Sea Lord's Fine Gloves allows you to have 25-30% more Energy.

El'druin, Sword of Justice is not mandatory to playing the build. However, you are much faster with it.

Transfigurations to chase:

  • Attack Speed (Might get you another breakpoint or allow to roll it off your rings)
  • Cooldown reduction (Enough might allow you to drop El'druin, Sword of Justice)
  • Gem Strength on weapons (just raw damage increase)
  • Kullean Transfiguration on Amulet:
    • Aspect of Mending Obscurity (defense), Earthstriker's Aspect, Exploiter's Aspect.

If you do not know where to find the Uniques for this build, take a look at our Boss Table Cheat Sheet.

Talismans

Talisman Priority
+7

Sea Lord's Fine Gloves is stacked by Dash and Shadow Step and allows you to reach 225 Energy more easily. You can swap it to Rustbitten Dirk against Bosses.

Getting Ultimate Cooldown Reduction on your Seal means you can run Heir of Perdition instead of Harlequin Crest.

If you have the Mythic Unique seal which reduces set-requirements, you can run Berú of Applied Alchemy instead of Sea Lord's Fine Gloves, given you still hit 225 Energy.

Paragon Board

Mercenary

You want to use Subo with the Opening Fire node that increases your Critical Strike Damage against affected targets. Furthermore, you can see enemies and materials on the minimap with him hired.

For your reinforcement you want to use Raheir and his Bastion ability. This allows you to survive an otherwise fatal blow and we chose to activate it automatically upon being injured.

How it Plays

  • You cast Dash and Shadow Step for Mobility.
    • Thanks to Artifice Shadow Step, it can be cast without a target.
  • Concealment is used as an infinite source of Unstoppable.
    • If you are expecting to get Crowd Controlled a lot you can spam it.
  • Spam Death Trap for damage.
    • Using Death Trap resets your Concealment Cooldown thanks to Berú of the Sightless.
  • Press Dark Shroud whenever it is off Cooldown to always maintain 5 stacks of it.
  • Use Cold Imbuement to gain Barrier with the Buffered Battery Cold Imbuement whenever you hit enemies with Dash or Shadow Step.

How it Works

Cooldown & Energy

This build revolves around one goal: 100% uptime on Death Trap, so you can infinitely cast it. To make this work, there are four non-negotiable breakpoints you need to hit:

  • The Cooldown: You must reduce your Death Trap cooldown to 15 seconds or less through gear and tempering.
  • The Energy Bank: You need a maximum energy level of at least 225.
  • The Restoration: You need to be able to restore 225 energy back immediately.
  • The Reduction: You need Trap Arm Time Reduction

Why 225 Energy? Because we use the Preparation Specialization alongside Beastfall Boots to fully reset that cooldown the moment we spend our energy.

Cooldown Reduction:

Greater Affix Cooldown Reduction on as many pieces as possible (e.g. Helmet, Gloves, Rings, and Amulet), and Greater Affix Cooldown Tempers on your Rings and Amulet. There is also Trap Cooldown Reduction on the Deadly Ambush Paragon Board.

Equal or more than 225 Maximum Energy:

You get this through +Maximum Resource on your Chest, +Maximum Resource on your Charms and the Unique Charm Sea Lord's Fine Gloves, providing you 30% more Energy once fully stacked.

Restoring 225 Energy:

To restore 225 Energy we utilize the Aspect of Aftermath on one of our Rings. To do that, you need 40 Ranks of Death Trap with a min-rolled or 25 Ranks with a max-rolled one. We get an additional 25 Energy restored by Beastfall Boots. Now how do we get that many Ranks of Death Trap? Simple, via Vehement Brawler's Aspect, Charms and our Amulet. Charms can get up to 4 ranks to Trap Skills each and our Amulet can roll Ranks to Trap or Ranks to All Skills. Get as many ranks as necessary to fulfill the requirement.

Trap Arm Time Reduction:

You need to temper it on your Gloves from the offensive category and get it in the Paragon on Deadly Ambush. This is necessary because there can only be a finite amount of Death Traps laid out before they are overwritten, unless they spring before that happens. Meaning, with maximum Trap Arm Time Reduction, they spring in 0.15 seconds.

Leveling

You can not level with this build. I would recommend you level with the Dance of Knives Leveling guide.

Runes

  • CirVex is best in Slot due to granting Skill Ranks.
  • ZANGar is mandatory to get closer to 100% Critical Hit Chance.

Alternative Runewords:

  • ZanJah can be used to go even faster.
  • PocMot is a choice if you are lazy do not want to press Dark Shroud manually.

Masterworking and Greater Affix Priority

Attack Speed Breakpoints

The optimal Attack Speed Breakpoints are different for each variant. Check the respective description in the variant you are using.

To avoid wasting Attack Speed, you can calculate the Attack Speed Breakpoints for your skills using THIS SHEET.

You might be wondering how frames translate into actual Cast Speed. Because the server runs at 60 frames per second the way we translate frames into Cast Speed is with the formula: 60 / Frames = Casts per Second.

Affix Choices

With Season 13 reworking the damage affixes on gear, for this build we have a simple priority:
Critical Strike Damage Multiplier > Vulnerable Damage Multiplier > Shadow / All Damage Multiplier. Note that Shadow and All Damage fall into the exact same damage category, so you always want to pick the higher of the two. These make a real difference in your build and can be very important to great damage output.

Frequently Asked Questions

I can not spam Death Trap infinitely, what am I doing wrong?

Make sure to:

  • Have your Death Trap below 15 seconds Cooldown.
  • This requires a lot of Cooldown Reduction, Death Trap Skill Ranks and good Tempering rolls and Masterworks.
  • Have means to restore 225 Energy.
  • Actually have 225 Energy in the first place
  • Have Preparation as Specialization equipped.
  • Have Trap Arm Time Reduction on your Gloves and in the Paragaon Board Deadly Ambush.

Where can I get Rustbitten Dirk?

Rustbitten Dirk is a random drop from Lair Bosses, so no target farm. You can upgrade white Daggers in the Horadric Cube to Unique. If you do not have white Daggers, use the remove affix recipe on blue or yellow ones until they are white.
